Apple on Monday announced that it is going to now allow users to install third-party keyboard software on iPhones and iPads for the first time starting with iOS 8 and there are already two contenders who are lining up with offerings of their own.

Apple on Monday unveiled two major updates for its main operating systems, including OS X Yosemite and iOS 8, that promise to further unify the user experience across devices whether they’re smartphones, tablets or computers. Unsurprisingly, the coolest Yosemite feature Apple unveiled on stage is the new operating system’s “continuity” feature, or its ability to allow users to stay on the same app, and continue their tasks across devices when switching to an iPhone or iPad – obviously, the same “continuity” feature is available on iOS devices, although it’s on the Mac that it shines.

Unlike iOS 8 beta, which is now available only to iOS users that have a developer account or access to one, Apple’s OS X Yosemite will be available in beta to regular Mac users. Apple has updated its website with information about its upcoming OS X version, and it’s currently taking registrations for the OS X Yosemite Beta Program. Fortunately, the beta program will be available to the first 1 million people who sign up for it by going to this webpage, which means plenty of Mac users will get try the operating system before it’s officially launched this fall.

This is not the first time Apple has sent a chill down the spines of mobile carrier executives. Years ago, the launch of the iMessage platform on iPhone was a quite obvious and direct attempt to undermine carriers’ highly lucrative text-messaging business. Over the past couple of years, though, it hasn’t been iMessage that has undermined SMS revenues around the world — it has been the cluster of cross-platform messaging apps like WhatsApp, LINE, Kakao, WeChat, etc.

Apple unveiled iOS 8 earlier today during its big WWDC 2014 keynote, and it said during the show that the first beta version of its new mobile software would be released to developers later on Monday. As promised, iOS 8 beta 1 is now live in Apple’s iOS developer portal with build number 12A4265u, and it’s ready to be downloaded to your compatible iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

Apple took the wraps off of its huge iOS 8 update just moments ago, but developers won’t have to wait much longer to take the brand new mobile platform for a spin. During Monday’s Worldwide Developer Conference keynote, Apple gave the world a preview of the hot new mobile software that will launch to the public this fall. In the meantime, “developers” will have access to the new software beginning today. Developers is in quotes, of course, because anyone and everyone who pays $99 for an iOS developer account has access to the new iOS 8 beta software.
