Largest coronavirus study to date reveals mortality risk factors
- Scientists still don’t have all of their questions answered yet about the coronavirus, including why so many people are dying from it when it seems to barely affect other infected people at all.
- A new study from the UK, based on data from millions of patients, purports to be the largest such study yet of the virus and presents an authoritative look at the risk factors of dying from COVID-19.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
There’s still a lot we don’t know about the coronavirus at the heart of the pandemic that’s still sweeping across the globe, including why it leaves some infected people asymptomatic while ravaging the bodies of (and eventually killing) other people. Scientists, however, are racing to learn as much as they can about the deadly virus so that viable treatment options in the form of therapeutics and eventually a vaccine can be identified sooner rather than later.
A new study in the UK purports to be the largest such analysis to date and incorporates data from 17.4 million UK adults to give what might be our best look yet at the risk factors associated with dying from the coronavirus.

Leakers have revealed when Sony will finally unveil the PS5
- Sony is reportedly planning to unveil the PS5 at some point in early June, according to several sources.
- There may be a PlayStation 5 event soon, but things are in flux because the novel coronavirus health crisis is far from being resolved.
- A well-connected reporter said that PS5 news is coming in early-to-mid June if everything goes well, while a different leaker keeps saying that June 2nd is the date gamers have been waiting for.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The ongoing coronavirus health crisis changed has changed everything in our lives in the past few months, so we’ll never know whether Sony had planned to show the PS5 design at the rumored February 2020 event. The COVID-19 outbreak prevented Sony from attending trade shows as well, including gaming events. In fact, Sony was one of the first tech companies to pull out of big shows like MWC, so we never expected the company to announce any press conferences of its own. In the months that followed, Sony chose to speak very little about the PS5. We saw the PS5 specs get confirmed during an incredibly dull online event that may have come in response to Microsoft’s aggressive Xbox Series X reveal plans. And then Sony took the wraps off the brand new DualSense controllers, with some rumors saying it only unveiled the new device to get out ahead of leaks.
The PS5 details that fans want most are still a mystery, but they may be unveiled soon. There’s increasing chatter that Sony will host a virtual PlayStation 5 even in early June, assuming COVID-19 doesn’t complicate things even further.

- Facebook officially launched its redesigned desktop website on Friday, May 8th.
- The new Facebook design looks much more like the mobile app, loads faster than before, removes much of the clutter of the old design, and introduces dark mode.
- You can opt in to the new Facebook design at any time in your browser.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Last year at its annual F8 developer conference (remember conferences?), Facebook revealed a new design for its desktop website. Over the past few months, Facebook has been letting some users opt into the new design in certain regions, but on Friday, the redesigned website launched globally, giving everyone with a Facebook account the ability to check out the new look and the additional features of the updated desktop experience.
If you want to see what the new Facebook looks like, all you have to do is head to Facebook.com on a browser, click on the down arrow at the right side menu bar at the top of the page, and look for the menu option that reads “Switch to New Facebook.” You can swap back at any time from the same menu.

Antibodies from this animal can kill the coronavirus
- Antibodies obtained from llamas may be adapted for human use in COVID-19 cases on humans.
- Researchers say the antibodies can neutralize the novel coronavirus’s ability to bind to cells, a critical process that allows the virus to enter the cells and replicate.
- The antibodies might be used to manufacture drugs that would work just like plasma transfusions from COVID-19 survivors.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Llamas, the beautiful beasts that even Disney used for one of its animated features, might hold one of the answers to cracking the novel coronavirus pandemic. They can generate a strong antibody that can kill the new virus and scientists think they can adapt it for a treatment that would provide the same kind of results as a plasma transfusion from COVID-19 survivors.
Just in the past few days, we talked about eight separate projects to create monoclonal antibody drugs. Five teams are working on such therapies in the US and one of the drugs might be ready this summer. We also told you about similar efforts in Israel, Japan, and the Netherlands, where doctors have also been studying the same concept. Since then, a new study came out from researchers from the University of Texas, the National Institutes of Health, and Ghent University in Belgium that says llama antibodies can neutralize the spike protein on the SARS-CoV-2 virus that attaches to human cells and allows the coronavirus to replicate inside the body.

ESA wants to make Moon bases out of astronaut pee
- The European Space Agency says urine could play a major role in the construction of lunar bases.
- The urea in urine makes it an ideal ingredient to combine with lunar soil, creating a sort of ‘lunar concrete’ that hardens into rigid shapes.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Not long ago, researchers published a study revealing that a combination of pee and lunar soil may provide suitable building material for space travelers. The study suggested that the urea in astronaut urine could play a crucial role in mixing a concrete-like material for construction purposes. Now, the European Space Agency is doubling down on the idea, noting that astronaut pee will likely play a big role in space exploration.
With NASA, China, and the ESA all eyeing Moon missions in the coming years, the idea of setting up semi-permanent lunar bases is getting some serious attention. Many possible options have been proposed, including using hollow lunar lava tubes as makeshift homes.

Apple Stores in four states will reopen next week
- The coronavirus forced Apple to close all of its retail stores in the U.S. on March 15.
- With the coronavirus subsiding in some areas, Apple today announced it will start reopening some store locations next week.
- Apple is currently planning to open retail stores in Idaho, South Carolina, Alabama, and Alaska. Apple is evaluating store reopenings on a case-by-case basis, and it’s likely many store locations in densely populated areas will remain closed for quite some time.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
As alluded to in the company’s earnings conference call a few days back, Apple will start reopening some of its retail stores in the United States next week. Recall that Apple closed all of its retail store locations outside of China on March 15 on account of the coronavirus pandemic. Early on, Apple was aiming to reopen its stores after just two weeks, but the severity of the coronavirus effectively forced the company to keep retail stores closed for weeks on end.
“We’re excited to begin reopening stores in the US next week, starting with some stores in Idaho, South Carolina, Alabama and Alaska,” an Apple spokesperson told CNBC earlier today. “Our team is constantly monitoring local health data and government guidance, and as soon as we can safely open our stores, we will.”
