  • New coronavirus strains have been identified in pangolins smuggled into China, researchers report in Nature.
  • The smuggled animals, called pangolins, may have helped to pass the novel coronavirus to humans, though additional evidence will be needed to determine that.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

New versions of coronavirus have been identified in illegal shipments of pangolins heading to China. Pangolins, which are small mammals similar to anteaters, are often smuggled into China and have been known to carry strains of coronavirus. At present, it remains unclear where the novel coronavirus originated, but identifying new strains could help scientists trace its lineage.

The coronavirus pandemic engulfing the planet right now is far from the first coronavirus identified by scientists. We’ve known about coronaviruses for some time, but most of them don’t produce serious symptoms and are generally not a major threat. That changed with SARS, which proved to be a much more dangerous variant.

Fascinating video shows exactly how the coronavirus kills you

%name Fascinating video shows exactly how the coronavirus kills you by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • A new video shows exactly how the novel coronavirus attacks the lungs in people infected with COVID-19, and how it can eventually kill the host.
  • 3D CT imagery usually used ahead of cancer surgeries has been applied to study lung inflammation in COVID-19 patients.
  • This video is the closest look we’ve had so far at the coronavirus symptoms, and it is helping doctors better understand why the infection could lead to life-threatening respiratory failure.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

More than 500,000 people were infected with novel coronavirus just a few short days ago, and we’re now at almost 615,000 cases. At the time of this writing, the US has the most cases with 104,000 COVID-19 infections, while Italy has the most fatalities at over 9,100 deaths. The novel coronavirus may start with symptoms like the flu, but it’s a lot more contagious and a lot more dangerous. The only way to slow the spread of the disease is through strict social distancing and hygiene. By staying indoors and washing hands and surfaces often, you’re buying the healthcare system the time to come up with effective COVID-19 therapies and to work on vaccine development. Because out there, nobody is safe and SARS-CoV-2 can jump with ease from person to person. Once inside the body, there are some telltale early symptoms to look out for, but they don’t always present themselves. Or you may be asymptomatic yet still be able to infect others.

Most people will survive the pandemic, but the elderly and those with preexisting medical problems will have a tough time fighting for their lives. And then there will be heartbreaking exceptions to these rules, including people who are otherwise in perfect health, as well as teens and young adults who should have had the best chance of recovery. The video below shows exactly how the virus kills a person once it has nested in the lungs.

Students are graduating early from med school to fight the coronavirus

%name Students are graduating early from med school to fight the coronavirus by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Public officials and health experts have been increasingly referring to the fight against the COVID-19 coronavirus in terms of fighting a war.
  • Heading to the front lines soon are members of a new generation of medical students-turned-doctors, some of whom are being allowed to graduate early so they can go ahead and get into the fight against the virus.
  • New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has pushed to get more doctors into the health care system quicker to aid in this fight, and early graduation is one way of doing that.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The fight against the novel coronavirus outbreak that’s still pummeling the US, as well as the rest of the world, has been likened repeatedly to a war. And while this one doesn’t have the equivalent of a military draft, we are starting to see new measures taken to send what amount to fresh recruits to the front lines — via efforts like one in New York state that would allow medical students to graduate early to join this fight.

On Wednesday, NYU’s Grossman School of Medicine tweeted that this will, in fact, be happening very soon: “Excited to share that pending approval from @NYSEDNews and #LCME, @NYUGrossman will allow select medical students to graduate early to get more physicians into the health system more quickly, as we fight the growing spread of #COVID19 #allhandsondeck #NYULangoneHeroes”.

Last chance to get these welcome bonuses on Delta’s SkyMiles credit cards

%name Last chance to get these welcome bonuses on Delta’s SkyMiles credit cards by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The novel coronavirus outbreak has all but shut down the travel industry, with things so bad at the moment for airlines that the TSA says passenger traffic is down 90%.
  • Nevertheless, things won’t be like this forever. Delta is currently running some great welcome bonuses for its SkyMiles credit cards, so if you don’t mind perusing credit card offers now, it will pay off down the line once travel opens back up again.

Please note: the offers mentioned below are subject to change at any time and some may no longer be available.

So many industries are in a strange kind of state of suspended animation right, as we all try and make our way to whatever the other side of the novel coronavirus outbreak looks like. Travel and hospitality are among the especially hard-hit industries right now, because every day spent hunkering down at a home in a city under quarantine or a shelter-in-place order because of the virus is a day not spent booking a hotel room or flying the friendly skies.

But even though a perk like free award travel is not exactly a top priority at the present moment, there are still steps you can take now to ensure you’re in a great place to travel once it’s safe to do so. One of those steps is choosing the best credit cards to keep in your wallet and create a credit card strategy that earns you extra miles through welcome bonuses and spending categories.

SpaceX parachute snafu won’t delay Crew Dragon launch

%name SpaceX parachute snafu won’t delay Crew Dragon launch by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • NASA appears to indicate that its planned launch of a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule to the International Space Station is still on track for a launch by the end of May.
  • An issue during testing of the Crew Dragon parachute design resulted in the destruction of the test hardware, but SpaceX maintains that the problem was not related to the parachutes.
  • The launch will see a pair of NASA astronauts fly aboard SpaceX hardware for the first time ever.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

SpaceX’s upcoming test flight of its Crew Dragon spacecraft will be the first-ever crewed mission using the company’s hardware. It’s a very big deal for both SpaceX and NASA, which recruited SpaceX as part of its Commercial Crew program alongside competitor Boeing. Recently, NASA suggested that it would be ready to launch the first two astronauts on a Crew Dragon ship as early as May, but a recent parachute test threw that timeline into jeopardy.

As was reported yesterday, the test didn’t exactly go as either SpaceX or NASA would have liked. While hauling a dummy object into the air to test the Crew Dragon parachute system that had been installed on it, the helicopter being used for the test became unstable and the object had to be released. It was destroyed on impact with the ground, but nobody was harmed.

PlayStation download speeds now being slowed down in the US

%name PlayStation download speeds now being slowed down in the US by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • PlayStation download speeds have been slowed and delayed in Europe in order to reduce the strain on service providers in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Sony announced this week that those slowdowns are coming to the US as well.
  • YouTube, Netflix, Amazon, and others have reduced the quality of their video streams.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

One of the unforeseen consequences of a global pandemic in the 21st century is that everyone is suddenly going to be working at home, putting a strain on internet service providers that never planned for such a catastrophe. In order to help relieve some of that strain, many services, including YouTube, Netflix, and Amazon, have reduced the quality of their default video streams. Sony joined in as well earlier this week by slowing and delaying game downloads on PlayStation in Europe, and now the same measures are coming to the United States.

NASA’s Perseverance rover now has 10.9 million names on it

  • NASA just added over 10 million names to the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover.
  • The names were collected as part of NASA’s “Send Your Name to Mars” campaign which asked the public to send in their names to be part of the mission.
  • The names are etched into three small chips that are attached to the exterior of the rover.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

NASA is rapidly approaching the planned launch date of its Mars 2020 mission. It’s been a long time coming, and it’s one of the space agency’s most ambitious adventures to date. The shiny new Perseverance rover will play the starring role, exploring the planet and taking samples of the surface for study. As it’s done in the past, NASA offered the general public their own way to contribute by including their names on the rover itself.

The “Send Your Name to Mars” project asked science fans from all over the globe to submit their names. Those names were then etched into tiny chips that were just recently affixed to the rover. The three chips are seen in the image above, secured behind a transparent plate.

Leaked screenshots reveal what Apple’s new CarKey feature is going to look like

%name Leaked screenshots reveal what Apple’s new CarKey feature is going to look like by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • A new iOS feature called CarKey will allow iPhone and Apple Watch owners to unlock and drive their cars by relying upon their devices as opposed to a physical key.
  • Owners will be able to grant third-party individuals one-time keys that would enable them to unlock a car directly from their own device.
  • Evidence of CarKey first surfaced in an iOS 13.4 beta, though Apple may wait to release the feature until it unveils iOS 14 later this year.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

When Apple released the first iOS 13.4 beta in early February, one of the more notable additions was a brand new CarKey API that makes it possible for Apple Watch and iPhone owners to start, lock, and unlock their vehicles directly from their devices.

Even cooler is that the API will allow device owners to share access with friends and family members via one-time keys. Imagine, for instance, the ability to remotely give a friend of yours the ability to unlock and drive your car with their own iPhone or Apple Watch.

Samsung may have accidentally leaked a new, all-screen phone

%name Samsung may have accidentally leaked a new, all screen phone by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Samsung released the Galaxy S20 series in March and is expected to launch the Galaxy Note 20 this summer.
  • Leaks and rumors have suggested that the Galaxy Note 20 will feature a similar design to that of the Galaxy S20, but a new ad from Samsung shows off a phone with no notch or punch-hole.
  • This Samsung mystery phone might be nothing, but it’s an intriguing concept nonetheless.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Providing Samsung sticks to the same release schedule for its flagship phone launches this year as it did in 2019, the Galaxy Note 20 should be officially confirmed in August. Of course, the new coronavirus pandemic may have an effect on that date, but based on multiple reports from other companies that were once concerned about their supply chains being disrupted, it seems like most notable 2020 hardware launches are still on track.

In fact, we might have gotten an early look at the Note 20 thanks to LetsGoDigital and YouTuber Concept Creator just days ago, as the two teamed up to put together renders that reflect what previous rumors and reports have suggested the phone might look like. As expected, it’s not much of a departure from the Galaxy S20, at least in terms of design, but Samsung might have leaked an even more exciting phone in an ad for an air conditioner, of all things.
