Crazy coronavirus rules show how difficult it will be for restaurants to reopen safely
- In spite of the fact that coronavirus cases and hospitalizations are broadly still on the rise, businesses and local economies in some parts of the country are starting to open back up again.
- Here’s a look at the exhaustive list of coronavirus-related safety procedures, spanning eight pages, that one newly reopened restaurant chain in the South is making employees follow.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
I live in a part of the country that has, unfortunately, decided to hit the ground running early on reopening the state and local economies — “unfortunately,” in the sense that this move seems not at all driven by the latest data on coronavirus cases and hospitalizations, and more about … well, getting people to spend money again.
That will happen first at restaurants here, with those among the businesses people have been most clamoring to be able to get to patronize again beyond merely ordering takeout. However, this may turn out to be a “be careful what you wish for” kind of thing, based on an eight-page document detailing coronavirus-related safety procedures at one particular restaurant chain that’s started reopening here and elsewhere across the South.

Microsoft confirms that Windows 10X is coming to regular laptops
- Microsoft confirmed that the Windows 10X operating system that was announced for dual-screen devices will be available on single-screen laptops as well.
- It’s unclear when Windows 10X will be available to Windows 10 users or how it will work.
- Microsoft also confirmed that dual-screen hardware will come when the time is right.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
It’s unclear why anyone would want to run Windows 10X, the reinvented Windows 10 experience that was imagined for devices featuring two displays, on a standard laptop. Microsoft unveiled Windows 10X last fall when it demoed its own dual-screen laptop, the Surface Neo that was supposed to launch this fall. Then we heard reports that Windows 10X would be available on Windows 10 notebooks, which Microsoft confirmed on Monday.
When will Surface Neo and all of the other dual-screen Windows 10X devices launch? That’s a question Microsoft will answer another time.

NASA rates Blue Origin higher than SpaceX for Artemis Moon landings
- SpaceX scores an “Acceptable” rating by NASA for Artemis mission contracts, while Blue Origin is rated “Very Good.”
- The evaluation document reveals concerns over previous mission delays that plagued past SpaceX projects for NASA.
- NASA selected SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Dynetics as its partners for the upcoming Artemis missions.

SpaceX may be the undisputed leader in commercial spaceflight but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be the most capable when it comes to landing on the Moon, a new NASA evaluation reveals. Last week, NASA announced the trio of companies it is partnering with in order to help send astronauts to the Moon for the first time in decades. Those companies were SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Dynetics.
However, as Space News reports, NASA doesn’t see SpaceX in the same light as its two peers. SpaceX has long been a partner of NASA, but in terms of the company’s role in the upcoming Artemis moon missions, the space agency is seemingly skeptical.

‘The Last of Us Part II’ leak: Here’s how it happened
- The Last of Us Part II is one of the last major first-party releases for the PlayStation 4 ahead of the launch of the PlayStation 5 this holiday season.
- In April, a major leak on YouTube spoiled some of the most important story moments from The Last of Us Part II, and some suspected that a disgruntled employee might be the culprit.
- Multiple reports now say that hackers took advantage of a security vulnerability to gain access to Naughty Dog’s servers and steal at least 1TB of content.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The next generation of video game consoles is just months away, but there are still a few major blockbusters planned for this generation in the interim. Perhaps the most notable of all of them is The Last of Us Part II, the sequel to one of 2013’s most critically-acclaimed releases, but developer Naughty Dog was thrown for a loop last week when a flood of spoilers popped up online as part of a massive leak of mysterious origin.
Videos were uploaded to YouTube last week that appeared to show off gameplay and cutscenes from The Last of Us Part II, spoiling key moments from the story. The footage also featured debug information at the bottom of the screen, leading some to speculate that a disgruntled Naughty Dog employee might have been behind the leak. But on Friday, Sony confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that the people behind the video leak were “not affiliated with Sony Interactive Entertainment or Naughty Dog,” and now evidence suggests that hackers were to blame.

John Oliver explains what we need to do to reopen US
- Comedian John Oliver explained in a segment on his HBO show Last Week Tonight why testing for the novel coronavirus is important and how it should work.
- Oliver addressed both the COVID-19 diagnostic tests and the immunity tests, detailing all the testing problems that hindered America’s response to the pandemic.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
After weeks of social distancing measures, it’s unsurprising to hear that people want to get back to normal. Whether they’re politicians, business people, or employees who’ve lost their jobs, they’re not entirely wrong to say the economy needs to reopen. But easing measures without concrete plans to reduce the risk of future outbreaks and to mitigate future local epidemics will only get us back where we started.
Communities that aren’t able to handle their COVID-19 caseload and diagnose as many coronavirus patients as possible will be doomed to repeat the lockdown experience. And this John Oliver report explains that the US is still failing at one of the two key activities needed to keep any highly contagious disease in check: Testing.

As the US starts to reopen, the CDC expects coronavirus deaths to skyrocket
- State and local economies around the US are gradually starting to open up again since the onset of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic forced them to take extraordinary measures to limit people from being out in public to control the spread of the virus.
- Protests around the country against those measures have started to multiply. Meantime, the Trump administration has now revised upward the number of Americans expected to die from the coronavirus — the total is now expected to approach 3,000 people every day through June 1.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Around the US, states and cities are gradually starting to pull back on stay-at-home orders so that economies can start opening up again. It’s less about having seen a steady drop in coronavirus case numbers than a feeling that if people adhere to social distancing and hygiene guidelines, the virus should be manageable going forward. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has quietly adjusted its internal estimates upward regarding how many people are expected to die from the coronavirus — some 3,000 Americans a day through June 1, with President Trump himself during a TV appearance on Sunday night now putting the total figure at closer to 100,000, up from 65,000.

Uber drivers and passengers will be required to wear face masks
- Uber passengers and drivers will soon be required to wear face masks before being allowed to pick up passengers.
- Uber is working on facial recognition technology capable of identifying when a driver is wearing a face covering.
- The rule will be applied in areas hit especially hard by the coronavirus pandemic.

With the coronavirus bringing much of the country to a standstill, essential businesses that have been allowed to remain open have been forced to tweak the way they do business. Restaurants, for example, now require patrons picking up food to adhere to social distancing guidelines. Some grocery stores, meanwhile, have started limiting the number of customers that can be inside at a given time.
Additionally, many states recently started implementing new guidelines with respect to wearing face masks out in public. In Illinois, for example, grocery stores — or any type of establishment that draws in large numbers of people — will not even let customers inside if they’re not wearing a face covering. It’s essentially something of a trade-off as some states begin to relax stay-at-home directives.

Carnival Cruise Line is planning to resume sailing on August 1st
- Carnival Cruise Line announced on Monday that it plans to resume sailing this summer, phasing in some cruises as early as August in the United States.
- Carnival is offering steep discounts to lure consumers into booking a cruise.
- Cruise lines were hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic following a spate of horror stories earlier in the year when cruise ships were turned away from ports due to infection fears.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The United States was very slow to react to the coronavirus outbreak, and as a result, cities and states from coast to coast have been shut down for weeks, with no end in sight for some of them. Even when they do begin to reopen, as Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, and others have decided to do, they will have to be exceeding careful to ensure that the infection rate doesn’t explode, prompting another shut down before their health care systems collapse.
While some states are jumping into the deep end, others, like New York, are taking a much more gradual approach, opening only the most essential of businesses in areas that have had relatively low rates of infection. That way, even if the infection rate begins to rise again, they can flip the switch and shut everything back down. This is an incredibly precarious situation, but despite all of this, Carnival Cruise Line is already planning its reopening.
