Rivers flowed on Mars for at least 100,000 years, researchers say

  • Mars had vast rivers of flowing water for tens of thousands of years, scientists now say.
  • The discovery is based on images sent back by NASA’s Mars orbiter which revealed sediment deposits and telltale signs of flowing water on the surface of the planet.
  • The rivers date back 3.7 billion years, so it will be difficult to determine if they ever supported life.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

If you’re hunting for signs of past life on a planet like Mars that today appears dry, dusty, and dead, the first thing you have to do is determine if the planet was ever capable of supporting life. Mars is a lot like Earth in that it’s rocky, not too big or too small, and once had a more robust atmosphere. It also had water, and new research suggests that it had a lot of it.

Scientists have believed for some time that Mars was once a lot more blue than red, with bodies of water and if we’re lucky, life. Now, a new study published in Nature Communications suggests that around 3.7 billion years ago, Mars had flowing rivers.

Wild video shows Japanese honeybees ‘cooking’ a murder hornet alive

  • Murder hornets are terrifyingly large and recently made their way to the United States.
  • A murder hornet is beyond painful, but the giant hornets pose a greater threat to local bee populations than to humans.
  • Japanese honeybees can defend themselves from a murder hornet attack by effectively “cooking’ the murder hornet alive with heat from the rapid beating of their wings.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Just when you thought 2020 couldn’t get any crazier, we now have to contend with giant hornets from Asia that are affectionately known as Murder Hornets. Call me old-fashioned, but I’m not really into already-scary insects having the word murder as part of their name.

Murder hornets recently found their way over to the United States and, if we get right down to it, they’re not as terrifying as they look. Sure, they look like pure nightmare fuel — with some queens measuring in at more than two inches long — but the reality is that a single bite from a murder hornet isn’t going to kill you, though it will be incredibly painful. If you’re at all curious, a man who goes by Coyote Peterson got stung by a murder hornet on purpose and filmed the entire experience for our collective enjoyment or horror.

A Marvel show that could bring Iron Man back might be in the works

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Marvel is reportedly planning an Ironheart TV show for Disney+ that could start shooting as soon as next year.
  • The project is in active development for Disney+, according to a new report, but doesn’t have a showrunner for the time being.
  • The TV series could be used to bring back Iron Man, who died at the end of Avengers: Endgame.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The entire Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently on a break because of the novel coronavirus. Black Widow and Eternals were both delayed, and Disney is still looking to make the most of the first MCU Phase 4 movies at the box office. Other projects in development have been paused as well, including the other four films and the eight Disney+ shows that will be part of the new Phase. But as social distancing measures are slowly lifted, production may resume on several of them, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier might still be out this winter.

Marvel is also working on projects that will likely be part of Phase 5 (or later). Captain Marvel 2 is one of them, a title that Marvel already confirmed for July 2022. Deadpool 3 might be another, with a Marvel insider saying recently that the Merc with a Mouth could become a recurring cameo in future Marvel films. And a brand new rumor now claims Marvel has begun work on what may end up being the first post-Endgame Marvel project to feature Iron Man.

‘The Sopranos’ creator David Chase wrote a perfect coronavirus-themed scene

  • It’s been more than a decade since HBO’s The Sopranos ended, but creator David Chase decided to have a little fun recently and write some new coronavirus-themed dialogue for a one-off “scene.”
  • Two former Sopranos cast members performed the dialogue on their podcast, Talking Sopranos, which you can read an excerpt from below.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

First, we had the cast of Parks and Recreation reunite for a one-off, coronavirus-themed reunion episode. Now, The Sopranos creator David Chase has written an all-new scene (coronavirus-themed, of course) incorporating characters including Tony Soprano himself from the classic HBO mob drama — the first such new Sopranos dialogue written by Chase since the beloved series took its bow in 2007.

The scene (which you can read dialogue from below — and, of course, consider this your adult language warning) involves some of the major characters basically sitting around and talking about how much life has changed because of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

This incredible photo of the Moon is actually ‘impossible’

  • Photographer Andrew McCarthy captured an image of the Moon that is quite literally “impossible.”
  • By stitching together over a dozen individual images, McCarthy created a photo that shows the lunar surface in high contrast.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

When you gaze up at the Moon at night — weather permitting, of course — you’re treated to a lovely sight. The Moon is awesome, and it has a whole lot of personality. Covered in craters that tell a story of billions of years of impacts both large and small. The particularly gorgeous image you see above is that same Moon, shot in a way that reveals every nook and cranny in high contrast.

The photo is, as its creator puts it, “impossible.” It was shot using a technique that maximizes the contrast of each tiny imperfection on its surface, making for a glorious, surreal image.

  • Disney+ now has 54.5 million subscribers.
  • Disney+ saw its subscriber base skyrocket by 62% over the last five weeks alone.
  • As a point of comparison, Netflix currently has more than 182 million subscribers across the globe, and 69.9 million subscribers in North America.

Disney posted its earnings results for the recent March quarter and revealed that Disney+ now has more than 54.5 million subscribers. The success of Disney+ was something of a rare bright spot this quarter as Disney saw significant revenue drops across its parks and cruise ship divisions on account of the coronavirus.

The success of Disney+ is beyond impressive given how crowded the streaming market is these days. With established players like Netflix and HBO rolling out new content at breakneck speed, the fact that Disney+ has been able to garner nearly 55 million subscribers in less than five months is nothing short of astounding.

Banksy is back with a new coronavirus piece celebrating health workers

  • The mysterious artist Banksy is back with a new artistic creation, this time inspired by the front-line healthcare workers risking their lives during the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The image is of a young boy ignoring his superhero toys to play with the figure of a nurse that’s wearing a mask and a superhero-like cape. It will eventually be auctioned to raise money for Britain’s NHS charities.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Just a couple of weeks after the famously elusive street artist Banksy unveiled his newest creation — a set of painted rats in his bathroom that reflected the quarantine home life which is now the status quo around the world, thanks to the coronavirus — he’s back with a new piece. It’s another piece that’s related to the current pandemic, but where the last one was lighthearted and fun, this one is a salute to the front-line healthcare workers risking their lives to protect us.

Banksy’s newest piece, which you can see on his Instagram account, is called Game Changer, and it’s also on display inside Southhampton general hospital in the UK. It depicts a young boy ignoring his superhero toys including Batman and Spider-Man to play with the figurine of a nurse who’s masked and wearing a cape. “Thanks for all you’re doing,” reads a note Banksy left for hospital staff. “I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if it’s only black and white.”

EA hints at games being ‘upgraded free’ to PS5 and Xbox Series X

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • EA mentioned in an earnings call that it has to factor in games that can be “upgraded free for the next generation” in its projections for the upcoming year.
  • It’s unclear what exactly they meant by “upgraded free,” but it sounds like both the PS5 and Xbox Series X will be able to play EA games purchased on PS4 and Xbox One.
  • Microsoft has already announced a Smart Delivery feature for Xbox Series X.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

As exciting as new consoles can be, not everyone is ready or willing to upgrade on day one. Both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X are projected to be more expensive at launch than their predecessors, and even if they aren’t, we’re in the middle of a viral pandemic that has also heavily impacted the economy. Simply put, spending hundreds of dollars on a new console isn’t going to be a priority for many people this holiday season, but if they plan to upgrade at some point in the future, they are faced with an interesting dilemma.

If you plan on picking up a PS5 or an Xbox Series X a few months after launch, do you hold off on buying any games until then? We know the Xbox Series X will be backward compatible with the Xbox One, but we don’t know if all new titles will be supported right away. We also know that Sony is planning for the PS5 to be able to play the 100 most-played PS4 games at launch, but that doesn’t sound like it includes brand new titles.

This brings us to an EA earnings call on Tuesday night, during which COO Blake Jorgensen seemed to suggest that the studio’s upcoming games will be playable on both generations with a single purchase.

New coronavirus studies say sending kids back to school would be a major risk

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Two new studies provide evidence that children may transmit the novel coronavirus, even if kids do not develop severe COVID-19 cases and aren’t as likely to experience complications following an infection.
  • The research indicates that social distancing may still be required for children, and decisions on returning school shouldn’t be hurried.
  • One study even showed that asymptomatic children may have viral loads as high as kids or adults showing symptoms, which could mean they’re just as contagious.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Children are less likely to develop severe cases of the novel coronavirus, but there are still exceptions. COVID-19 complications have killed patients under 20 years old, and doctors in the UK and US have already warned about frightening illnesses that have been documented in their countries.

Some people have argued that children might be less likely to contract the disease and less likely to transmit it. If those hypotheses turn out to be accurate, then opening schools in regions where the COVID-19 curve was flattened might make sense. However, new studies indicate that children can transmit the disease, suggesting that going back to school and kindergarten might not be a simple process.

  • Google Meet, Google’s rival to Zoom, went live for everyone this week.
  • Google in recent weeks revamped its video conferencing software and added new features so as to better compete with Zoom.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

With the coronavirus leaving millions of people across the world stuck at home, video conferencing quickly emerged as a popular way for folks to keep in touch with friends and family. Before long, people started using video conferencing software for all sorts of different activities, including playing virtual games and hosting comedy shows.

As the coronavirus pandemic swept across the globe in March, Zoom seemingly came out of nowhere and quickly established itself as the de facto video chat software of choice. And if we’re being honest, it was well-deserved. Though Zoom admittedly had its fair share of security issues early on, the company’s software was more seamless than rival offerings. As a result, Google rushed back to the drawing board to bolster its own video conferencing software known as Google Meet.
