Stimulus check: Try this if you’ve had problems with direct deposit
- If you’re still waiting on your coronavirus stimulus check from the IRS, and you’re hoping to get it faster via an electronic direct deposit, time is running out.
- A deadline is coming on Wednesday, May 13th that taxpayers need to be aware of.
- The IRS says that it wants to have your banking information by noon on May 13 in order to send out your stimulus check as a direct deposit.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
A key deadline associated with the IRS’s disbursement of coronavirus stimulus payments directly to most Americans is coming up fast.
Thanks to money appropriated by Congress as part of a massive coronavirus relief package, millions of Americans are going to get (and have already started to receive) payments of up to $1,200 for individuals and $2,400 for married couples, with an extra $500 per eligible child. The money will come in either a paper format, as a physical check, or, if you prefer, you can opt for an electronic payment that comes in the form of a direct deposit — which means you’ll get the check faster. However, you now have less than 24 hours to make sure your details are squared away for the direct deposit.

Dr. Fauci: ‘Virtually no chance’ coronavirus will be eradicated
- Speaking with NBC Sports over the weekend, Dr. Anthony Fauci discussed the hurdles that the NFL will face when it attempts to play a regular season in 2020.
- Fauci also said that there is ‘virtually no chance’ the virus is eradicated in the near future.
- When the virus returns in the fall, Fauci says we have to have the mechanism to keep it from blowing up again and putting us back where we were in March.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
In a hearing with the Senate Health Committee, Dr. Anthony Fauci warned that the US could be risking an outbreak if it isn’t careful about reopening states. Local and state governments, and all the people living in their cities and states, are desperate to get back to some semblance of normalcy as quickly as possible, but if they go about reopening the wrong way, it could extend the length of this pandemic and put millions of people at risk.
Virtually every state in the US is now entering into some phase of reopening, though, including New York, where the virus has hospitalized tens of thousands of people in the past two months. As such, the discussion has unsurprisingly shifted to sports, and over the weekend, Peter King of NBC Sports had a chance to speak with Fauci about the NFL, and whether or not he believes the season will be able to take place as planned.

This futuristic anti-pandemic suit looks like it belongs in ‘Blade Runner’
- Designers invented a futuristic solution to socializing during a pandemic.
- It’s called the Micrashell, and it’s packed with personal protective features as well as a bunch of silly sci-fi accessories that ensure it’ll never actually be made.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Right now, the world as a whole is struggling with a new reality. The novel coronavirus pandemic has dramatically changed the way most of us live our daily lives. We’re avoiding close contact with our fellow humans, sitting home instead of going out, and doing what we can to keep ourselves and our families safe.
A design group called Production Club decided to take our current situation and run with it, conceptually speaking. The result is a full-body anti-pandemic suit that not only protects the wearer from airborne harm, but it actually promotes socializing. It also looks like something pulled straight out of Blade Runner or some other 80s sci-fi flick.

iPhone 12 launch will help Apple weather the coronavirus storm
- The iPhone 12 release should help Apple weather the economic downturn caused by the coronavirus, according to one analyst.
- Though Tim Cook recently said that Apple’s supply chain in Asia is back up and running, the coronavirus might see Apple push back the iPhone 12 release to October.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Amidst the coronavirus pandemic, Apple a few weeks ago posted surprisingly strong earnings for the March quarter. When the dust settled, Apple posted $58.3 billion in revenue and earnings of $2.55 per share. Investors were encouraged by the results and shares of Apple have been rising steadily ever since.
Looking ahead, Apple’s financial future in the near-term remains a bit uncertain. This was underscored by Apple’s reluctance to provide investors with guidance for the current June quarter. To be fair, Apple’s decision makes sense as there are simply too many unknown variables for the company to account for. For instance, there’s no telling if a new wave of coronavirus cases will sweep the country, prompting Apple to keep its stores closed for even longer. And even if all of Apple’s retail stores open up sooner rather than later, the economic impact of the coronavirus may see a huge drop-off in demand for Apple products.

AI might soon be able to diagnose coronavirus based on symptoms
- Researchers from the UK and US developed artificial intelligence that can diagnose COVID-19 by associating a set of parameters and self-reported symptoms with the help of a mobile app.
- The researchers found four symptoms indicative of a likely infection with the novel coronavirus, including loss of smell or taste, severe or persistent cough, fatigue, and skipping meals.
- Such a tool could supplement the lack of COVID-19 testing in certain communities looking to ease restrictions, but the method might have limitations.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Aggressive testing and contact tracing have helped many countries contain their novel coronavirus outbreaks over the past few months, proving that the virus can be fought. Countries that failed to speed up testing and tracing ended up with massive caseloads and an increasing number of victims.
The virus isn’t going to disappear until some degree of herd immunity is acquired. That happens either by surviving COVID-19 or getting vaccinated. Additional waves are expected in the near future, which is why opening up the economy isn’t an easy task for any government. Several measures will have to be implemented to ensure the fast discovery of new cases so that potential outbreaks can be stopped early on. That’s where artificial intelligence (AI) might help, as a new study says computer models can interpret self-reported symptoms and predict the likelihood of a person having COVID-19.

Xbox Series X vs. PS5: We might finally know which console will cost less
- The prices of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X have yet to be unveiled, but a gaming analyst and a former Microsoft executive believe Microsoft will undercut Sony.
- The $399 PS4 took an early lead over the $499 Xbox One due to the $100 price difference, and it seems unlikely that Microsoft will make the same mistake twice.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
One of the many ways that Sony built an insurmountable lead over Microsoft in the current console generation was by undercutting the price of the Xbox One at launch. On June 10th, 2013, Microsoft held its E3 press conferences earlier in the day, and Sony held its conference in the evening. Microsoft confirmed that the price of the Xbox One would be $499, and hours later, Sony revealed that the PS4 would cost $399 on launch day.
Both consoles were still months from launch, and yet it already seemed like the war was over. Whether or not it was part of the original plan, Sony took advantage of Microsoft’s error, and the PS4 has had a healthy lead over the Xbox One ever since. But now that this console generation is coming to a close, and the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are on the way, there are those who believe Microsoft will turn the tables on Sony this time around.

A huge chunk of China’s new rocket just crashed back down to Earth
- China launched its Long March-5B rocket, the most powerful in the country’s history, on a test flight last week.
- The core stage of the rocket tumbled back down to Earth on an uncontrolled descent, eventually splashing down off the coast of West Africa.
- The debris weight close to 18 metric tons, and passed over cities like New York and Los Angeles before eventually landing in the ocean.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
China is absolutely determined to not only catch up to the west when it comes to space exploration, but the country also seems intent on doing so in a short a time as possible. To that end, the country launched its most powerful rocket yet, the Long March-5B, last week. The test flight went well, according to Chinese officials, and the rocket soared skyward as intended. Its return to Earth, however, was a bit of a nail-biter.
The core stage of the rocket fell uncontrolled back to Earth, and it’s not exactly small. Weighing nearly 18 metric tons, the debris passed over some huge population centers — including Los Angeles and New York City — before eventually coming down in the Atlantic Ocean.

PS5 release date might have just been leaked by Sony
- A job listing from Sony Interactive Entertainment states that the PS5 will launch in October 2020.
- Sony has yet to announce a release window more specific than “holiday 2020,” and has denied that the listing is accurate, claiming that the recruitment site made a mistake.
- Both the PS3 and PS4 launched in mid-November in 2006 and 2013, respectively.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
After a few weeks of radio silence, both Microsoft and Sony have begun to share more information about the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. Last week, Microsoft hosted a next-gen gameplay showcase that offered us a glimpse at multiple third-party titles that will launch on Xbox Series X in the months to come, and on Tuesday, Sony unveiled the logo and opening video for the new PlayStation Studios brand that will unite its first-party teams.
More details will be shared in the coming weeks, as Microsoft has already announced that it will hold events once a month leading up to the launch of the Xbox Series X this holiday season, but Sony has yet to share its plans. All that we have to go on are leaks and rumors, and while chances are that Sony has yet to nail down a precise release date for the PS5, a recently uncovered job listing claims the console will be out in October 2020.

Breakthrough coronavirus drug could give people temporary immunity
- More pharmaceutical companies are developing a new type of therapy for the novel coronavirus that uses an old treatment technique for infectious diseases.
- Scientists are developing antibodies that could improve the recovery of COVID-19 patients and provide limited protection against infection.
- The concept behind this type of treatment is based on antibody-rich plasma transfusion from survivors that has been effective in some severe COVID-19 cases.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The past few months have brought us plenty of sorrow as the novel coronavirus reached all corners of the world. The number of new cases increased at an alarming rate from day to day, and COVID-19 has claimed more and more victims. But we’ve also witnessed an incredible response from the medical community, not just when it comes to treating patients. Companies are trying new therapies and conducting trials to determine whether existing drugs can be repurposed to reduce the risk of COVID-19 complications and death. On top of that, other researchers have been working on vaccines, and the first such drugs might be ready for mass deployment as early as 2021 in some regions if all goes well. Otherwise, the first vaccines might not arrive until late 2021, and even then they won’t be able to meet global demand. However, more and more teams are working on a new type of drug that has the potential to cure COVID-19 patients, and even offering some sort of limited immunity that could prevent infections.

There’s a secret way to save $25 on the Fire TV Stick 4K
- It has been quite some time since Amazon’s popular Fire TV devices have gone on sale at a discount, but there’s one hidden sale that some of our readers are really going to love.
- It’s a special sale on the Fire TV Stick 4K that slashes the device down to its all-time lowest price, but there’s a catch.
- The coupon code 4KFIRETV drops the price of Amazon’s 4K streaming dongle to just $24.99, but sadly, the deal isn’t available to everyone.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
There have been plenty of great deals on Amazon’s various own-brand devices over the past month or two, which might be a bit surprising since the company shifted its resources away from “nonessential” products. Amazon’s goal was to free up warehouse space and shipping capacity for medical products so that it could ship them to hospitals more quickly. We’re not sure if Amazon did a good job of that or not, but what we do know is that there are plenty of solid deals right now and even protective gear that is shipping to everyone.
The best-selling products we’ve been covering lately are Jointown 3-ply face masks and Anntuk 4-ply face masks, both of which are in stock right now and ready to ship. Amazon’s best-selling hand sanitizer is back in stock as well. We haven’t seen very many shipping delays on Amazon’s various device lines either though. In fact, the company has continued to offer new deals all the time, focusing mainly on a different Amazon device category each week. This week, Echo smart speakers and Echo Show displays are the focus and you’ll find plenty of solid discounts such as an Echo Dot for $29.99 or $50 off the Echo Show 8. But there’s one special deal you won’t find anywhere on that page or anywhere else, and it might just be the hottest deal on Amazon’s entire site right now.
If you’re one of the lucky people eligible to get in on the action based on Amazon’s unknown criteria, you can slash the price of the $50 Fire TV Stick 4K down to just $24.99. That is not a typo. It’s the lowest price ever for a 4K Fire TV Stick, matching Amazon’s deal from Prime Day 2019. As we mentioned, the only problem is that not everyone is eligible for this deal. Go to the Fire TV Stick 4K page on Amazon’s website and if you get lucky, you might see a note under the $49.99 price that looks like this:
Now, it’s important to note that you need to give this deal a shot even if you don’t see that note because the special coupon might still work. Drop a Fire TV Stick 4K into your cart and use the promo code 4KFIRETV at checkout. If you’re eligible for the deal, the price will drop to $24.99. If you’re not eligible for the deal, you’ll see a message that the coupon code is not valid — but don’t get too upset because we’ve got another Fire TV Stick 4K deal for you down below.
Fire TV Stick 4K streaming device with Alexa built in, Dolby Vision, includes Alexa Voice Remot…: $24.99 (use code 4KFIRETV)
First, you can read about the aforementioned offer on Amazon’s terms and conditions page right here:
This is a limited time offer. Qualifying customers only. Amazon reserves the right to modify or cancel the offer at any time. Offer good while supplies last. Offer only applies to Fire TV Stick 4K with Alexa Voice Remote, streaming media player sold by Amazon Digital Services LLC. Shipping charges and taxes may apply to discounted items. Offer limited to one per customer and account. Offer is non-transferable, may not be resold, and may not be combined with other offers. To redeem this offer, please enter the promo code during checkout. Promotional code valid until 11:59 p.m. (PT) December 31, 2020. If any of the products related to this offer are returned, your refund will equal the amount you paid for the product, subject to applicable refund policies.
Fire TV Stick 4K streaming device with Alexa built in, Dolby Vision, includes Alexa Voice Remot…: $24.99 (use code 4KFIRETV)
Now, if the coupon mentioned above doesn’t work for you, there’s actually another good deal that anyone can take advantage of. Just buy two Fire TV Stick 4K players and you’ll receive a $20 Amazon credit when you receive and activate them. That essentially cuts the Fire TV Stick 4K to the same price as the entry-level Fire TV Stick, which isn’t too shabby at all. Here are the terms and conditions for this separate Fire TV deal that’s available to anyone.
