Next coronavirus stimulus bill could give up to $6,000 to households

  • The $2.2 trillion coronavirus relief legislation Congress passed at the end of March, which provided money for direct stimulus payments to most Americans, was the biggest emergency relief measure passed in US history.
  • On Tuesday, the Democrats in the House proposed an even bigger one, this time adding money for an additional round of coronavirus stimulus payments — up to $6,000 for households.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Millions of Americans are still waiting to receive their first coronavirus stimulus payment, supported by funding from a $2.2 trillion coronavirus relief bill Congress passed at the end of March, but Congress is already moving on and prepping another massive stimulus package. Chockablock full of aid like almost $1 trillion for state and local governments, the highlight of this new bill — proposed by House Democrats Tuesday ahead of a planned vote on Friday — will be a new round of direct cash payments to Americans, including $1,200 to individuals and as much as $6,000 for households.

Other major components of this new emergency relief include $175 billion that would help Americans with rent, mortgage, and utility payments; $75 billion to support coronavirus testing and contract-tracing, to help put the economy on more solid footing as more states “reopen”; and around $200 billion designated as “hazard pay” for essential workers during the coronavirus pandemic.

This ultra-hot exoplanet has yellow skies and iron rain

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Exoplanet WASP-79b is a massive gas giant with incredibly hot atmospheric temperatures.
  • Its atmosphere isn’t capable of scattering like in the way that Earth’s atmosphere does, so the daytime skies would look yellow instead of blue.
  • Like other hot Jupiter exoplanets, it’s thought that WASP-19b has iron rain due to its heat.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Exoplanets come in many different varieties. Some are frigid and icy, while others are rocky and warm, and some, like WASP-79b, are just plain weird. WASP-79b orbits a star that sits roughly 780 light-years from Earth. In space, that’s a relatively short distance, and our proximity to the planet and its host star has allowed scientists to get a pretty good idea of what the world has to offer.

There are a number of things that make WASP-79b special. For starters, it’s absolutely massive and ranks high on the list of the largest exoplanets we know about. It’s also insanely hot, orbiting so close to its star that its atmosphere is a steamy 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Oh, and did I mention the iron rain?

We might be waiting a very long time for ‘Deadpool 3’

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • New Deadpool 3 chatter indicates that Marvel may not have plans to make the movie anytime soon.
  • The other interpretation of Rob Liefeld’s comments can be that Marvel won’t include the creator of the superhero in any MCU plans going forward.
  • There’s plenty of evidence to suggest that Disney wants to use Deadpool in future projects, even though Marvel hasn’t announced anything for the time being.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Deadpool 3 is easily one of the most anticipated unannounced movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Disney’s acquisition of Fox. The X-Men and the Fantastic Four are two other exciting Marvel properties that Disney took over, but we already know that Marvel will reboot those projects.

Deadpool, meanwhile, will remain largely the same as he was in the two Fox movies. That’s something Disney’s Bob Iger said from the get-go, and we’ve seen increasing evidence that a Deadpool 3 is in the making. Most recently, we heard that Deadpool might appear in several cameos once he’s properly introduced, although a release date for the movie hasn’t been revealed. But recent comments from Rob Liefeld suggests Marvel might not have any plans for a new Deadpool movie. Or maybe those plans just don’t include the character’s creator.

  • Jerry Stiller passed away this week at the age of 92.
  • A longtime actor and comedian, Stiller was best known for his portrayal of Frank Costanza on NBC’s Seinfeld.

The world lost a comedy icon this week with the passing of Jerry Stiller. Primarily known for his portrayals of Frank Costanza on Seinfeld and Arthur Spooner on The King of Queens, Stiller also made frequent cameo appearances on a number of other TV shows and movies, such as Zoolander and Heavyweights.

Stiller had an extensive comedy career that went all the way back to the 1950s when he performed improv with The Compass Players, an ensemble whose members ultimately went on to form the famed Second City in Chicago. During the 1960s and 70s, Stiller and his wife, Anne Meara, joined forces and formed a successful comedy duo known as Stiller and Meara. That said, there’s no denying that it was Stiller’s portrayal of George Costanza’s dad on Seinfeld that made him something of a household name across the globe.

Here’s the surface of an asteroid like you’ve never seen it before

  • Japan’s Hayabusa-2 asteroid probe snapped some gorgeous images of the surface of Ryugu.
  • The photos show the color contrast of Ryugu’s surface, with the redder areas getting their color to an intense run-in with the Sun at some point in the asteroid’s past.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The Japanese space agency JAXA sent its Hayabusa-2 asteroid probe to the big, diamond-shaped near-earth asteroid known as Ryugu way back in 2014. The trip took four years, but it was well worth the wait. The spacecraft snatched samples of asteroid material from Ryugu and is now bringing them home for study.

The sample-gathering aspect of the mission was certainly a highlight, but the spacecraft also snapped some absolutely incredible photos of Ryugu’s surface while it was in orbit and during its touchdown attempts. Now, with scientists examining the photos in the hopes of unraveling the asteroid’s secrets, we’re getting to see some of them for the first time.

Why I don’t want my favorite Android feature to come to iPhone

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • One huge advantage that Android has over iPhone is fast battery charging technology, with some companies working on charging speeds of around 100W.
  • However, fast charging speeds have an unwanted side effect on the battery, as its health can deteriorate much faster due to fast wireless charging.
  • That’s why the iPhone’s 18W charging speed might be a necessary compromise between good battery life and great battery health.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The iPhone revolutionized the smartphone business 13 years ago and forced everyone to quickly adapt to a new way of making smartphones. Google was the fastest, killing its BlackBerry-like Android OS project and retooling the mobile operating system to work on touchscreen devices. Since then, we’ve witnessed an incredible number of breakthrough innovations in the mobile landscape, with iPhone and Android making every other platform obsolete. Inevitably, Android makers and Google copied Apple, and Apple appropriated features from Android for iOS. Fans of either side would tell you the OS they’re loyal to is the best, and that the iPhone or Android hardware they’re using is superior to the competition. The truth is somewhere in the middle. But, ultimately, the relentless competition between these two sides is what drives innovation, and consumers win in the end.

Not all features are easy to migrate between platforms, though. Take Apple’s iMessage, a must-have instant messaging app that has no true rival on Android. And it’s not just software. Android has a feature that I’ve envied for years: Fast charging technology that eclipses the iPhone’s 18W wired charging speeds, as it can go all the way up to 120W. But a new revelation has made me reconsider that stance.

How to transfer your library from Google Play Music to YouTube Music

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Google Play Music is finally shutting down before the end of the year, leaving YouTube Music as Google’s only streaming music platform.
  • On Tuesday, Google began sending out invitations for Google Play Music users to transfer their music libraries over to YouTube Music ahead of Play Music’s closure.
  • The transfer process can be completed on mobile devices or from a web browser.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

When considering how many messaging apps Google has introduced, shuttered, and rebranded over the past few years, it’s somewhat surprising that its two music platforms are being consolidated into a single service at the end of the year. Google Play Music is going to be absorbed by YouTube Music, and on Tuesday, Google announced one of the last steps in the process that allow subscribers to seamlessly move over to YouTube.

Google is now inviting Google Play Music users to transfer their music libraries, preferences, and playlists to YouTube Music. Both services will remain online for the foreseeable future, but those of you who are still on the legacy platform now have all the tools you need to make the switch when you’re ready to do so.

Here’s why coronavirus infections are so much worse for men

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • It was already generally understood that men are faring worse than women in the coronavirus pandemic, with the former being hit harder by the virus in terms of the severity of their illness and the frequency of death.
  • A new study published this week reveals that may be because of higher concentrations of a particular enzyme in the blood of men which helps the virus attack healthy cells.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Health care experts figured out pretty early in the coronavirus pandemic in the US that while no one is really safe from the virus, it’s hitting some people harder than others.

One example is men vs. women, with the former tending to suffer a more severe illness associated with the virus (and to more frequently even die) compared to women. By the time the US had done about 1.5 million tests in the country, reports showed that 56% of those tested at that point were women (only 16% of whom tested positive for the virus). However, 44% or so of those tested were men, and 23% of them tested positive. “This is to all of our men out there, no matter what age group,” Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus response coordinator, said during a recent press briefing. “If you have symptoms, you should be tested, and make sure that you are tested.”

Hope for life on Mars dealt a huge blow by new study

  • Scientists built a climate model to simulate puddles of salty water on Mars which could hold life.
  • The data doesn’t favor the existence of life as we know it, and the puddles are believed to only exist during certain times of the year.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Of all the planets in our solar system, Mars is thought to be our best chance at finding life outside of Earth. There’s obviously not much happening on the surface, but pockets of ice and even water exist in some areas of the planet, and there’s a tiny, almost impossibly slim chance that something very tiny might be living there.

Or, at least that’s what some scientists were hoping for, but a new study published by researchers from several institutions suggests that even that narrow possibility is probably also nonexistent.
