Terrifying video shows how easy it is to get coronavirus while flying

  • Airlines might be looking to reassure passengers that flying during the coronavirus pandemic will be safe, but there are no guarantees right now.
  • We know that a SARS patient infected 22 people on a plane during a three-hour flight from Hong Kong to Beijing during the 2003 pandemic.
  • Research that followed shows that coughing inside the cabin might expose other people to a pathogen even if social distancing measures are in place on flights.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

I showed you a scary study from China a few days ago that told us it will be a while until we can trust restaurants again. The economy will open slowly and you’re probably dying to eat out, but that study suggested social distancing measures in a restaurant might not be good enough to stop the potential spread of the coronavirus. It’s not the food that’s the problem, it’s the ventilation system in closed quarters that may promote transmission. Researchers found that a single person with COVID-19 was responsible for infecting two other families eating in the same restaurant, after being exposed to each other for about an hour. The air-conditioning unit may have spread the virus to other tables, that research said.

I’m now about to show you a clip of what happens when someone coughs inside the cabin of an airplane, and the conclusion might be even worse. It will be a while before we’re at ease flying. Unlike restaurants, planes have more advanced air filtering systems that might prevent infection. However, it seems clear that won’t be enough to reduce exposure to the virus.

Xbox Series X games could be delayed

  • Xbox boss Phil Spencer said in an interview this week that although the Xbox Series X is still on schedule to launch this holiday season, games might be delayed due to the coronavirus.
  • Spencer says that the security and safety of the teams making games for the Xbox Series X is the priority, and he won’t push them unnecessarily just to hit a deadline.
  • Several major 2020 video games have already been delayed, including Minecraft Dungeons, The Last of Us 2, and Ghost of Tsushima.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

As exciting as the steady rollout of details about a new video game console is, the reason we buy these machines is to play games on them. Microsoft revealed the design of the Xbox Series X, as well as the specifications and features it will ship with, but we haven’t actually seen any new games running on the console yet. That’s going to change next week when Microsoft shows off next-gen gameplay for the first time in a new episode of Inside Xbox.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that we might be waiting even longer than we expected to get our hands on many of those games. Speaking with CNBC’s Squawk Alley on Thursday, Microsoft executive VP of gaming and Xbox boss Phil Spencer said that the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic won’t affect the release date of the Xbox Series X, but it might impact the games set to hit the console in the months to come.

Doctors finally understand one of the scary ways coronavirus kills

  • Researchers have figured out why the novel coronavirus can lead to strokes and heart attacks.
  • Doctors from Ireland observed that severe COVID-19 patients are more likely to develop tiny blood clots in the pulmonary region.
  • These blood clots can then travel to the brain or heart where they’d be responsible for strokes or heart attacks. They’re also responsible for reducing oxygenation in the lungs, the study says
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The novel coronavirus’s attack on the human body is so complex that it can lead to a slew of unexpected symptoms and complications that can be deadly. Neurologists observed a few weeks ago that some of their patients who were displaying symptoms consistent with a neurological disease, including confusion and seizures, were infected with SARS-CoV-2. A few days ago, we found out that one of the strangest COVID-19 symptoms is also one of the deadliest. Doctors from the Mount Sinai Health system noticed an increase in young patients with stroke symptoms. All of them tested COVID-19 positive, raising the possibility that the virus is responsible for creating blood clots that can reach the brain and then block local arteries. It turns out the disease can indeed lead to increased blood coagulation, and that tiny blood clots can develop right in the lungs. Now, researchers have finally figured out how it all happens.

Alexa and Google-enabled smart plugs are under $5 for the first time in months

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • People stuck at home during coronavirus lockdown have been finding all sorts of nifty new things to do with Wi-Fi smart plugs.
  • If you haven’t already gotten in on the action, Amazon is offering 4-packs of Aoycocr Mini Smart Plugs for just $19.79 with a special coupon.
  • That drops the per-plug price to just $4.95, which is the lowest price we’ve seen in months for Alexa and Google Assistant-compatible smart plugs.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

There is no question whatsoever right now as far as which product is the most popular among BGR Deals readers. Amazon’s best-selling face masks are literally flying off the virtual store shelves, and it’s easy to see why since the CDC recommends that all of us wear face masks like these every single time we have to leave our homes. Sure you can make your own using t-shirts and DIY instructions you find online, but these are far more effective and they’re only $0.80 each. It’s certainly easy to see why they’re so popular.

As important as face masks are right now — though we should note that they’re only effective when used in combination with strict social distancing and good hygiene — there are other things our readers have been buying up as well. One example is smart plugs, which also makes sense. We’re all stuck at home for quite a while, so why not spend some of that time indoors creating cool smart home solutions?

Another reason smart plugs are so popular right now is because of sales like the one we’re about to show you. Aoycocr Mini Smart Plugs are some of the most popular ones we cover, and they’re also very well-rated on Amazon. 4-packs are typically $33, which is the going rate on Amazon for many brands, but there’s a sale right now that slashes them down to the lowest price we’ve seen in months. Just use the coupon code 40ULRNRJ at checkout and you can pick up a 4-pack of Aoycocr Mini Smart Plugs for just $19.79 total. That’s only $4.95 per plug!

Save 40% Aoycocr Smart Home Mini Wifi Outlets with Alexa and Google – No Hub Required: $19.79 ($4.95 each) (use code 40ULRNRJ by 5/28)

Here are some more key details from the product page on Amazon:

  • Voice Control with Ease: Compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and IFTTT, allowing you to control the outlet through the use of simple voice commands. DOES NOT CURRENTLY SUPPORT SmartThings, Homekit (though you can use them through IFTTT support)
  • Control from Anywhere: With the Aoycocr Smart app you can access and manage any small appliances from anywhere, creating a truly smart home experience all in one app – A secured 2.4GHz WiFi network is required
  • Schedule & Timer: Customized schedule lights, fans, and any home electronics or appliances to turn on and off automatically, or control them remotely when you’re away. Get ready to smart your home stuff and automation
  • Simple to set up: Plugin a wall outlet, easily follow instruction steps to connect your smart plug to your existing 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. Then start using your smart app or voice to turn to control the power
  • More Important & Guaranteed: Device sharing allows you to share with your family members. FCC/ROHS Approved and Overload protection provided complete security. No hub required. Offer backed with 90-day money back, 2-year warranty and lifetime support

Chinese media slams US coronavirus response in incredible viral video

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • A war of words between the US and China has been escalating this week, with both sides directing increasingly pointed criticism at the other as the response to the coronavirus pandemic that originated in China enters a new phase.
  • Tensions between both countries were already strained pre-coronavirus. And now, a video released by a Chinese state-run media outlet uses Legos to blast what it presents as a bumbling US response to the deadly COVID-19 coronavirus. The video presents China as the hero of the coronavirus pandemic, naturally.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

So it’s come to this. Tensions between the US and China, which were already strained well before the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, have apparently hit enough of a low that a state-run media agency in the country has released a video in which cute Lego characters depict the respective responses to the pandemic from both China and the US. (Spoiler: The video shows China as the good guys and the US as bumbling fools).

The video was released on Thursday by the Xinhua News Agency, following President Trump’s declaration on Wednesday that China’s central government is purposefully working to hurt the president’s re-election chances. “The high-volume attacks against China, including absurd and ill-disposed calls for inquiry, lawsuits, and compensation to hold China liable for coronavirus damage, all stem from the desperate effort to divert domestic attention and shield their own incompetence and mistakes from scrutiny,” the Chinese media outlet shot back on Friday.

Check out Amazon’s 5 best-selling electronics devices of the week

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Amazon’s best-sellers lists give shoppers a great way to not only see which devices on Amazon’s site are most popular, but also often to find the best deals on Amazon at any given time.
  • That’s particularly important now since Amazon’s deal page is hidden while the company continues to focus mainly on shipping medical supplies to hospitals.
  • Here, we dig into Amazon’s current best-sellers in the electronics category to see what people are buying for their coronavirus quarantines.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

If you’re wondering what the best-selling product is right now among BGR Deals readers, the answer really couldn’t be any simpler: face masks. The CDC recommends on its coronavirus site that EVERYONE should wear a face covering EVERY TIME they leave the house for any reason. This is absolutely crucial. It doesn’t have to be a medical-grade mask, and in fact it absolutely shouldn’t be since there’s still a shortage and healthcare professionals need them desperately. A good 3-ply face mask combined with strict social distancing and good hygiene will work wonders to protect you and those around you. Things like bandanas and DIY face masks are fine, but the ones we linked are much better and they’re only $0.80 each right now.

Beyond face masks, electronics are still quite popular among our readers because everyone is looking for new toys to play with while sheltering in place. For example, Apple’s insanely popular AirPods Pro are top sellers since they’re available at the lowest price ever, and both AirPods 2 models have been flying off the shelves as well. None of Apple’s headphones are popular enough to make Amazon’s top-5 list this week, however.

5. Roku Streaming Stick+

The only line of streaming media players that outsell Amazon’s Fire TV devices globally are Roku players, and the best of the bunch is #5 on this week’s list of Amazon’s best-selling electronics. The Roku Streaming Stick+ is a tiny dongle that supports 4K as well as HDR content, and it’s on sale right now for just $49 instead of $60.

Roku Streaming Stick+ | HD/4K/HDR Streaming Device with Long-range Wireless and Voice Remote wi…: $49.00

4. Nintendo Switch Lite

That’s right, the Nintendo Switch Lite is finally back in stock on Amazon! Several colors are available right now but gray continues to be the top-seller. There’s no way Amazon’s inventory will last more than a few days though, so hurry up and grab one before they sell out yet again.

Nintendo Switch Lite – Gray: $199.00

3. Fire TV Stick 4K

The Echo Dot with Clock was #3 on the list last week, but it got knocked out of the top 5 by none other than the Fire TV Stick 4K. It’s a fantastic value considering it packs support for 4K resolution and HDR into a tiny dongle, and the Alexa voice remote is fantastic. Also of note, a lucky few people can snag one right now for just $24.99 with the coupon code 4KFIRETV. You can learn more about this special deal right here.

2. Echo Dot

The $50 Echo Dot is one of Amazon’s best-selling devices of all time, and a big part of the reason why is because it often goes on sale for even less than $50. Grab one today and you’ll pay the regular $49.99 price for Amazon’s most popular Alexa speaker. Only a crazy person would do that though because you can use the coupon code DOT2PACK to get two Echo Dots for the same $49.99 price!

Echo Dot (3rd Gen) – Smart speaker with Alexa – Plum: $49.99 ($24.99 each) (use code DOT2PACK)

1. Fire TV Stick

Amazon’s Fire TV Stick is one of the company’s best-selling products of all time, so it should come as no surprise that it tops this week’s list. That’s especially true since everyone is stuck at home so much these days, and they’re all streaming more movies and shows than ever before. The Fire TV Stick was sold out for a few weeks but now it’s finally back in stock and ready to ship out this week. There’s no telling how long Amazon’s current inventory will last though, so grab one now if you’re in need of a new streaming media player.

Anker’s best-selling fast wireless charger is down to $7.99 for the first time ever

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Anker’s PowerWave Pad is the best-selling fast wireless charger the company has ever made, which is saying a lot considering how many different popular wireless chargers Anker sells.
  • It’s a simple model that supports wireless charging speeds up to 10W, and it typically sells for $14 or $15.
  • Hurry over to Amazon right now, and you’ll be able to buy a PowerWave Pad wireless charger for just $7.99 with a special coupon — that’s the lowest price ever for this top-selling model.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Like other charging accessories Anker sells, the company’s wireless charging pads are legendary. It might seem like all wireless chargers are created equal, but anyone who has bought a wireless charger from a no-name brand and had it overheat or die a few months later knows that’s not the case at all. Anker’s products are a cut above the rest, and yet they’re still remarkably affordable. The best-selling Anker PowerWave Pad 10W Fast Wireless Charger pictured above, for example, normally sells for just $14 or $15 over at Amazon.

That is already a fantastic price for such a high-quality wireless charging pad that supports fast wireless charging speeds up to 10W, but you’ll only pay about half that much if you head over to Amazon right now. Thanks to a special coupon code that’s available from now until May 10th, you can get your hands on this best-selling model for just $7.99! That’s a new all-time low price, beating the $8.49 price tag we saw ahead of the holidays around Black Friday last year and a few times earlier this year. Just use the coupon code AKA25332 at checkout and you’re all set.

Anker Wireless Charger, PowerWave Pad, Compatible iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, Xs Max, XR, XS…: $7.99 (use code AKA25332 by 5/10)

Here are some of the key details from Amazon’s product page:

  • The Anker Advantage: Enjoyed by over 50 million happy users worldwide, our leading technology will change the way you charge.
  • The Need for Speed: With a high-efficiency chipset providing 10W high-speed charging for Samsung Galaxy, and a 5W charging mode to charge iPhones 10% faster than other brands, PowerWave is bridging the gap between wireless and wired charging speeds. For best results, use a Quick Charge adapter (9V/2A) for Samsung Galaxy charging and a 5V/2A adapter for iPhone.
  • LED Indicator: The LED indicator lets you know the charging status. If the indicator is FLASHING BLUE, check to make sure that there are no objects between your phone and the charging surface. If the indicator is FLASHING GREEN, make sure you are using a 5V/2A or above adapter, or try a different adapter and cable.
  • Case Friendly: Don’t fumble with your phone case. PowerWave transmits charging power directly through protective cases. Rubber/plastic/TPU cases UNDER 5 MM THICKNESS ONLY. Metal attachments or cards will prevent charging.
  • What You Get: PowerWave Pad, Micro USB Cable, welcome guide, worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Fauci just delivered fantastic news about coronavirus vaccines

  • Dr. Anthony Fauci said in an interview that a coronavirus vaccine might be widely available as soon as January.
  • A drug that could prevent COVID-19 infections might be here earlier than expected everything goes according to plan.
  • The infectious disease expert said that companies developing vaccines might start mass-producing them before finishing clinical trials in the hope that they receive regulatory approvals.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Dr. Anthony Fauci gave the world some good news earlier this week when he revealed the preliminary results of an extensive remdesivir study. The drug has proved to be effective against the novel coronavirus and can significantly reduce the recovery time for some COVID-19 patients. However, there is no evidence so far that suggests remdesivir can reduce the mortality rate of COVID-19. It can be speculated that the earlier you diagnose a patient and put him or her on a therapy that includes remdesivir, the less likely the chances that he or she might develop complications. But more research will be needed to see what happens if the drug is administered early enough.

Still, having remdesivir as a new standard therapy is precisely the kind of progress the world needs until vaccines are ready. And now, Fauci says that millions of COVID-19 vaccines might be ready much sooner than expected.
