US study says hydroxychloroquine doesn’t help coronavirus patients
- A new study funded by the National Institutes of Health found that the controversial hydroxychloroquine drug didn’t help coronavirus patients.
- The study included nearly 1,400 patients and concluded the anti-malaria drug wasn’t effective against the virus.
- This was an observational study, meaning the researchers did not control the actual therapy of patients, and they didn’t compare hydroxychloroquine to a placebo.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Touted as one of the most promising drugs in the fight against COVID-19, hydroxychloroquine is receiving increased resistance based on data that indicates the anti-malaria drug isn’t helpful against the novel coronavirus. Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine received plenty of coverage in March for a variety of reasons. Anecdotal evidence showed that some COVID-19 patients recovered after being given the drug. But one person died ingesting a substance that sounded like the drug, and others poisoned themselves with similar-sounding products.
Studies that followed indicated the drug can have severe adverse effects on the heart that can be fatal, prompting researchers in Brazil and France to stop their studies. Results from the biggest hydroxychloroquine study yet come from US-funded research, and they indicate the medicine isn’t helpful in COVID-19 therapy.

Apple reportedly delaying new AirPods to 2021 due to coronavirus
- Rumors surrounding new AirPods from Apple have been floating around for months, but a new report claims they will be delayed to 2021 due to the coronavirus.
- Meanwhile, a leaker says that Apple has new AirPods “ready to ship” at any time.
- Apple will produce AirPods in Vietnam for the first time this quarter.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The novel coronavirus pandemic has forced companies all around the world to adjust their plans, but Apple seems to have weathered the storm relatively well. Despite the rumored March event never coming to pass, Apple still launched a cheaper MacBook Air and a new iPad Pro with a LiDAR Scanner in March. A month later, the 2020 iPhone SE made its debut, and just this week, a highly-anticipated MacBook Pro upgrade was unveiled.
By all accounts, Apple has managed to stay on schedule for 2020 so far, but according to a new report from Nikkei Asian Review, that may not be the case for the rest of the year. The same sources that told Nikkei that Apple slashed its orders for AirPods by more than 10% earlier this year now say “the plan to introduce an update of the AirPods later this year is also currently affected and delayed by the disruptions of COVID-19.”

Samsung proves once again that it will copy literally anything Apple does
- Samsung this week announced its plan to introduce a new debit card.
- The company’s new and “innovative” debit card will launch this summer but Samsung didn’t provide us with additional details.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
By now, we’re pretty accustomed to seeing Samsung draw inspiration from Apple’s product line and outright steal some of the company’s more well-known iPhone features. In fact, Samsung’s penchant for looking to Apple for guidance runs so deep that they’ve even copied the icon Apple uses for Face ID. This, of course, shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone who closely followed Apple and Samsung’s blockbuster patent battle a few years ago. If you recall, the lawsuit saw the release of an internal 132-page Samsung document which laid out in specific detail how to blatantly copy some of the iPhone’s more innovative software features.
Flash forward to 2020 and Samsung’s still up to its old tricks. Late this week, Samsung announced a new plan to roll out an “innovative” debit card. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but this all sounds vaguely familiar to something Apple unveiled in March of last year.

Singapore deployed a robot to stop people from spreading coronavirus
- A Spot robot built by Boston Dynamics is exploring a Singapore park to remind people of social distancing guidelines.
- The robot plays a recorded message that runs down the rules for interacting in public, including maintaining safe distances.
- Singapore is also using another Spot robot as a medicine delivery system for coronavirus patients.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
If there’s one rule we should all be following to help prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus it’s social distancing. Staying away from people is the easiest way to prevent yourself or others from getting sick. It works, and we’ve seen the proof in the numbers of new cases in areas where people are actually sticking to the important guidelines.
The government of Singapore knows this, too, and it’s giving residents a friendly reminder in the most incredible way. Rather than plastering posters and bulletins on benches and poles in Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, officials deployed a Spot robot made by Boston Dynamics.

Leaker reveals PS5 price and preorder timing
- Sony will reportedly start PS5 preorders as soon as early June, an insider claims.
- The leak is in line with the person’s previous PlayStation 5 leaks that said the console should be unveiled in early June and hit stores in mid-November.
- There’s no evidence to back up any of these claims, however.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
We have yet to actually see it, but the next-gen PS5 is one of the hottest products of the year. That’s assuming Sony launches the PS5 on time this year, considering everything that’s going on right now with the novel coronavirus. This health crisis is probably the reason why the PlayStation 5 design remains a mystery. Sony was supposed to hold a PlayStation event in February or March, but that never happened. Sony didn’t even have time to send out media invites for such an event, so we have no way of knowing whether the company really planned to reveal the new console in early 2020. Sony also pulled out of all other tech events that followed, including MWC and a few gaming shows.
Aside from the PS5 logo reveal at CES 2020, Sony had just two other major PS5 announcements this year, including the PS5 specs announcement and the new DualSense controller unveiling. But a PS5 announcement might be just around the corner, according to several reports from the past few days. Now, one of those leakers claims that PS5 preorders might start very soon.

This startling discovery might protect men from coronavirus
- Doctors studying cohorts of cancer patients who were infected with the novel coronavirus made a startling discovery.
- Men with prostate cancer who were under androgen-deprivation therapy were less likely to get COVID-19, and less likely to develop a severe case if they were infected.
- The researchers think ADT therapy may protect men from the novel coronavirus.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
With each day that goes by, we keep hearing of novel coronavirus therapies that can speed up recovery time and potentially reduce the risk of complications and death. It seems like doctors are throwing everything at the disease to see what sticks, but that’s not exactly the case. They’ve simply had time to observe that some of the drugs that were created for other ailments can help COVID-19 patients as well. One such example is remdesivir, which was developed for Ebola but never used to treat it. Then there’s the controversial hydroxychloroquine, a decades-old anti-malarial that can help some COVID-19 patients, but it’s not as effective and safe as people would have hoped. Anti-viral favipiravir (Avigan) was made for influenza but it might work on COVID-19 as well. And if this new study is right, a treatment that’s usually given to prostate cancer patients could be used to protect men from the novel coronavirus.

Here are this week’s 5 best-selling electronics devices on Amazon
- There’s no question that things like face masks and hand sanitizer are the best-selling products on Amazon right now, but they’re not the only items that are flying off the retailer’s virtual store shelves.
- Amazon’s deals page is hidden right now, but people still have ways to find great deals on all the most popular gadgets out there.
- Here, we check out Amazon’s current best-sellers in the very popular electronics category to see what people are scooping up while they continue to shelter in place.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
If you’re wondering what the best-selling product is right now among BGR Deals readers, the answer really couldn’t be any simpler: face masks. The CDC says on its coronavirus site that EVERYONE should wear a face covering EVERY TIME they leave their homes for any reason. It doesn’t have to be a medical-grade mask, and in fact it absolutely shouldn’t be since there’s still a shortage and healthcare professionals need them desperately. A well-made 3-ply face mask combined with strict social distancing and good hygiene will work wonders to protect you and those around you. Things like bandanas and DIY face masks are fine, but the ones we linked are much better and they’re only $0.78 each right now so you should definitely pick up a box or two before they sell out.
Beyond face masks, electronics are still quite popular among our readers because everyone is looking for new toys to play with while sheltering in place. For example, Apple’s insanely popular AirPods Pro are top sellers since they’re available at the lowest price ever, and both AirPods 2 models have been flying off the shelves as well. None of Apple’s headphones are popular enough to make Amazon’s top-5 list this week, however.
5. Echo Dot with Clock
Amazon’s Echo devices are back on sale this week, which means the most popular among them have once again shot to the top of the site’s best-sellers list. That includes the Echo Dot with Clock, which can be had right now for $39.99 instead of $60.
Echo Dot (3rd Gen) – Smart speaker with clock and Alexa – Sandstone: $39.99
4. Echo Show 8
In the #4 slot, we have another one of Amazon’s most popular devices right now: the Echo Show 8. It’s the perfect size with a nice big 8-inch display that’s still compact enough to fit on your kitchen counter or any table or desk without taking up too much space. The Echo Show 8 is normally $130, but right now it’s on sale with a massive discount that drops it down to its lowest price ever.
Echo Show 8 – HD 8″ smart display with Alexa – Charcoal: $79.99
3. Fire TV Stick 4K
The Echo Dot with Clock was #3 on the list last week, but it got knocked back to #5 by none other than the Fire TV Stick 4K. It’s a fantastic value considering it packs support for 4K resolution and HDR into a tiny dongle, and the Alexa voice remote is fantastic. Also of note, a lucky few people can snag one right now for just $24.99 with the coupon code 4KFIRETV. You can learn more about this special deal right here.
Fire TV Stick 4K streaming device with Alexa built in, Dolby Vision, includes Alexa Voice Remot…: $24.99 (use code 4KFIRETV)
Fire TV Stick 4K streaming device with Alexa built in, Dolby Vision, includes Alexa Voice Remot…: $49.99
2. Echo Dot
The $50 Echo Dot is one of Amazon’s best-selling devices of all time, and a big part of the reason why is because it often goes on sale for even less than $50. Grab one today and you’ll only pay $29.99!
Echo Dot (3rd Gen) – Smart speaker with Alexa – Plum: $29.99 (use code DOT2PACK)
1. Fire TV Stick
Amazon’s Fire TV Stick is one of the company’s best-selling products of all time, so it should come as no surprise that it tops this week’s list. That’s especially true since everyone is stuck at home so much these days, and they’re all streaming more movies and shows than ever before. The Fire TV Stick was sold out for a few weeks but now it’s finally back in stock and ready to ship out this week. There’s no telling how long Amazon’s current inventory will last though, so grab one now if you’re in need of a new streaming media player.
Fire TV Stick streaming media player with Alexa built in, includes Alexa Voice Remote, HD, easy…: $39.99

IRS says a certain type of stimulus check will have to be returned
- Reports of deceased individuals receiving coronavirus stimulus checks have been popping up in recent weeks.
- This week, the IRS updated its website to explain that any Economic Impact Payments sent to people who died before they received the payments need to be returned.
- The IRS wants people to either send back the stimulus checks or write checks for $1,200 to the US Treasury if the money has already been deposited in a bank account.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
When the US Congress passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act in March, it seemed inevitable that there would be more than a few bumps in the road as the government attempted to implement all of the policies it had introduced. Some rolled out surprisingly smoothly, such as the $1,200 Economic Impact Payments, but there have been some kinks for the Treasury Department to work out along the way.
For example, in mid-April, one Indiana resident who was expecting $1,700 from the government found $8.2 million in his bank account on a Friday which had promptly disappeared without a trace by Monday. This only appears to have happened once, but another issue has arisen in recent weeks: Deceased Americans are receiving stimulus checks, and in an updated FAQ on its website, the IRS says that they have to send it back.
