It was probably only fitting this past weekend that for the first Saturday Night Live show to air since the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic temporarily suspended production back in March, that Tom Hanks would be asked to come on board as the comforting, reassuring host audiences needed right now.

That’s because he and his wife Rita Wilson were among the first celebrities to announce they’d tested positive for the virus, which they contracted while in Australia where Hanks was filming a role in director Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming Elvis Presley biopic. “Ever since being diagnosed,” Hanks joked during his monologue (which you can watch here), “I have been more like America’s dad than ever before. Since no one wants to be around me very long and I make people uncomfortable.” Along those same lines, as anyone who follows Hanks on social media can attest, he’s certainly dealt with the virus with a healthy dose of humor and good cheer, although his wife Rita Wilson has given a new interview in which she details the harsh physical toll the virus took on the couple — for which she also said she was administered chloroquine, the drug that President Trump has consistently touted as a “game-changer.”

A new COVID-19 study that revealed the loss of smell and taste during is a likely symptom of the novel coronavirus infection also found evidence that says a sore throat isn’t necessarily associated with the disease.
Researchers at UC San Diego Health found that patients who included a sore throat among their symptoms were more likely to be COVID-19-negative.

A new study that tried to determine whether one of the strangest novel coronavirus symptoms is statistically relevant for screening found that people who experience the loss of smell and taste are more likely to be COVID-19 positive than to have a different illness. The sensory impairment has been associated with COVID-19 in various countries, with physicians observing the symptom in many of their patients. Researchers looked at the olfactory tissue and determined that the SARS-CoV-2 virus can attach itself to specific cells just as quickly as it binds to lung cells.

The researchers from UC San Diego Health also determined that patients who recover from COVID-19 will get their senses of smell and taste back anywhere between two and four weeks following the infection. But they also made another startling discovery about one of the symptoms you might associate with COVID-19: A sore throat doesn’t always point to a COVID-19 infection.

The novel coronavirus pandemic has changed our lives in unexpected and dramatic ways. Social distancing and stay-at-home orders are new to all of us, and adjusting to this new (hopefully temporary) way of life can be difficult. Amazon recently shifted most of its attention away from nonessential products so that it can free up as much capacity as possible to deliver medical supplies to hospitals and local governments. After spending 17 years underground, the bugs will crawl up, perch on trees, and transition to winged adults.

In many places around the United States, summer just wouldn’t be the same without the occasional hum of a cicada buzzing off the in the distance. The noisy insects are either a harmless curiosity or a total nuisance depending on what area of the country you live in and the specific species of cicada that reside there. Folks in Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia will see far more of the bugs than usual in 2020.

Species of periodical cicadas maintain long brood cycles, only emerging every 13 or 17 years. There are over a dozen of these types of cicada broods, and Brood IX hasn’t been seen since 2003. That means it’s going to be a very noisy summer for the counties where the bugs are destined to appear.

It’s bad and getting worse, but we also have to remember that life goes on and we have more than just the coronavirus to protect ourselves and our families from.

Amazon has two great deals right now on home security cameras that are just as good as a $200 Nest Cam for a tiny fraction of the price. The second one is on the Yi Home Camera 3, which costs about the same amount but has some more advanced features as well as a 6-month free trial of YI’s cloud service. Heart rate monitoring is of course still a central feature of the Apple Watch, but the Series 5 also adds a built-in ECG app that’s unlike anything that has come before it thanks to electrical and optical heart sensors. It can call emergency services if you fall and warn you about an irregular heart rate, and so much more. Heck, it’s even “swimproof” so you can wear it in the pool or shower and not have to worry about it getting damaged.

Needless to say, all that comes with a fairly steep price tag that can reach well over $1,000 depending on the model you choose. The status of your coronavirus stimulus payment will be updated no more than once a day.
