A couple of weeks ago, iPhone owners the world over started receiving odd text messages from their mischievous friends — texts which promptly shut down their devices. This bizarre bug had something to do with how banner notifications process Unicode text, which is what appears in the odd string of text.
Apple provided a workaround shortly after the bug was reported, but today we found out that the official fix has been included in iOS 8.4 beta 4.

This has been a pretty good week, all things considered. Apple unveiled a new music streaming service, dozens of game developers started discussing their plans for E3 2015 and Chris Heston threw a no-hitter against the Mets… but inevitably, something had to come along and ruin it all.

Checking in at over 2 hours, Apple’s WWDC keynote this past Monday was exceedingly long. Naturally, Apple had a lot of ground to cover, with no shortage of new features to introduce. Apple is on top of the world, just as it has been for years now. While many pundits and analysts have declared that the company is “doomed” for a multitude of reasons, Apple has continued to post record sales and profit numbers and is still far and away the most valuable tech company in the world. With this in mind, it’s difficult to find an area where Apple is really vulnerable, although BuzzFeed’s Charlie Warzel thinks he’s found one: Namely, Apple’s own apps and services that it pre-loads onto the iPhone still aren’t very good.

iOS 9 beta 1 on the iPhone 6 isn’t exactly battery-friendly. To deal with this, you have to either uninstall it and get back to iOS 8.3 or just put up with having terrible battery life on your device. However, it looks like there’s a third option: It just so happens that you can purchase a 10,000 mAh portable power source on Amazon right now for less than $10, which should fix all your battery problems for the time being. And if that’s not cool enough, consider this external battery pack can recharge two devices at the same time.

Both Google and Apple have now released developer preview versions of their upcoming mobile operating systems. Coincidentally, both iOS 9 and Android M are focusing primarily on releasing a more stable OS this year, though each of them is also bringing some neat new features to the table. Since both mobile platforms can be already installed on supported devices, it’s time to take a look at what these betas look like side by side.

The first iOS 9 beta has only been out for a couple of days but developers have already been going over it with a fine-toothed comb to see whether it offers any hints about future iOS devices. 9to5Mac directs our attention to some code uncovered by developer Hazma Sood that shows a tantalizing glimpse at possible camera specs for future iPhones.

Samsung yesterday introduced two new eye popping 55-inch OLED displays, one being a mirror and the other a transparent display (seen above).
Seemingly straight out of the future, the displays will initially be positioned for retail use, with Samsung boasting that the displays will help transform personalized shopping with a more visually engaging experience.

I thought I was done with endless runners. After Temple Run stormed the App Store in 2011, endless runners became a staple of the mobile gaming scene, from brilliant and simple 2D entries like Canabalt and Alto’s Adventure to branded freeloaders like Sonic Dash and Spider-Man Unlimited.
Most have been pleasant distractions, but few have kept me glued to my iPhone screen for hours on end. Blades of Brim is one of those games.
