Apple admits there’s a new iPhone security flaw, but says it wasn’t exploited

  • Apple says a newly found set of vulnerabilities that affect the Mail app on iPhone and iPad were not used by attackers.
  • The company who discovered the security issues said it had evidence of attackers exploiting the flaws on unspecified targets.
  • A fix for the Mail app will be available soon to all iPhone and iPad users, as Apple has already patched the vulnerabilities.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Reports earlier this week said cybersecurity company ZecOps discovered two zero-day security exploits that can affect the default Mail preloaded on iPhone and iPad. One of the flaws would allow remote code execution, while the other could infect the iOS device by sending emails to an iPhone or iPad users. An attacker would be able to combine these attacks to access a user’s emails. Reports also said that Apple had patched the vulnerabilities in the latest iOS 13.4.5 beta version, and the fixes would be rolled out to all users in the coming weeks.

While ZecOps recommends the use of a third-party app like Gmail until the update arrives, and claims that the vulnerabilities have been used on actual targets, Apple says it found no evidence that the iPhone Mail flaws were exploited.

Massive, ancient galaxies have been swallowing their neighbors for billions of years

  • Astronomers discovered that old, massive galaxies tend to be messy and disorderly, and set out to explain why.
  • Computer simulations revealed that large ancient galaxies have likely been swallowing up their smaller neighbors for billions of years.
  • This case of “cosmic munchies” results in unpredictable movement and a messy appearance.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Thanks to high-powered telescopes, astronomers can peer into space and see distant galaxies of all shapes and sizes. Over the years, observations of many different galaxies have revealed some interesting trends, and explaining why those trends exist can teach us a lot about how our universe has evolved over billions of years.

In a new paper published in The Astrophysical Journal, researchers tackle an issue they often see in particularly large, old galaxies. Massive ancient galaxies have a habit of looking a bit messy from afar. Movement within them tends to be unpredictable. The researchers now believe they have an explanation.

Most Americans say they already need stimulus check #2

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The IRS has only recently begun sending out long-awaited stimulus direct deposit payments to Americans as part of the economic package Congress passed in March in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
  • While everyone is keeping an eye on the IRS’ stimulus check status tracker, however, it’s starting to become clear that the money everyone is waiting on now may not even be enough. In fact, most Americans say they’re having such a tough time that they already need a second round of stimulus checks.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

When Congress passed and President Trump subsequently signed into law the $2.2 stimulus legislation at the end of March that was meant to blunt some of the economic pain stemming from the coronavirus pandemic — and which provides for direct payments to most Americans, among other things — official Washington patted itself on the back for a job well done. They had moved fast and in dramatic fashion to get money out the door and into the hands of people who need it most, and who need it right now.

Only, things aren’t exactly working out that way. Not completely. If you haven’t gotten your stimulus payment from the IRS yet, perhaps because you’re waiting on a paper check to come in the mail as opposed to people who’ve already received theirs electronically via direct deposit — there’s some bad news. Check out this timeline from the Ways and Means Committee in the US House of Representatives: It says that paper checks started to be put into the mail this week, and they’ll be issued at the rate of about 5 million a week, which could end up taking about 20 weeks to get all of them sent out. Meaning, if you’re one of the unlucky ones near the back of the back, you might not get your paper stimulus check until September. And so, because of that delay, as well as the fact that many Americans don’t even think the checks themselves represent a big enough chunk of change (up to $1,200 for individuals, and $2,400 for married couples), many Americans now say they could probably go ahead and do with a second stimulus check at this point.

Wendy’s is giving away free food around the country on Friday

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the dining rooms of restaurants around the country, by and large, remain closed right now as states and cities encourage social distancing. Those eateries can still offer takeout and food delivery options, however.
  • With that in mind, Wendy’s is launching a free food deal on Friday, April 24, to help spread a little bit of good cheer at this stressful and depressing time: Free chicken nuggets for everyone who comes through the drive-thru, no purchase required.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The Wendy’s fast-food chain is launching a promotion on Friday, April 24, that springs from its belief that there’s never a bad day, really, to launch a free food deal — and that everyone could really use a group hug right now, given the state of the world.

Instead of a group hug, though, Wendy’s has decided to offer everyone around the country (apologies for the bad pun) “groupnugs” (their word, not mine). Nationwide, Wendy’s will be giving away a free 4-piece order of Chicken Nuggets, either crispy or spicy, to every car that comes through its drive-thrus, with no purchase necessary. Digital food delivery orders don’t count, though — you actually have to come through the drive-thru yourself for this offer, since the dining room at Wendy’s and pretty much every kind of eatery is temporarily shut down right now.

10 movies and shows to watch on Netflix before they leave in May

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Netflix is losing 33 movies and shows from its streaming service in May 2020.
  • Every season of Scandal and Royal Pains will be missing from Netflix by the end of the month.
  • Netflix is also losing a few blockbuster movies, such as Limitless and the Austin Powers trilogy.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

These always end up going one of two ways. Either there’s so much quality content being removed from Netflix that I struggle to whittle down my list to just ten movies and TV shows, or there is so little leaving that I struggle to come up with even ten movies or shows worth recommending. The month of May falls under the latter scenario, as there isn’t much notable content departing from the streaming service in the coming weeks.

Unfortunately, even when the selection is a bit thin, there are always still a few tough losses, and I know there will be plenty of people who are sad to see all seven seasons of Shoda Rhimes’s Scandal vanish from Netflix. Starring Kerry Washington as Olivia Pope, the series aired on ABC from 2012 to 2018, winning multiple awards in its early seasons, including two Emmys. And speaking of popular, long-running shows, USA Network procedural dramedy Royal Pains is ending its tenure on Netflix too, taking all 104 episodes along with it.

Coronavirus survivors keep retesting positive, and we don’t know why

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Coronavirus survivors keep testing positive after recovery, puzzling physicians.
  • Some patients have retested positive 70 days after the original infections, and doctors are struggling to find an explanation or a cure.
  • It’s unclear whether they’re contagious or whether they’ve been infected a second time. Some are showing symptoms, while others aren’t.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

An increasing number of reports indicate that some novel coronavirus survivors can test positive again several days after being discharged from hospitals. Some of them have been showing mild symptoms in Korea, but authorities can’t explain what’s actually happening. We’ve seen such reports from China over the past few weeks, with patients having been isolated for a second time upon retesting positive.

It turns out that some people can carry the virus for months after being declared cured, according to a new report. Authorities are scrambling to understand whether a patient who keeps testing positive after recovery is infectious to others, and some are considering new discharge protocols as a result.

  • NASA and the USGS partnered up to create the most detailed map of the Moon ever.
  • The map, which is available online, color-codes craters and other geographical features, showing all of the tiny features that make up the lunar surface.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

When we gaze up at Earth’s moon in the night sky we can see it’s covered in a pattern that’s become familiar to all of us. Because the Moon is tidally locked to our planet, we only see one of its faces, and that face, with all its shadowy splotches and bright areas, is iconic.

Now, in an incredible first, NASA and the USGS have teamed up to produce a Moon map unlike any other. It shows us exactly where all those dark and light areas came from, and serves as a visual catalog of the many impacts Earth’s tiny neighbor has endured over the years.

Everyone’s Wi-Fi is about to dramatically improve

  • Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, as millions of people around the country are now staying home and doing their jobs remotely in addition to consuming more news and entertainment from home, a solid, reliable internet connection has been regarded as more paramount than ever.
  • The FCC has voted on new rules that will support faster, more reliable Wi-Fi service for most of us by clearing a path in support of the next generation of Wi-Fi, which is known as Wi-Fi 6.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

At a time when more Americans than ever are working from home and relying on fast, stable internet connectivity for the jobs, as well as to consume news and entertainment, an FCC vote Thursday amounts to the biggest change in Wi-Fi since the late 1980s.

Specifically, the agency voted on rules to make 1,200 megahertz of spectrum in the 6GHz band available for unlicensed use — rules that now usher in the adoption of Wi-Fi 6 to support the next generation of W-Fi in the latest mobile devices as well as within the internet of Things. According to the agency, Wi-Fi 6 will be more than 2.5x faster than the current Wi-Fi standard and increases the amount of spectrum by almost a factor of five which should also help improve connectivity in rural areas.

Xbox Series X can load ‘Gears 5’ four times faster than Xbox One

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Xbox Series X can load Gears 5 four times faster than the Xbox One, says developer.
  • This was achieved without making any code changes, which implies that the Xbox Series X will be able to load games even faster when developers start optimizing their games for the next-gen console.
  • Xbox head Phil Spencer says next-gen games will finally be revealed soon.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Microsoft spent the first half of March sharing details about the Xbox Series X we’d been waiting months for, but in the weeks since, the company has gone dark. Other than the surreptitious reveal of the console’s logo on Wednesday, we haven’t learned much more about the next Xbox lately, but recent interviews conducted by Windows Central provide some interesting context about the features that Microsoft announced last month.

The whole piece is worth a read, but we’re going to focus on the interview with The Coalition’s technical director Mike Rayner, who was on the team that made Gears 5 for Xbox One and PC. We keep hearing about how the addition of a solid-state drive (SSD) will be one of the biggest technological leaps of the next generation, but Rayner helps explain just how much of a difference the new technology makes on a game like Gears 5.
