Coronavirus can apparently live for days in your eye
- New findings from one of the earliest coronavirus patients in Italy suggest that traces of the virus can live in the eye for some 20 days.
- This reinforces the conventional wisdom, that one of the few methods of preventing the virus we have right now are the tried-and-true methods of washing your hands and avoiding touching your face.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
By now, it should be pretty widely known that washing your hands thoroughly and often, along with not touching your face, are some of the strongest tools in our arsenal right now in terms of limiting the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. But for those of you who still aren’t paying sufficient heed to those best practices, perhaps this will wake you up in a hurry — the fact that a coronavirus patient in Italy has been found to have the virus living in her eye long after it had left her nose.
That’s according to researchers writing about the case of the 65-year-old woman who was Italy’s first confirmed coronavirus case in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine. In this case, the woman was exhibiting signs of conjunctivitis after being admitted to a hospital in January. A few days later, an eye swab found traces of the virus, and for the duration of her stay she submitted to additional eye swabs which showed the virus replicating, implying that the traces from her eye could be contagious.

New idea to speed up coronavirus vaccine research is bold but dangerous
- Coronavirus vaccine research is advancing at a fast pace, but that might not be enough for some lawmakers and scientists.
- There’s increasing support for a different type of COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial, one that involves purposely infecting young, healthy volunteers with the novel virus after vaccine inoculations.
- Challenge trials are risky for diseases that have no cure like COVID-19, as there’s no guarantee the young patients will survive the infection.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
A vaccine for the novel coronavirus will be the kind of drug that can help eradicate the virus for good. A vaccine would prevent infection and the more people get it, the less likely it is for the virus to spread. The good news is that some 77 vaccines are already in testing, including six that have reached at least phase I of human trials. Also good is the fact that the virus isn’t showing significant mutations that would hinder vaccine efficacy. However, the first COVID-19 vaccines won’t be ready for mass inoculations for up to 18 months. Some of them could be deployed as soon as this fall, but only specific categories of patients will be allowed to get one, including healthcare workers who constantly exposed to the virus.
The vaccines can’t come sooner than that because authorities need to make sure they’re safe, not just effective against the vaccine. The last thing we need to treat COVID-19 is a vaccine that can cause unexpected side-effects. You’d never hear the end of it from anti-vaxxers, not to mention that such an event might delay other vaccine work. But there is an idea to speed up coronavirus research that’s both bold and dangerous.

A couple sailing the Atlantic had no idea coronavirus brought the world to a standstill
- A couple sailing the Atlantic had no clue the coronavirus pandemic was sweeping the globe.
- It wasn’t until the couple tried to dock at an island and were turned away that they realized something was up.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
I remember a few years ago I came up with what I thought was an original premise for a TV show or a movie. As I imagined it, a full-on nuclear world war breaks out and decimates the planet. Meanwhile, airplanes that happened to be in the air at the time ultimately land and the passengers find themselves returning to a world that is not the same as they left it. But as it turns out, there was already a Stephen King book that essentially covered that exact same plot.
What’s wild, though, is that the storyline above — in a general sense — actually played out recently in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. As initially reported by the BBC, a couple from the UK were busy sailing across the Atlantic over the past few weeks and were completely oblivious to what was happening across the world.

88 million stimulus checks have gone out so far – see how much your state has gotten
- At this point, millions of Americans have started receiving their IRS stimulus payments as the coronavirus pandemic continues to exact a catastrophic economic toll on the US.
- Many more millions of Americans, however, are still waiting and constantly checking the IRS website for their stimulus check status. If you’re among those wondering ‘where’s my stimulus money,’ a new update from the IRS provides insight into how much cash it’s distributed so far – and how much is left to come.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
As of Friday, April 24, the IRS has issued 88.1 million stimulus checks to taxpayers, with the average check amount totaling $1,791.
That’s according to new data released from the tax agency, which came the same week that the IRS began issuing paper checks via the mail after a few weeks of sending out stimulus payments electronically, via direct deposit. The data also reflects that the IRS has paid out more than $157 billion so far as a direct disbursement to Americans, which generally comes in the form of up to $1,200 to individuals and $2,400 to married couples (that $1,791 average above also includes the fact that parents can get an extra $500 per child, and individuals and married couples above a certain income threshold can still qualify for an amount below the max amount).

Now, wouldn’t you know it, an asteroid is about to make a flyby of Earth next week and, well, it kinda looks like it’s wearing a face mask of its own. Do mosquitos transmit coronavirus?
- Mosquitos are known to carry a variety of microorganisms capable of causing disease, but is coronavirus one of them?
- At the moment, the CDC and the World Health Organization don’t believe mosquitoes pose a threat.
- The novel coronavirus is transmitted primarily through the air, and there are no known cases of mosquito-borne coronavirus infections at this time.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
The novel coronavirus pandemic is still an incredibly serious problem for, well, just about every country on the planet. Even areas where new cases are beginning to wane, the risk of a new wave of outbreaks remains present. With that in mind, and as we inch toward warmer summer months, it’s worth considering whether mosquitos are capable of carrying and transmitting the virus from one person to another.
Elizabeth McGraw, Director of the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics and professor at Penn State University, tackles that question in a new video where she explains the likelihood of COVID-19 being carried by mosquitos.
