Some Edison Mail users discovered over the weekend that they could access accounts belonging to other customers, which appeared directly inside the Edison Email client on iOS. Many took to social media to signal the security vulnerability that allowed them to access strangers’ emails, and the company was quick to respond. Edison Mail was quick to issue fixes, explaining that it’s only a limited number of users who have been impacted by the security glitch, and only people on iOS experienced it. This is a major security and privacy breach, one that Edison Mail didn’t explain in full.

It’s not just you. Everyone who owns a second- or third-generation Apple TV media player can no longer stream HBO Now shows on the device, just as HBO warned more than a month ago. HBO said at the time that it decided to remove both HBO Now and HBO Go from these Apple TV models “in order to best provide the best streaming experience.” While HBO Now is gone, HBO Go will remain active for a few extra months, giving users time to upgrade their streaming setup to make up for the changes.

• More Apple stores are set to reopen in the US and around the world this week, following their closure back in March as the worst of the coronavirus pandemic began to unfold.
• In a letter published on Sunday, one Apple executive described the measures underway to reopen the stores safely, including the mandating of face masks and temperature checks for all employees and customers.

Apple is continuing to gradually reopen more of its stores in the US and around the world, with the iPhone maker set to open an additional 25 US stores this week along with 12 in Canada and 10 in Italy. The company is also ready to talk about how that process will unfold, according to a letter Apple senior vice president Deirdre O’Brien posted on the company’s website Sunday which details the safety protocols that will accompany a restart of those stores’ operations.

What that includes, among other things, is a requirement that everyone inside these reopened stores wear a face mask — employees and customers, alike. According to O’Brien’s letter, Apple will provide you with a face covering if you don’t bring your own. “Temperature checks will be conducted at the door, and posted health questions will screen for those with symptoms — like cough or fever — or who have had recent exposure to someone infected with COVID‑19,” O’Brien continues. Additionally, store employees throughout the day will be “conducting enhanced deep cleanings that place special emphasis on all surfaces, display products, and highly trafficked areas.”

The novel coronavirus is here to stay, WHO officials said earlier this week. Before that, Dr. Anthony Fauci said it’s not likely for the virus to be eradicated anytime soon or even at all. That may have sounded like bad news, but it really isn’t. We’ve already reached a point where we have several viable COVID-19 therapies that can reduce the time it takes to recover and prevent complications, and they’ll be further perfected in the months to come. Moreover, an increasing number of companies are developing lab-made antibodies that can replicate the success of plasma transfusions from COVID-19 survivors to defeat the virus. And the first vaccine candidates that are effective and safe might be approved for emergency use as soon as this fall.

More than 115 teams were working on vaccine candidates as of mid-April, and several of them have started clinical trials. The results are already coming in for some of them, and the promising Oxford drug that could be ready by September just delivered more good news: ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 works on monkeys.

An incredible new technique is giving blind men and women the ability to identify shapes and objects that are quite literally drawn onto their brains. A research paper describing the technique was just published in the journal Cell, and as ScienceNews reports, it could be a step toward offering blind individuals a way to visually interact with the world around them.

This latest development builds on existing research that demonstrated how electrical impulses to the brain’s visual cortex can cause a person to visualize flashes of light. This was promising, as it meant that a blind person could still “see,” but simple flashes wouldn’t be particularly useful in everyday life.

• The novel coronavirus can be transmitted by talking loudly or singing, a new study the CDC published revealed. Touching the same surfaces as an infected person is also a risk.
• One COVID-19 patient infected 52 others from a choir group during singing practice in mid-March that was attended by 61 people.
• The study confirms existing hypotheses about the ways the virus can spread to others and indicates that social distancing, face masks, and good hygiene should be top priorities for reducing the spread.

Researchers theorized weeks ago that merely talking is enough to emit virus-carrying droplets that can spread the novel coronavirus. An increasing number of models have shown how droplets travel in the air after a cough or a sneeze, and while talking, with the most recent one actually measuring the amount of virus a person can eject while speaking loudly. These studies also suggested that the circulation of air in a closed space may contribute to the dispersion of COVID-19 aerosol, and could increase the risk of infection for other people in the area. Additional research proved that the virus can survive anywhere from hours to days on certain surfaces, so when a person talks, sneezes, or coughs, everything around them can be contaminated with droplets that can contain infectious viral particles.

What all this research proves is that social distancing is required whether there’s a lockdown or not, and that face mask use is paramount, especially if you have to go inside of places where you’ll be around other people. Washing your hands as often as possible is also recommended, especially after touching objects or surfaces that others have touched. But back in early-to-mid March, we didn’t have all this data, and we had no idea how easy it can be to get COVID-19. A new study reveals that one asymptomatic choir member attending a 2.5-hour session was responsible for infecting 52 of his or her 61 colleagues, including two people who ended up dying from COVID-19 complications.
