Robots are now greeting coronavirus patients in Japan
- Some hotels in Japan are now being used to house patients experiencing mild coronavirus symptoms.
- Patients arriving at one such hotel in Tokyo are being greeted by a robot named Pepper that, in addition to offering up pleasantries, can also provide guests with simple directions.

With many hospitals operating at or near capacity on account of the coronavirus, we’ve seen some interesting approaches to dealing with patients who either have light corona symptoms or who need medical care for other reasons.
Just a few weeks ago, for example, New York City brought in a floating hospital called the U.S.N.S comfort to help treat patients suffering from ailments outside of the coronavirus. It was an interesting idea, but the ship didn’t prove to be as useful as anticipated and was only docked for about four weeks before departing.

Is Marvel bringing Iron Man back for more Avengers movies?
- Some questionable rumors claim that Marvel will bring back Iron Man for future MCU movies, although we’re far from getting any news about Marvel’s plans beyond Phase 4.
- Recent comments from Avengers: Endgame co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo, as well as the Iron Man star himself Robert Downey Jr., suggest there may be a future in the MCU for the dead superhero.
- Bringing Tony Stark back after his heroic Endgame death would have to be done in such a manner that it doesn’t ruin Endgame.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Two things make Avengers: Endgame the ultimate superhero movie, but they’re both valid only if you’re a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and have seen every single film released before the epic conclusion that made nearly $3 billion at the box office. First of all, Endgame is the culmination of 10 years of intertwined MCU stories. Like in Infinity War, you get to see all these characters come together on screen in new ways. The more familiar with are with all of them, the more satisfying the film is. Secondly, Endgame is one of the few superhero movies where it’s clear from the beginning that you’re not going to get a perfect happy end. In most superheroes flicks, the bad guys die and the good guys survive. It’s rare to get a darker tone in superhero movies and even more unusual to see some of your favorite characters perish in order to help save the day.
The question is, will Marvel be tempted to ruin Endgame in the years to come?

‘The Matrix 4’ stunt coordinators to fans of the original trilogy: ‘You’re gonna love this’
- The Matrix movie franchise is finally getting a long-awaited fourth installment, Matrix 4, which had been set to open in May of 2021 — though that date may get pushed back because of having to pause filming during the coronavirus pandemic.
- The film’s stunt coordinators have given a new interview in which they promise that fans who loved the original trilogy are “gonna love this” too.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Fans of the original Matrix movie trilogy haven’t exactly been keeping their powder dry and adopting a wait-and-see attitude about whether the long-awaited fourth installment in the franchise will be any good. Pre-coronavirus, you only had to open Facebook or Twitter and do a quick search to be met with a flood of breathless posts from users positively giddy over the images and few seconds of hastily-snapped footage they captured on-set, back when Matrix 4 was still shooting in and around San Francisco, which back in February was briefly home to a dystopian-looking movie set that featured everything from explosions and wrecked cars to melted city lamps nearby.
Actor sightings. Scenes filmed amid downtown San Francisco skyscrapers. It was still a few weeks before the coronavirus changed everything, and what a happy time that was.

Spies are already trying to steal coronavirus vaccine secrets
- US, UK, and Canadian intelligence officials have warned there may be nation-states looking to spy on vaccine research for the novel coronavirus.
- It’s unclear if any vaccine data was stolen or what vaccine candidates may have been targeted, but authorities are aware of hacker campaigns targeting medical researchers.
- Some vaccine candidates may be approved for emergency use as soon as this fall, but it may take years for the world’s population to be inoculated.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
If ever there was a time for the entire world to put aside its differences and work together toward the greater good, the novel coronavirus pandemic is it. Sure, there will be increased cooperation between countries to keep this disease in check as much as possible until a vaccine is found. But, if it wasn’t already clear from the various political attacks that we’ve been witnessing since the emergence of the new virus, it won’t be a smooth ride. Not even vaccine development will be spared, as spies are already trying to steal coronavirus secrets.

How to get HBO Max at a discount
- HBO Max launches on May 27th for $14.99/month.
- If you are a new or returning subscriber, you can take advantage of a limited-time promotion to get HBO Max for $11.99/month for the first twelve months.
- If you sign up for the promo, you will get access to HBO Now immediately.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
HBO began offering access to its content in the form of an à la carte subscription service years ago with HBO Now, but as the streaming wars heat up, simply giving viewers the ability to watch your shows and movies on any device in their home isn’t enough. Consumers expect original content made specifically for those services, and that’s why HBO Max was created. Launching on May 27th, HBO Max has all of the shows, movies, and specials HBO has produced over the years in addition to original programming that can’t be found anywhere else.
HBO Max will cost $14.99/month (the same price as HBO Now), but for a limited time, HBO is knocking a few dollars off the price of the monthly subscription for preorderers. According to the HBO Max website, anyone who preorders a subscription will pay $11.99/month for the first twelve months of service. The offer is available to new subscribers and eligible returning HBO Now subscribers, though it’s not clear who exactly is eligible.

Texas is Exhibit A for how not to reopen a state after coronavirus
- The next battlefront in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic is over when and how states around the country will execute reopening plans.
- Texas on Friday, for example, began a controversial reopening of many businesses, like malls, movie theaters, and retail stores (albeit at a reduced capacity). This comes as the number of cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus there has continued to rise — which is more or less what’s also still happening around the country, too.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
We’re still maybe a year away from the arrival of a vaccine that can successfully fend off the coronavirus. In the most recent note posted to his GatesNotes blog, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates — whose foundation is at the vanguard of the global fight against the coronavirus — writes that he thinks the timeframe for development of a vaccine “could be as little as 9 months or as long as two years.”
Regulators, meanwhile, are still looking for the right drug or combination of drugs that can serve as a treatment for the virus. Which means, among other things, life absolutely will not go back to its pre-coronavirus normal for a while longer. A fact that isn’t stopping states like Texas from barreling toward a reopening of their economies and civic life in a way that some people are rejoicing over — and others worry will lead to a new spike in coronavirus cases.

We catch up with Greg Daniels, creator of ‘The Office,’ about his new Amazon show
- Amazon debuted a new series on Friday called Upload, created by Greg Daniels — a TV comedy veteran who was responsible for hit comedies like The Office and Parks and Recreation.
- This new series reimagines the afterlife, and presents a sci-fi future wherein humans can “upload” their consciousness to a digital heaven.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
In one of the opening moments of the new Amazon sci-fi series Upload that debuted on Friday, we see people sitting on a subway who can hold their hands apart to watch a movie on a virtualized screen between them. The year is 2033, and in this place and time of boundless technology advancements, cops pull over speeding cars remotely, with the help of drones hovering outside the driver’s window. Self-driving bicycles allow their owners to hop off once they get home while the bike continues on its journey, and store cashiers are merely giant mechanical arms scanning items, obviating the need for human pleasantries exchanged between customers and store clerks.
And yet, all of those high-tech bells and whistles are just the mere windup for what’s eventually revealed as the big idea at the heart of this high-concept series: It’s the fact that people in this world can choose to either die and be on their way to a real, actual afterlife, or they can instead “upload” their consciousness to a perfect, pristine, albeit digital Great Beyond that’s just the way they’d like it (except for this one being, you know, virtual and not “real”).

A drug thought to worsen coronavirus infections might actually help people recover
- Three separate observational studies analyzed the use of certain blood pressure medicine that some coronavirus patients might be taking and concluded that the drugs aren’t risk factors for COVID-19.
- The drugs the doctors analyzed are angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin-receptor blockers (ARBs), which some people believed might impact the ACE2 protein that the virus binds to.
- The findings are relevant because people suffering from hypertension should continue to take their blood pressure regardless of whether they’re infected with the new virus or not.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Hypertension and any other sort of cardiovascular disease are all factors for people who are infected with the novel coronavirus. The older the patients are, the greater the risk of developing potentially life-threatening COVID-19 complications. But researches keep delivering good news that will hopefully improve the outcome of severe coronavirus cases and increase the chances of survival. Earlier this week, we heard that remdesivir will become the standard treatment for COVID-19, as the drug can speed up recovery times. An extensive study found no conclusive proof that the drug can reduce the number of fatalities though, so people might still die of COVID-19 complications. But vaccine research is advancing at lightning speed and a vaccine might be ready for emergency use as soon as this fall. The general population might even get one in January if everything works out, at least in some countries.
Getting back to high blood pressure, a very common condition, researchers from three separate teams have now delivered the same good news. Certain hypertension drugs that may interact with the ACE2 cell receptors that the SARS-CoV-2 virus binds to are not a risk factor for COVID-19 patients. That means physicians can continue to prescribe the much-needed medicines that control high blood pressure to coronavirus patients without worrying it may pose a risk, as had previously been rumored.
