NASA’s new rover is headed to the perfect spot to hunt for life on Mars
- NASA’s Perseverance rover has a great chance of finding evidence of life on Mars.
- The rover’s landing site, the Jezero crater, likely preserved signs of life if any existed on the surface of the planet.
- The Mars 2020 mission is still scheduled to launch in late July or early August 2020.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
NASA’s Mars 2020 mission launch date is rapidly approaching, and we’ve seen all the signs that the Perseverance rover is just about ready to make the long journey to the Red Planet. What will it find when it arrives? That’s a question nobody can answer, but new research by scientists at Stanford suggests that the rover’s targeted landing site may be a great place to look for signs of life.
NASA chose the rover’s landing location — a large bowl-shaped depression known as the Jezero crater — because it’s located in an area where ancient martian rivers flowed, carving channels and depositing sediment into layers. This is ideal for scientists hunting for signatures of life as it offers the opportunity to study material that was on the surface over a long period of time.

New York coronavirus antibody study shows just how far the virus has spread
- New York tested 3,000 people to see if they had the antibodies that indicate they have been infected with the coronavirus and have since recovered.
- Over 13% of New Yorkers tested positive, which means up to 2.7 million people in the state of New York may have already had COVID-19.
- The numbers are highest in NYC, where 21.2% tested positive.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Like many other mayors, governors, and elected officials, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has held briefings on a daily basis to offer updates on the state’s coronavirus pandemic response. Not long ago, he announced that New York would be conducting a study in order to determine how many people in the state have been infected, which cannot be determined with the data the state has collected so far. Many people who contract the virus recover at home. Some never show any symptoms at all, and likely don’t know they were infected in the first place.
With that in mind, New York started testing people out and about across the entire state, in grocery stores and other locations that are still open during the shutdown, to see if they tested positive for a blood marker that would indicate they had been infected. Over 3,000 of these tests were conducted in 19 counties and 40 localities, and of everyone who received the test, 13.9% had the antibodies that show they recovered from COVID-19.

Scary new estimates show what will happen if we stop social distancing in May
- As state and local public officials and health experts, along with the Trump administration at the federal level, work through the details of how they’ll go about reopening the country in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, a new model shows what the effect will be of relaxing social distancing guidelines around the country starting in May.
- From the PolicyLab at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, this tool shows what will happen at the county level around the country if social distancing guidelines are relaxed 50% starting May 15 (hint: it’s not good).
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
One of the hardest decisions to make in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak for states and cities around the country was the decision to effectively put themselves into an economic coma for an indefinite period of time — forcing people to mostly stay at home, except for trips to essential businesses like banks and grocery stores or to pick up food-to-go. With a snap of the fingers, in the form of orders from mayors and governors, ordinary life ground to a halt around the country, in a way that most Americans probably never could have conceived of being a possibility, let alone actually coming to pass.
But after several weeks of this, and more than a month of closures and lockdowns in many parts of the country, we’re now at a new and perhaps even more dangerous phase of the country’s response to the coronavirus. We’re starting to see the states and cities that want to be at the vanguard of opening back up again, amid protests that this whole thing is taking too long and warnings from public health experts that we’re not actually out of the woods yet and that reopening now is too dangerous. Along those lines, there’s a web tool built by the team at the PolicyLab at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia which makes the math as plain as it can be for you — you can check here to get an estimate of what will happen in your area if leaders start relaxing social distancing guidelines in May, as has been proposed in a growing number of places around the US.

Elon Musk reveals when Starlink internet service will go live
- SpaceX’s Starlink broadband service will begin private beta testing in around 3 months, with a public beta opening in around 6 months.
- Elon Musk revealed this tentative timeline in a tweet after the Wednesday launch of 60 new Starlink satellites.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
On Wednesday afternoon, SpaceX sent one of its Falcon 9 rockets into space. It was carrying 60 shiny new satellites that will eventually become part of the company’s Starlink communications network. SpaceX has been launching the pint-sized satellites into space for months already, with over 400 of them now in orbit around Earth.
The long-term plan is for Starlink to serve high-speed data to just about every corner of the globe, but with an estimated 40,000 satellites needed to fulfill the company’s most grand ambitions, it was unclear exactly how long it would take before the system was up and running in any capacity. Thanks to some tweets by SpaceX boss Elon Musk, now we know.

Did a pharma company really triple the price of a drug capable of battling the coronavirus?
- A pharmaceutical company this month tripled the price of an HIV drug that could be used to help treat coronavirus symptoms.
- The company claims that the price increase was decided upon months before the coronavirus pandemic began.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
There’s a story making the rounds suggesting that Jaguar Health, a San Francisco-based pharmaceutical company, recently raised the price of one of its drugs by an exorbitant amount after learning it might be used to help treat coronavirus symptoms. As reported by Axios, Jaguar more than tripled the price of Mytesi, an FDA-approved drug that was initially designed to provided relief for HIV patients suffering from non-infectious diarrhea.
While Mytesi typically costs about $668, Jaguar boosted the price to $2,206 earlier this month. In March, Jaguar filed a FORM 8-K with the SEC and disclosed that it asked the FDA for approval to use Mytesi “for the symptomatic relief of diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with COVID-19 and for patients with COVID-19 who have diarrhea associated with certain antiviral treatments.”

Mind-boggling study says smoking might prevent coronavirus infections
- Doctors in France think that smoking can be both good and bad for people who are at risk of contracting the novel coronavirus infection.
- Smoking is a risk factor for COVID-19 patients, but one particular substance in cigarettes — nicotine — might prevent infection in some people, or improve COVID-19 prognosis.
- The French doctors will use patches in a clinical study to see if nicotine might prevent coronavirus infections and help existing patients.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Smoking is terrible for you, as any physician on the planet will tell you. Smoking is a risk factor for various medical conditions and can worsen the outcome for COVID-19 patients. Smoking regular cigarettes is bad for patients who contract the novel coronavirus, as is smoking weed. That’s because the lungs are where the primary battle between the virus and the immune system takes place. COVID-19 complications include shortness of breath and some people end up requiring oxygen therapy and ventilators. But it turns out that smoking may have a beneficial side effect: it might actually help prevent a novel coronavirus infection altogether. That doesn’t mean you should take up smoking, but a substance in cigarettes could prevent some people from getting the new disease, and French doctors now want to test nicotine patches against COVID-19.

Where’s my stimulus check? A new reason your money might be delayed
- Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Congress passed a massive, $2.2 trillion stimulus package at the end of March that included money for direct stimulus payments of up to $1,200 for individuals (or $2,400 for married couples) for most Americans.
- If you’ve been trying to figure out where your stimulus payment is and checking the IRS’ stimulus check status tracker regularly, there’s a new reason to be aware of that might account for why your payment has been delayed.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
Even though the IRS has started sending out the first wave of stimulus checks to Americans as part of the $2.2 trillion legislation Congress passed at the end of March to address the economic pain caused by the coronavirus pandemic, millions of Americans are still waiting to receive their money.
There are all sorts of reasons why you might still be waiting on your stimulus check, from the IRS not having your direct deposit information on file (in which case you’ll have to wait for a paper check to arrive through the mail, which will take longer) to filing your taxes late, in which case the IRS wouldn’t have all the information it needs to determine your eligibility in a timely manner. The vast majority of Americans are eligible to get something as a result of this emergency stimulus action, though, which provides for up to $1,200 for individuals and $2,400 for married couples (with an extra $500 for each child under the age of 17). You can also check the status of your stimulus payment via a stimulus check tracker the IRS set up. However, a new report has identified another possible reason to be aware of that explains why you might be waiting on your stimulus money a little longer.

Doctors have found a horrible new coronavirus complication
- High blood sugar levels may lead to coronavirus complications, as sugar mediates the link between the novel virus and cell receptors.
- A new study says that blood sugar may increase even in patients who aren’t known to be diabetics as a result of the COVID-19 infection.
- The research says that hydroxychloroquine could be used to block processes that add sugars to protein, and thus improve the condition of COVID-19 patients.
- Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.
For a substance that tastes so good, sugar is one of the things around you that can put your life in danger. It’s a risk factor for a number of diseases, and it turns out that COVID-19 can be added to that list. New research says the more sugar you consume, the worse your novel coronavirus case might be. And that doesn’t go just for patients who already suffer from diabetes, a condition that has previously associated with COVID-19 complications. High sugar intake might be of concern in non-diabetics who are infected with the new coronavirus. And the study proposes as a fix for the sugar problem a controversial coronavirus drug you’ve heard of everywhere on TV. The anti-malarial hydroxychloroquine might play a role in reducing sugar concentration in some key areas and thus improve the prognosis of certain patients.
