HyperCam isn’t the first hyperspectral camera the world has ever seen, but it could mark the first one that will become widely available at a surprisingly affordable price point. But let’s first take a step back for a moment; what on Earth is a hyperspectral camera? When a standard camera snaps a photograph, it captures the same light spectrum that is visible to the naked eye. As a result, the image captured looks just as it would if the viewer were looking at the subject in person, give or take. The visible spectrum is only a small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, however, and hyperspectral cameras are able to capture near-infrared light that gives us a peek at things the human eye is incapable of seeing.
Now, a team of researchers may have found a way to take this exciting but remarkably expensive camera technology and make it available to the masses for the first time ever.

If you think the image above looks frightening, you’re right. The crazy contraption pictured in the image is the first portable railgun, a futuristic projectile launcher associated most commonly with the military or NASA. The man in the image above isn’t in the military, and he’s not a NASA engineer. Instead, he’s a civilian who used some engineering smarts, some widely available parts and a 3D printer to create a functioning weapon that can fire graphite, aluminum, tungsten and even plasma projectiles at speeds of more than 560 mph.
And then there’s the best part: There are videos of this homemade railgun in action.

An app released earlier this year called Popcorn Time caused quite a stir. Whereas downloading stolen movies with torrent applications had previously been something that “mainstream” users stayed away from, this “Netflix for pirates” app made stealing copyrighted movies and TV shows as easy as streaming a video on Netflix. The app provided a beautiful interface that rethought the multi-step, multi-app torrenting process and combined everything into one simple app.
Thanks to a new project spawned by Popcorn Time, the process has been further simplified and you don’t even need to install an app anymore.

I can distinctly remember a time when having a cellphone was not just anomaly, but something that elicited snide comments from people who couldn’t possibly fathom why anyone would need to be connected 24/7. During my freshman year of college, for instance, I remember a roommate with a cellphone being asked, on account of his fancy new toy, if he was a drug dealer. After all, what else in the world could possibly explain why an 18-year old might need a cellphone?
