Apple’s placing a lot of emphasis on iOS security (especially when compared with that “toxic hellstew” Android) and on privacy (again, compared to its rival) but it turns out that iOS might not be as secure or private as Apple has led customers to believe. Security researcher Jonathan Zdziarski has a new paper out calledIdentifying Backdoors, Attack Points, and Surveillance Mechanisms in iOS Devices,” in which he reveals Apple’s complex tools inside iOS that would allow Apple to share certain user data at the request of law enforcement without the user knowledge.

More importantly, with or without Apple’s help, spying agencies such as NSA and other third parties that are very familiar with how iOS operates can apparently use these vulnerabilities to grab plenty of data from an iPhone, or to install applications for spying and other malicious purposes without the user’s knowledge.

With several independent reports claiming that mass production of Apple’s new iPhone 6 gets underway this month, leaks are kicking into high gear. Yes, believe it or not, the consistent flow of iPhone rumors and leaks we have seen over the past few months was not “high gear.” We saw a few interesting iPhone 6 leaks slip out over the past few days, and one of them was a leak of what is claimed to be a completely revamped iPhone 6 part that, if authentic, further supports the notion that we’re in for a big redesign in Apple’s iPhone lineup this fall.

We have good news and bad news, Apple fans. The good news is that the increasing volume of iPhone 6 parts leaks is almost certainly evidence that the new handset is entering mass production. The bad news is that if the latest leak is authentic, rumors that the back of the iPhone 6 might not be as ugly as it appears on the many dummy mockups we’ve seen might not pan out.

Google Maps is an amazing tool that has quite literally changed our lives. Even the shortest trips to unknown locations used to be a production that involved searches and routing on Mapquest (or, heaven forbid, on an actual paper map) and then carrying printouts of one’s path to consult while driving. Now, we type a quick search in Google Maps on our phones and go.

Of course, Google is hardly one to rest on its laurels despite having released a product that has had such an impact. The company is constantly adding nifty new features to Maps, and now it’s working on one we cannot wait to get our hands on.

We have seen dozens of dummy mockups of Apple’s next-generation iPhone 6 over the past few months, and the odds are very good that we can expect Apple’s actual iPhone 6 to resemble them when it launches sometime this fall. But according to a recent report from Nikkei, which has a very good track record when it comes to Apple’s unreleased devices, these iPhone 6 mockups feature a massive design flaw compared to Apple’s real next-generation smartphone that will completely change the look of the device.

Thankfully, we can now see what Apple’s iPhone 6 might look like without that big flaw, courtesy of one of the best in the business.
