This is the most dangerous place in a supermarket during the coronavirus pandemic

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Grocery stores have been one of the few public places to remain open during the coronavirus pandemic.
  • As lockdowns and shelter-in-place orders start to end around the US, and the pandemic enters a new phase here, it’s safe to say that shoppers are going to be visiting grocery stores and supermarkets in even greater numbers soon.
  • Even with social distancing guidelines and other coronavirus-related safety measures, there’s one place above all others inside the store to be aware of as the most dangerous for workers and guests.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Whenever I’ve made a trip to the grocery store since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, I’ve donned a mask, been mindful about touching as little as possible, and tried to socially distance myself from the other shoppers according to the guidelines from health officials. Turns out, though, the most dangerous spot in grocery stores and supermarkets might be the place some of you least expect it — the cash register.

Here’s why. Take a retailer like Walmart, which has implemented coronavirus-related safety measures in its stores that include providing masks for workers and setting up plexiglass barriers to protect cashiers. But stop and think about the cashiers for a moment – they stand, for the entirety of their shift, at an arm’s length or so away from customers, which is much closer than the six-foot distance recommended by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Also, every item they scan and bag has been grabbed and touched by customers and possibly other store employees, some of whom might have the virus.

Taika Waititi is going to write and direct a ‘Star Wars’ movie

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Disney announced on Monday that Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi will direct a Star Wars movie and co-write the screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairns.
  • In addition to Thor: Ragnarok, Waititi previously directed the season finale of The Mandalorian for Disney, and is currently working on Thor: Love and Thunder.
  • Disney also confirmed that Leslye Headland (Russian Doll) is making a Dsney+ Star Wars series.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Following the mixed reaction to the new generation of Star Wars stories — from a theatrical sequel trilogy to series of spinoffs to live-action shows on the Disney+ streaming service — Disney decided to take a step back and reevaluate its plans for the franchise. Flooding theaters with Star Wars wasn’t the best strategy after all.

Of course, the problem wasn’t just that there was too much Star Wars, but rather that there wasn’t a coherent vision to what Disney was trying to accomplish. Disney also owns Marvel Studios, and people will return to the theater over and over to see movies set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe because they know what to expect. On the other hand, Disney doesn’t appear to know what to do with the $4 billion property that is Star Wars, but now that the Skywalker saga has finally concluded, it appears that the company is going in a new direction.

Doctors discovered a bizarre new coronavirus complication that no one can explain

  • Doctors treating novel coronavirus patients in the UK have noticed a condition they call “happy hypoxia” in severe COVID-19 cases.
  • Blood oxygen levels can drop to dangerous levels, but patients are still conscious and responsive when they shouldn’t be.
  • The doctors can’t explain why it happens or how the body compensates for the lack of oxygen.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

We’ve been talking about the novel coronavirus and its many complications for what feels like years now, although it’s only been a few months. Most people already know that COVID-19 can mimic a common cold or it can come and go without presenting any symptoms at all. The elderly and people with preexisting conditions are at risk of developing a severe COVID-19 case, which can often come with significant respiratory issues that can require oxygen therapy and ventilation. And now, doctors have encountered a new type of severe COVID-19 complication they call “happy hypoxia.” That’s because the patients who show this condition are in incredible respiratory distress, yet they show no real signs that their oxygen levels are dangerously low.

Here’s when the next round of coronavirus stimulus checks will arrive

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The IRS knows millions of Americans right now are asking ‘Where’s my stimulus payment?” referring to the $1,200 and $2,400 coronavirus stimulus checks being issued directly to Americans from the tax agency.
  • The payments are a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic and meant to help alleviate some of the economic suffering stemming from it.
  • Here’s a schedule for when some of the next stimulus checks from the IRS will arrive.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The IRS is reminding people who depend on Supplemental Security Income — a benefits program meant to help meet basic needs for the blind, disabled, and the elderly — that they need to act by Tuesday (May 5) if they didn’t file a tax return in 2018 or 2019 in order to receive their portion of the IRS’ stimulus check disbursements.

The tax agency says those payments will be issued soon and arrive around the middle of this month for those recipients. If recipients have eligible dependants and they didn’t file a tax return for the last two years, they’ll need to act fast in order to get the $500 per eligible child payment tacked on to their $1,200 or $2,400 stimulus check. All those recipients need to do is quickly utilize the special Non-Filers tool at IRS.gov by Tuesday, May 5, which is available in English and Spanish, in order for their benefits to arrive at the same time in the form of a single check.

Coronavirus might be able to survive in water

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Research has shown that coronavirus can survive in water for an extended period of time, but that doesn’t mean it poses a threat to the average person.
  • No traces of the novel coronavirus have been found in water supplies in the United States, according to the EPA.
  • Sewage treatment workers may be at heightened risk, but the measures they already use to protect themselves from viruses and bacteria should stop this virus as well.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

We all know by now that the primary route of transmission of the novel coronavirus is through the air. Droplets that an infected person exhales, coughs, or sneezes out can carry the virus. A healthy person who breathes those droplets in, or touches a contaminated surface and then rubs their eyes, nose, or mouth can easily become infected. But what happens when the virus enters the water?

Reliable studies on the new coronavirus and its interaction with water are scarce (well, non-existent might be a better term), but as Forbes points out, there are a few things we know about how similar viruses deal with water, and research into coronavirus concentrations in sewage give us a rough idea of how dangerous this route of transmission truly is.

The scariest coronavirus symptom might be more serious than we thought

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Blood clotting is among the more severe symptoms of the novel coronavirus disease, as several reports and studies have said in the past few weeks.
  • A report from Italy says that doctors who performed autopsies on COVID-19 victims noticed a serious blood disorder that might cause respiratory side effects, including pneumonia.
  • Other doctors treating COVID-19 patients have noticed an increased risk of blood clotting that could lead to stroke or a heart attack.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Several reports have revealed in the past few weeks a few strange symptoms of the novel coronavirus. Doctors in various countries noticed that some of the people admitted to hospitals on suspicion of a heart attack were actually infected with the virus. Others found that the patients who seemed to feature symptomatology pointing to neurological problems were also found to be COVID-19 positive. We then learned that an increasing number of young adults came to the emergency room with signs of a stroke, and it turned out these vascular incidents were all caused by blood clotting due to the virus. Separately, researchers who studied clotting in COVID-19 patients found a new vascular disorder caused by the virus, which they called pulmonary intravascular coagulopathy (PIC). They reasoned that PIC is “primarily focussed within the lungs” and “undoubtedly contributes to the high levels of mortality being seen in patients with COVID-19.”

It turns out that blood clotting due to the novel coronavirus might be a lot more severe than we thought, and some doctors in Italy believe that the hematological symptoms are what cause pulmonary complications.

Amazon’s big Bose sale has a huge surprise

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Unless you know where to look, it’s harder than ever to find good deals right now on Amazon because the retailer’s top deals page is now hidden. Things are finally starting to rebalance following Amazon’s recent move to devote a huge chunk of resources to delivering medical supplies for hospitals and government customers. That means lead times for many nonessential order deliveries are finally starting to come back down to a week or two instead of a month or even longer.

If you’re looking for great deals on popular products that are available to ship out soon, we’ve got a bunch of good news for you today. Amazon’s best-selling face masks are back in stock, for example, and Apple’s AirPods and AirPods Pro are discounted and ready to ship. But there’s another big sale right now on Amazon that you need to check out, and it covers some of the hottest personal audio products ever made.

Amazon is offering a bunch of great deals on popular Bose speakers and wireless headphones, and we dug through them all to pick out the five best bargains. Some of them are familiar deals that have returned somewhat unexpectedly considering Amazon’s current shift in focus away from nonessential products. Other deals are a bit more surprising, however, such as a deal no one saw coming that offers an extremely rare discount on the hot new Bose 700 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones.

Bose Noise Cancelling Wireless Bluetooth Headphones 700, with Alexa Voice Control, Black: $349.00

Those are Bose’s latest and greatest ANC headphones and they’re by far the best model that Bose has ever made. That said, they’re still a bit pricey even with a discount that matches the all-time low, so there are two other Bose headphones deals you should definitely consider. The wildly popular Bose QuietComfort 35 II Wireless Noise Cancelling Bluetooth Headphones get a $50 discount to $299, and Bose’s first and only true wireless earbuds, the Bose SoundSport Free, get an even bigger discount to an all-time low of $139.

Bose QuietComfort 35 II Wireless Bluetooth Headphones, Noise-Cancelling, with Alexa voice contr…: $299.00

Bose SoundSport Free, True Wireless Earbuds, (Sweatproof Bluetooth Headphones for Workouts and…: $139.00

If you’re looking for speakers instead, there are two Amazon deals in particular that you’ll likely be interested in. The Bose Solo 5 TV Soundbar Sound System everyone loves so much is down to $199 from $250, and the Bose Home Speaker 500 with killer sound quality and hands-free Alexa voice control gets a big $100 discount to $299.
