  • The coronavirus pandemic is still spreading throughout the US, with the latest numbers from Johns Hopkins University showing that more than 1 million people in the US have now been infected by the virus.
  • Nevertheless, some companies and locales around the US are starting to plan incremental reopenings, including Simon Property Group. That’s the biggest mall owner in the US, and its properties also house Apple stores.
  • As early as this weekend, the first Simon malls and Apple stores may reopen in the US.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Simon Property Group is the biggest mall owner in the US and garnered a wave of news headlines on Tuesday for its plan to start reopening some of its malls around the country as soon as this weekend.

That’s according to an internal memo about the company’s internal reopening timetable, which was obtained by CNBC and encompasses 49 malls in 10 states. Those first malls would adhere to a limited schedule once they’ve opened back up, which the memo notes is planned to start on May 1 — but what’s also interesting is what this means for retailers that operate stores inside those mall properties, like Apple. Deidre O’Brien, the iPhone maker’s senior vice president of retail, has already told employees, according to one report, that many Apple Stores will start reopening in May, and if the Simon news is any guide, this is also an indication of which Apple Stores will be the first to open back up.

Fauci: US ‘could be in for a bad fall’ if coronavirus treatments don’t work

  • Dr. Anthony Fauci says America “could be in for a bad fall” if coronavirus treatments don’t work.
  • Several drugs and therapies are currently in clinical trials, with some of them showing promise against COVID-19. More research is required, however.
  • Many vaccines are also in the works, but they will not be ready for mass inoculation until next year.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The novel coronavirus has no treatment, but doctors around the world have been testing all sorts of drugs to kill the virus. It would be enough for just one to be effective against the virus to tide us over until a vaccine arrives. If a drug can stop the virus from replicating or reduce the immune response and the complications that arise from COVID-19, the disease would be much easier to manage, especially in severe cases.

However, the clinical trials aren’t done yet, and some have provided results that aren’t too reassuring. If researchers don’t find an effective treatment soon, the US “could be in for a bad fall,” according to Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Apple Maps now shows coronavirus testing locations in the US

  • Apple opened up a web portal for hospitals and labs to submit information about COVID-19 testing locations earlier this month.
  • On Tuesday, COVID-19 testing locations began appearing on Apple Maps in the US.
  • Some locations are providing COVID-19 diagnostic tests as well as antibody tests.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

There are countless hurdles we’ll need to overcome before we can expect life to return to normal, and one of them is testing as many people as we possibly can. The more people who are tested, the more data we have, and those who test positive can self-isolate to ensure that they don’t infect anyone else. And while we may never scale up to test as many Americans as we should be testing on a daily basis, the capacity has been expanding rapidly.

But despite the flood of testing in the US in recent days, knowing whether or not you should be tested and where you should go to get tested is still disappointingly nebulous, and will probably change depending on who you call. There is good news, though. As of Tuesday afternoon, COVID-19 testing locations are being displayed on Apple Maps, which should take some of the guesswork out of the operation for those who need to get tested.

  • Google is expected to launch a second-generation Chromecast Ultra in the coming weeks.
  • The device will feature a remote, support for Google Assistant, as well as Android TV support.
  • New listings on Taiwan’s NCC regulator seem to confirm both the new Ultra streaming player and the remote that will be sold alongside it.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The Chromecast media player is one of the best products launched in the past few years, and has certainly been a success for Google. The company has continued to improve the affordable device over the years, changing the design and releasing a more expensive version with added features. The Chromecast Ultra, however, wasn’t updated when Google released the third-gen Chromecast, and its due for an upgrade of its own.

We heard recently that the new Ultra will come with a few unusual features for a Chromecast, including built-in Android TV and remote control, and now there’s more evidence to back those rumors up.

Belgians told to eat fries twice a week to save the potato industry

  • Belgium food officials are begging citizens to eat fries at least twice a week in a bid to boost the failing potato industry.
  • Demand for potatoes has been waning as the coronavirus pandemic continues, and around 750,000 tons of potatoes are now expected to remain unprocessed.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

We’ve seen all of the most obvious results of the novel coronavirus pandemic, including lockdowns, social distancing, businesses closing, and people losing their jobs. As the crisis drags on, industries that you might never even think about are revealing that they’re struggling in the face of the pandemic, and for many different reasons.

In Belgium, the virus has not only impacted citizens, but also the country’s potato industry. In fact, things have gotten so bad that potato industry officials in the country are begging citizens to eat fries at least twice a week in the hopes of propping up demand for the vegetables which has been sharply declining in recent weeks.

Even Android fans can’t help but love the iPhone SE

  • Apple’s brand new iPhone SE is so powerful and affordable that Android enthusiasts have taken notice.
  • The iPhone SE is only $399 but can outperform pricier Android handsets thanks to Apple’s powerful A13 Bionic.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

When Apple released the original iPhone SE in March of 2016, Apple executives were famously caught off-guard by how popular the device proved to be. In a smartphone market that was increasingly churning out larger devices, the iPhone SE proved that many people would rather have a powerful device in a compact form factor.

Apple certainly took its sweet time rolling out a new version of the SE, but the company finally answered our prayers and released a brand new iPhone SE earlier this month. And though the new iPhone SE isn’t as compact as the original, it still offers users up a lot of bang for the buck.

JetBlue is the first US airline to require passengers to wear masks

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • JetBlue is the first airline in the United States to require passengers to wear masks on flights.
  • Delta, American, United, and others are now requiring flight attendants and other employees to wear masks while on duty, while passengers will be provided masks if they want them.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

No industry has been left untouched by the novel coronavirus pandemic, but airlines have been absolutely gutted. Earlier this month, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) revealed that it had screened fewer than 100,000 passengers over the course of a week, down from 2.1 million in the same week the year prior. That’s a 95% drop, and a troubling sign for the industry in the months to come, even once this crisis is over.

But even amidst all of the chaos, thousands of travelers are still walking in and out of airports every day, and at long last, airlines are putting policies in place to protect both their passengers and their own employees. CNBC reports that JetBlue will require all passengers to wear a face covering starting on May 4th. This matches the company’s policy for flight attendants, and is the first time such a restriction has been imposed on passengers as well.

UK doctors warn of unusual coronavirus symptoms in some children

  • UK doctors have issued an alert to colleagues about a series of severe symptoms that can appear in some children infected with the novel coronavirus.
  • Some children exhibited “multi-system inflammation” and flu-like symptoms that required intensive care.
  • Not all of the children were COVID-19 positive, but they exhibited signs indicative of toxic shock syndrome or atypical Kawasaki Disease, which affects the heart and blood vessels.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Children fare better than adults when dealing with the novel coronavirus, at least that’s what all the statistics say. But there’s always an exception to the rule, like the unexpected death of a newborn who tested COVID-19 positive, or of a teenager who had no preexisting conditions. That’s to say that while the fatality rate is significantly lower for children than adults, there’s no way to prevent complications at any age. Proving that point are UK doctors who have issued an urgent alert to their peers about children exhibiting unusual coronavirus symptoms that are part of a more severe COVID-19 reaction.

The weird reason your stimulus check might be delayed

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • If you’re among the millions of Americans wondering “Where’s my stimulus money?” right now, a new delay has been identified in the disbursement of IRS stimulus payments.
  • That money, which Congress appropriated in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic to help ease some of the financial strain on Americans, is apparently being routed first to bank accounts associated with tax preparation services, which use temporary bank accounts sometimes to get customers their refund anticipation loans.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

When I predicted at the outset of the Trump Administration’s stimulus check rollout that some Americans might not receive their checks until May at the earliest — despite insistence from US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin that the checks would go out in a matter of days — I got some pushback in comments saying the government was promising otherwise. With the end of April now at hand, it looks like that prediction was true, but for at least one reason no one could have foreseen:

Turns out, millions of payments have been held up, detoured into the wrong bank account, and otherwise delayed for the unfortunate reason that the checks’ intended recipients have low incomes.

Sony’s PS5 launch timing might’ve just leaked

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • PlayStation 5 games could be revealed by Sony in the coming weeks, according to a magazine.
  • Official PlayStation Magazine says that it will talk about “the latest games coming to PlayStation 5” in its next issue, which means that a PS5 event could be happening in May.
  • Sony hasn’t discussed the PS5 since the DualSense was revealed earlier this month.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Over the past month and a half, Sony has offered up two major updates concerning the PlayStation 5. The first came on March 18th, when lead system architect Mark Cerny hosted a deep dive into the technology that will power Sony’s console (without actually showing us the console itself). Then, on April 7th, the DualSense controller that will ship with the PS5 was unveiled, along with the unique features that will differentiate it from the DualShock 4.

Three weeks later, it’s been yet another stretch of radio silence from Sony, but thanks to the latest issue of the Official PlayStation Magazine (OPM), we might finally have a timeline for Sony’s next-gen plans. In the latest edition of OPM, which is now available digitally, the magazine claims that it will “reveal the latest games coming to PlayStation 5, and how they’ll play” in the July issue. Physical copies of the July issue go on sale on June 2nd, but digital copies will be available a few days earlier, implying that a big May event may be in the cards.
