Remember Google’s interesting diabetes-detecting smart contact lens project the company unveiled in early 2014? The smart lens technology that would offer users a simpler, non-invasive way of measuring blood sugar while also improving eyesight is certainly interesting to Novartis, with the company on Tuesday announcing a partnership between its eye care division Alcon and Google’s X division to manufacture the lenses.

If there’s one species of tech fans that we find awesomely fascinating, it’s the Gadget Contrarians — that is, the people who love using services, devices and platforms that have been overlooked or dismissed by the mass market for whatever reason. Apple and IBM used to be the bitterest of arch rivals in the personal computer market in the ’80s but now they’re teaming up to help bring iOS to more enterprise customers than ever before. Re/code reports that Apple and IBM have agreed to an exclusive new partnership that will “help companies deploy wireless devices and business-specific applications to run on them” using iOS as the primary platform.

Yes, all but two of the top 80 highest grossing iPhone apps in America are now free downloads. The freemium beast has eaten the entire app industry. But there are still a couple of rare exceptions out there — paid downloads that generate millions of dollars of revenue.

The Microsoft-Google enmity is one of the very interesting rivalries in the tech world, and the Windows maker has just taken another hit at its archenemy. The Verge has learned that Microsoft has purposely removed the option for Nokia Lumia owners to select Google Search as their default smartphone engine on newly launched devices, including the Lumia 630 and Lumia 930. Interestingly though, some European versions of the handsets do let users select Google Search as the default search engine for online queries, and Microsoft has not commented on the matter.

Earlier this year, a report from the Taiwanese publication Business Times revealed that the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 phablet might be delayed into 2015 on account of supply chain issues regarding the size of the battery in the new phone. The iPhone 6 is reportedly going to be even thinner than previous models, necessitating a thinner battery than suppliers were prepared to provide in mass quantities.

In addition to detailing Apple’s purported iWatch launch plans – the company is expected to have two sizes for its smartwatch and three versions in total – Taiwanese publication Economic Daily News also said that the iPhone maker will launch three iPad versions this year, including a new 9.7-inch iPad Air, a new 7.9-inch iPad mini and a 12.9-inch iPad, also known as the iPad Pro in some reports.
