There’s something you need to know about coronavirus and face masks

%name There’s something you need to know about coronavirus and face masks by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Face masks are advised during the novel coronavirus health crisis, whether they’re homemade or disposable. Several studies have shown the virus can travel in the air with ease, and face masks can reduce the risk of transmission.
  • But the COVID-19 virus can survive on surfaces, including the exterior and interior sides of face masks.
  • New data shows that the virus can survive for up to 7 days on face masks, so reusable masks should be cleaned after each use and disposable masks should be discarded.

The novel coronavirus can live on a variety of surfaces for anywhere from a few hours to several days, as was reinforced by a new study a few weeks ago. That’s why we’ve all trained ourselves to treat surfaces as possible contaminants and why we’ve been cleaning counters, door handles, and basically anything that may contain traces of the virus more often than before. That’s also why we’ve been more apprehensive about packages the delivery person drops off, and why we’ve been wiping down certain products purchased from grocery stores and other places. The CDC a few days ago updated one of its COVID-19 pages to make it clear that the novel coronavirus spreads mainly from person to person, and surface transmission is less likely. That doesn’t change the fact that it can happen, and that the virus can survive on some surfaces for long periods.

A new report from an Italian health authority explains that SARS-CoV-2 can survive on the interior of face masks for as long as 4 days, which is an important reminder that masks have to be handled with care, especially if you’re handling them for a loved one who is infected.

HBO Max launches next week with hundreds of movies and TV shows

%name HBO Max launches next week with hundreds of movies and TV shows by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The HBO Max lineup for June has just been released, and it includes “hundreds” of movies and TV series, according to the company, for what will be the streamer’s first full month of operation.
  • HBO Max officially launches on Wednesday, May 27, with everything HBO has ever released plus a library of third-party shows and movies — as well as HBO Max originals.
  • The new service will cost $14.99 per month. HBO Now and Charter video subscribers will get HBO Max for free, and so will millions of AT&T customers.

A new heavy-hitter joins the streaming video landscape next week, with the launch of HBO Max coming as a culmination of plans by HBO’s parent WarnerMedia to transform the premium cable network into more of a mainstream, Netflix-like player as opposed to the boutique identity HBO has cultivated since its inception.

HBO Max will cost $14.99 per month when it launches on May 27, which puts it on the expensive side relative to other streaming services like Netflix and Disney+, but it will come storming out of the gate right away, nonetheless. At launch, for example, the HBO Max lineup will include more than 10,000 hours of content, including every original series, movie, and documentary HBO has ever released — plus a wide variety of licensed content from Warner Bros. Down the line, the long-awaited, much-hyped director’s cut of Justice League that has long been the subject of a viral #ReleaseTheSnyderCut rallying cry online will debut on HBO Max in 2021.

A bunch of space junk just lit up the skies over Australia

%name A bunch of space junk just lit up the skies over Australia by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • A massive fireball appeared in the skies above Australia on Thursday night, prompting many witnesses to believe they were witnessing a meteorite entering Earth’s atmosphere.
  • After a closer look by experts, the object was declared to be nothing more than a heap of space junk left by a Russian rocket launch earlier in the day.
  • Roscosmos, Russia’s space agency, launched a military satellite on Thursday and the object seen by witnesses is believed to have been a discarded rocket stage.

For Australians in some parts of the continent, Thursday night brought with it a light show of cosmic proportions. Multiple reports from Victoria to Tasmania claimed that a meteorite could be seen streaking across the sky, leaving a long, bright tail in its wake as it burned up in Earth’s atmosphere.

Witnesses believed they were seeing a chunk of space rock meet its end right before their eyes. Unfortunately, the reality is a little bit less awesome: It was probably just a bunch of Russian space junk.

Doctors might already know which drugs can kill the coronavirus

%name Doctors might already know which drugs can kill the coronavirus by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Researchers looking for a coronavirus cure have figured out how the new pathogen interferes with the immune response once it infects cells.
  • The doctors showed that SARS-CoV-2 can inhibit interferon cells that would be able to slow down the viral replication, but allows other proteins to call for help from B and T cells.
  • A possible COVID-19 treatment could include interferons, these studies suggest. One other study that showed a triple-drug combo that includes interferon is effective against the novel coronavirus.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Getting rid of the novel coronavirus infection is one of the priorities of doctors treating COVID-19 patients. Several therapies are in trial phases, as physicians have been using various drugs to address COVID-19 symptoms and help the immune system kill the virus. Some of these drugs, like remdesivir and a triple-combo therapy, can hasten recovery times. Blood thinners can prevent complications by preventing blood clotting.

But scientists have started figuring out how the virus attempts to neutralize the immune system’s response, and think they know what drugs could actually kill the virus.

A stolen iPhone may be behind the avalanche of iOS 14 leaks

%name A stolen iPhone may be behind the avalanche of iOS 14 leaks by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Apple will likely release iOS 14 to the public this coming September.
  • A number of iOS 14 features have leaked out over the past few weeks and months.
  • A stolen iPhone 11 may be the source of a number of iOS 14 rumors and leaks we’ve seen recently.

Even though we’re months away from a new iPhone release and just a few weeks away from Apple unveiling iOS 14, we seemingly know all there is to know about Apple’s next-gen mobile hardware and software. Despite Apple’s best efforts, and despite Tim Cook exclaiming that Apple would be “doubling down” on product secrecy, details surrounding upcoming iPhone models and iOS releases routinely leak out months ahead of time.

When it comes to an upcoming iPhone release, it’s easy to see how information tends to leak out. Apple’s supply chain, after all, is incredibly vast. In turn, trusting supply chain partners and component suppliers to effectively keep a lid on new designs and features is simply not realistic at this point. iOS leaks, however, are an entirely different matter. While you can blame the supply chain for iPhone leaks, iOS leaks, at least in theory, should be far less frequent given that new features and code should rarely leave the purview of Apple engineers.

Cancer drug that worked on Zika and Ebola might stop coronavirus

%name Cancer drug that worked on Zika and Ebola might stop coronavirus by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Coronavirus treatment options could include a cancer drug that showed antiviral activity against Zika and Ebola.
  • BerGenBio’s bemcentinib is currently in Phase 2 clinical trials in the UK. If effective, the drug could be used in COVID-19 therapies in the future.
  • This potential coronavirus cure comes as a one-a-day pill that could stop the virus from getting into cells and prevent the infection from deactivating a crucial immune response.

We’re all hoping that vaccines will be found to fight against the novel coronavirus and prevent the disease from infecting more people in the years to come. But vaccines might not work, and that’s why we’re not placing all our eggs in one basket. More than 100 labs are testing vaccine candidates, including a handful of teams that have reached human trials with promising results. But doctors are also developing new COVID-19 therapies that either rely on meds used to treat other ailments, or brand new antibodies-based drugs.

One such drug is remdesivir, which was conceived to treat Ebola but showed promise in COVID-19 therapy. Researchers from Britain and Norway have a different antiviral in mind, one that showed promising results against Zika and Ebola in lab testing, and which is now being tried on coronavirus patients in a clinical trial in the UK.

SpaceX’s Crew Dragon arrives for its date with destiny

%name SpaceX’s Crew Dragon arrives for its date with destiny by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • SpaceX’s Crew Dragon is days away from its highly anticipated launch to the International Space Station.
  • It will be the first crewed launch in SpaceX history, and the first time NASA has sent humans to space from US soil since the Space Shuttle Era.
  • NASA still hasn’t decided how long the astronauts will stay in space.

NASA is less than a week away from launching humans into space from US soil for the first time since the Space Shuttle era. It’s an absolutely huge moment for NASA, but perhaps an even bigger moment for SpaceX. It will be a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon capsule that will send NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken into space, and it’ll be the first manned launch in the company’s history.

Now, as the anticipation for the launch reaches a fever pitch, the SpaceX hardware has arrived at Kennedy Space Center and preparations have begun for the launch. The finish line of NASA’s Commercial Crew program is fast approaching.

Starting coronavirus lockdowns just 1 week earlier could have saved 36,000 lives

%name Starting coronavirus lockdowns just 1 week earlier could have saved 36,000 lives by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The US is closing in on a grim COVID-19 milestone, approaching 100,000 coronavirus deaths since the outbreak of the pandemic that has infected more than 1.5 million Americans.
  • Researchers at Columbia University have produced a model showing what would have happened if lockdowns around the country had started just 1 week earlier. No surprise, thousands of coronavirus deaths here could have been avoided.

One of the most frustrating aspects of the response in the US to the COVID-19 crisis is just how fractured it’s been on a national level, such that some states took action earlier than others, some embarked on stricter mitigation practices, guidance has seemed contradictory at times from health agencies, and each state has been on its own lockdown schedule. Now that we’ve come out the other side of at least the first phase of the crisis, with all 50 states now having reopened to some degree, everyone is taking stock about what comes next — and also assessing how we got here in the first place.

One thing we do now know, according to a new analysis from researchers at Columbia University: Some 36,000 coronavirus deaths in the US could have been avoided if we’d have started lockdowns just one week earlier. You know, the same lockdowns that caused such an outcry around the country and sparked protests in the name of freedom.
