BlackBerry’s stock may be on the rise, up 36% so far in 2014 as of Monday’s close, but brand loyalty in the United Kingdom has seemingly hit an all-time low. According to a new note from CashForPhonesComparison.com, which compares more than 35 used mobile phone buying services in an effort to get customers the best price on their trade-ins before they upgrade to a new handset, only about 8% of consumers who use the site to trade in a used BlackBerry say they plan to purchase another BlackBerry device.

Instead, the overwhelming majority — a staggering 66% — say they intend to upgrade from a BlackBerry device to an iPhone.

FEATURED: The truth about Google and evil

Why the company doing more good for society than any of its rivals can’t help but be evil

Last year’s annual Google I/O conference opened with a painfully long keynote presentation capped off by a wonderfully moving speech from CEO Larry Page, and an open question and answer session with developers in the audience. It was fantastic.

With his voice hoarse from vocal cord nerve strain, Page bared all while discussing Google, its rivals and technology’s role in society. Saddened by the state of the industry, Page spoke with passion and pleaded with the audience and Silicon Valley. “Most important things are not zero sum,” he said while on stage at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. “We should be building great things that don’t exist.”

“Technology should do the hard work so people can get on doing the things that make them happiest in life,” Page said. And he meant it. Anyone watching Google’s chief executive would have found it impossible to deny that Page was speaking from the heart. Google wants to build things that make all our lives easier. It wants to drive innovation. It wants to make the world a better place.

But Google’s motives aren’t always pure.

Filed under:

Ford has quite a party ready for the Goodwood Festival of Speed starting on June 27. Not only is the 2015 Mustang going to be driving in front of the European public for the first time, the Blue Oval is also unveiling its 2015 refresh for the Focus ST.

Official details about the latest Focus hot hatch are practically nonexistent at this point. Ford’s teaser image shows narrower headlights, and the company says that the ST also benefits from the technical and quality improvements from the refreshed standard model, which likely means an even more Aston-Martin-like grille. However, any improvements for the power or handling are a mystery for now.

Ford will even give visitors to the festival the chance to drive the new ST – at least virtually. Gran Turismo 6 kiosks will be on hand with the hot hatch loaded up to race the Goodwood Hill Climb. There will also be real-time races between former Stig Ben Collins in the real ST challenging a player up the hill in the game.

There will be at least two, new Mustangs there as well for the British crowds to check out. A 5.0-litre coupe will challenge the Goodwood Hill, and a convertible will also be on display. Scroll down to watch a brief, teaser video of the 2015 Focus ST testing and read the full release about Ford’s plans for the fest.

Back in mid-February — on Valentine’s Day, in fact — I included Aviate in a collection of 5 great Android apps that can do amazing things the iPhone cannot. The app was using a queue system for new users, and it often took more than a week for new accounts to be activated. Receiving an invite from an existing Aviate user would bypass the queue and give users instant access, and I mentioned in my coverage that I had a few invites left.

Four months later, people still contact me almost every day looking for invites — that’s how hot Aviate is among Android users. And now, Yahoo-owned Aviate has finally opened up the app so that anyone can begin using it as soon as they download it.

Samsung has apparently had enough of being bullied by Apple in the global smartphone patent war, and it has no intentions of taking the matter sitting down. According to Thomson Reuters’ 2014 State of Innovation Report, Samsung filed a whopping 2,179 smartphone patents last year, including 1,362 related to semiconductor materials and processes. That staggering figure is more than three times the 647 mobile telephony patents Apple filed in 2013.

Apple is going to start 12-inch MacBook Air mass-production next quarter, Digitimes has learned from sources familiar with the matter, with Quanta Computer apparently being entrusted with assembling the new MacBook Air model. Apple wants a slightly bigger Air model than its entry-level 11-inch model in order to better differentiate the iPad and Air – the 11-inch MacBook Air has a screen size similar to the iPad Air’s – and “establish a clear boundary between the two product lines.”
