• One of the coronavirus vaccine candidates that has shown encouraging results is the one being developed at Oxford, which could be ready for emergency use this September.
• However, researchers are running into a potential issue with testing, as there might not be enough COVID-19 cases in the UK to actually see if the vaccine works during the late stages of the human trial.
• Delays in research could lead to a postponed “launch” for the coronavirus drug, assuming it is actually effective and safe for humans.

If you’ve been following news about the evolution of the novel coronavirus pandemic, chances are that you’ve heard about Moderna, Oxford, CanSino, and BioNTech, which have all reached human trials with their coronavirus vaccine candidates, and have been featured in plenty of reports in the past few weeks. More than 100 labs are looking to develop coronavirus vaccines, and at least eight of them are in various phases of clinical trials.

Moderna and Oxford are easily the two most talked about vaccine candidates right now. The former made a partial announcement about human testing that raised some eyebrows, especially after word got out that several company officials executed pre-planned stock sales around the announcement. That doesn’t mean Moderna’s vaccine doesn’t work or won’t be ready in a potentially record time. It just paints the company in a less flattering light. The Oxford vaccine, on the other hand, might be deployed as soon as this September, with both Britain and the US having secured manufacturing capacity for the drug. However, the researchers might have to delay their vaccine because they’re running into a bizarre problem. Just as they’re recruiting more volunteers for the advanced phases of the research, there’s not enough COVID-19 to go around.

• Chinese space group CASC is sending an orbiter and rover to the Red Planet in the hopes of finding evidence of past or present life.

The country announced that it believes it will be ready to send its Mars mission skyward in July. • Vitamin D isn’t a magical novel coronavirus cure, researchers warn in a new study, saying that more research is required to establish a clear link between vitamin D levels and COVID-19 risks.
• The study advises against supplementing vitamin D intake beyond regular levels in an attempt to prevent or treat COVID-19.
• Researchers say that a balanced diet combined with exposure to sunlight could help with vitamin D intake. Professional help is also advised to address any vitamin D issues.

Researchers theorized in a recent study that vitamin D might help save the lives of patients infected with the novel coronavirus. At the time, we warned that the study had not been reviewed by other researchers and that it didn’t propose conclusions of an actual clinical trial where vitamin D would have been compared to a placebo. The researches didn’t measure vitamin D levels in COVID-19 patients either, looking instead at other patient data, and using other health parameters to determine the expected levels of vitamin D.

We also told you that you shouldn’t attempt to prevent or treat COVID-19 at home with vitamins or other health supplements that go viral on social media, and to follow guidelines from your doctor. Fast forward a few weeks, and a new study warns that high doses of vitamin D can’t prevent or treat COVID-19.

• The design of Samsung’s unannounced Galaxy Note 20+ has been revealed in a new leak.
• Steve Hemmerstoffer (@OnLeaks) shared renders of the Galaxy Note 20+ on Monday, complete with the dimensions of the phone and the subtle design changes from the Galaxy Note 10+.
• Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20+ in August at a digital Unpacked event, but the novel coronavirus pandemic could potentially have an impact on the release date.

By all accounts, the Galaxy S20 series hasn’t exactly been breaking sales records since it launched earlier this year. Part of that can undoubtedly be blamed on the viral pandemic that interrupted the economies of every country on the planet, but the lack of major upgrades and the baffling decision not to release a more affordable Galaxy S20e model played a part as well. This puts even more pressure on the impending release of the Galaxy Note 20.

Last week, David Kowalski and Pigtou teamed up to give us our best look yet at what might be the final design of the Galaxy Note 20. The renders were said to be based on leaked CAD drawings, and showcased some of the ways that the design had changed when compared to the Galaxy Note 10. • If recent coronavirus data in Nevada proves promising, Las Vegas may open back up for business next Friday.
• Casino floors and restaurants at many resorts may reopen. Bars, clubs, and other types of live entertainment, however, will remain closed for the foreseeable future.
• Gamblers at casino tables can expect to see a host of new rules designed to keep cards and dice clean.

Las Vegas, a city typically overflowing with tourists at all hours of the night, has effectively been a ghost town since the city implemented strict quarantine measures back in March. Now, as many states begin to implement their plans to reopen, the place affectionately — or perhaps derisively — referred to as Sin City is poised to open back up for business on June 4.

According to Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak, the typically bustling Las Vegas strip is tentatively scheduled to reopen next Thursday, provided, of course, that the number of coronavirus cases doesn’t skyrocket unexpectedly. A final determination is set to be made this week so that officials can gauge updated coronavirus figures that encapsulate the Memorial Day weekend.

• Coronavirus face masks and other personal protective equipment (PPE) can’t destroy the new pathogen on contact, but researchers are looking at ways for fabrics to neutralize its infectivity.
• Researchers who have used electric fields to create electroceutical bandages that can prevent infections while treating wounds think the same technique could be used against the novel coronavirus.
• The researchers were able to demonstrate the effectiveness of such fabrics against a known coronavirus in a lab, suggesting that future PPE products could benefit from the technology.

The CDC says that you’re less likely to pick up the novel coronavirus from surfaces, but there’s plenty of evidence that shows the life-threatening pathogen travel easily through the air and can stick on surfaces for hours or days. We’ve seen plenty of scary videos that show how easily the virus spreads from human to human, proving how vital social distancing is. The same clips indicate that the use of PPE, such as face masks, is key during the pandemic. But you have to use the mask correctly and avoid touching it. The virus can survive for days on the outside and inside of face masks as well. You should avoid touching your face while you’re outdoors.

Scientists are already studying technologies that might help them apply an outer layer to face masks that would kill the coronavirus on contact. Now, some researchers think they could apply an electric current to the exterior of a face mask to destroy the virus’s ability to infect cells.

• A new leak claims that a future model of Apple’s AirPods will have ambient light sensors that might be used to monitor the health of the user in real-time.
• According to the leak, Apple will incorporate these sensors into AirPods within the next two years.
• Apple was previously rumored to be working on health monitoring features for the AirPods.

Despite the ongoing threat of the novel coronavirus, Apple is having an especially busy 2020. In March, both the iPad Pro and the MacBook Air lines were refreshed. Then in April, the second-generation iPhone SE made its long-awaited debut. May isn’t quite over yet, but we’ve already seen a new 13-inch MacBook Pro that features a redesigned Magic Keyboard and twice the storage space of its predecessor. And that’s to say nothing of the iPhone 12 line set to arrive this fall, which is said to be made up of four distinct models, all with OLED displays and 5G support.

One of the few product lines we haven’t heard much about is the company’s premium headphones. Apple introduced its AirPods Pro last fall, and although rumors about new models and hardware updates have cropped up online every few weeks, the timing of the next AirPods launch has yet to be nailed down. Based on new reports from DigiTimes, that might have something to do with the major upgrades Apple is planning for the product.

• Coronavirus drug remdesivir was called the standard of care for COVID-19 patients in late April when Dr. Anthony Fauci announced the early results of an extensive study.
• Fauci said the drug can speed up recovery, although the COVID-19 treatment did not affect mortality. The drug should be combined with other therapies in a future study.
• The preliminary study has now finally been published, revealing that remdesivir isn’t the coronavirus miracle cure that some may have hoped it’d be.

The world has been battling the novel coronavirus for more than five months now, with more than 5.5 million people having been infected during this time. As of Monday morning, nearly 348,000 people died of COVID-19 complications, and millions of people are out of work as a result of the severe social distancing measures put in place around the world since March. All those sacrifices were not in vain, as we’ve seen tremendous progress from the medical community during that time. More than 2.27 million people have already recovered from COVID-19, and doctors have a much better understanding of how the SARS-CoV-2 spreads, how it infects the body, and how it kills. They also know it can be neutralized, and plenty of new therapies are being developed, including drugs repurposed for the new infection as well as new treatments developed just to combat coronavirus.

There’s no magical cure, however, and only one of these promising drugs has been upgraded to “standard” use in COVID-19. Remdesivir is the medicine in question, a drug that Dr. Anthony Fauci lauded in late April when he explained the results of a massive remdesivir study whose conclusions were very promising. That study was finally published online on Friday, and the results are indeed encouraging. However, just as Fauci cautioned back in April, it’s not all good news.
