As I write this, it’s in the early morning hours of Tuesday, November 12 — launch day, for those of you who’ve been keeping score, for Disney+. Having already signed up for the service before today, I decided to log in a little while ago to check on the status of the launch (as there’d been conflicting information reported about when the whole thing would finally go live), and I found a pleasant surprise — about an hour ago, Disney+ was ready on the web for me to log in. I specify “about an hour ago,” because I immediately did what I suspect many of you will who’ve been waiting for today’s launch:

I dived straightaway into Episode 1 of The Mandalorian. The following will be my initial impressions, so I’ll go ahead and get the requisite *SPOILER* warning out of the way. I’ll try not to ruin certain things (and I’ll refrain from spoiling a huge WHOA moment in the final minutes of the show, one so big you’ll immediately realize why Disney wanted to preserve this surprise for as long as possible). But let me go ahead and tell you right off the bat — Disney has fired a seriously impressive opening salvo for its entry today into the so-called Streaming Wars.

This adorable mouse-deer was feared extinct, but now it’s back

When a species of animal hasn’t been seen in decades, it’s often feared that mankind or natural environmental factors have driven it to extinction. That was the case with the Vietnam mouse-deer, also known as the silver-backed chevrotain, a creature that was once considered the smallest living hoofed animal species, but had not been seen for three full decades.

That all changed this month when researchers using motion-activated cameras in the forests of Vietnam reported the re-discovery of the species. The discovery was reported in a new researcher paper published in Nature Ecology & Evolution.

During Tesla’s earnings conference call a few weeks ago, Elon Musk teased an impending over-the-air software update that he said would improve performance across the entirety of Tesla’s vehicular lineup.

After discussing how much range users can eek out of the Model S, Musk said that the software update in question might see the range on the Model S go from 373 miles to 380 miles.

YouTubers are understandably terrified after this change to the Terms of Service

%name YouTubers are understandably terrified after this change to the Terms of Service by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

YouTube, which has already sent many channel creators scrambling in the wake of the so-called “Adpocalypse,” just gave creators yet another reason to worry that the income they get from the platform could be disrupted or even eliminated at any moment.

The “Adpocalypse” is the term laced with a bit of black humor that many of those creators already use to refer to YouTube’s demonetization of their channels, which for those this has happened to prevents the inclusion of paid ads in their videos. YouTube has been accused of pursuing this trend inside of a black box, sometimes with little to no visibility into why this happens and who it happens to. Meanwhile, a Terms of Service update along these lines has given creators yet another reason to worry.

Science says you shouldn’t yell at your dog

%name Science says you shouldn’t yell at your dog by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Anyone who has adopted a puppy knows that they can be a handful. There are many ways to go about correcting negative behaviors and promoting positive ones, but in recent years, antiquated “aversive” training has been outpaced by reward-based reinforcement training, and a new study suggests that the benefits are many.

Aversive training is, for many people, an almost instinctual reaction to a dog that is misbehaving. You see your puppying gnawing on a piece of furniture and you yell. The pup stops what they were doing and eventually learns to fear the consequences of those negative actions. It can work, but there may be unintended side effects.

The Galaxy S11 might look a lot like the Note 10, insider claims

%name The Galaxy S11 might look a lot like the Note 10, insider claims by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The Galaxy S10 was Samsung’s first flagship to make use of Infinity-O hole-punch screens, but not everybody liked the asymmetric display. The circular or pill-shaped display cutout sat near the top-right corner of the phone, rather than in the middle, housing up to two cameras and a depth sensor, depending on the model.

Samsung then came out with the Galaxy Note 10 in early August, utilizing a similar display. Only this time around, the hole-punch selfie camera is placed in the middle of the display, and only houses a single camera. Will Samsung be able to refine that design in any way? A new leak suggests that the Galaxy S11 will have an even better design, but you shouldn’t get excited about Samsung delivering a brand new take on hole-punch cameras in 2020.

%name George R.R. Martin shares behind the scenes look at HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

HBO finally made it official at the end of October, confirming weeks of speculation and chatter about the possibility of a Game of Thrones prequel series by giving a 10-episode order to House of the Dragon. The show will be a dramatization of the events described in Fire & Blood, a history of the Targaryen dynasty that George R.R. Martin published in book form a year ago this month.

iOS 13 jailbreak tool Checkra1n enters public beta

iOS 13 is great and all, but could it be even better? Apple’s mobile operating system is locked down, but jailbreak developers have always found ways to bypass its protections and allow the installation of unauthorized apps. The latest is Checkra1n, a new jailbreak tool developed by Axi0mx.

The tool is still very early in its development, but it’s available publicly for any brave souls who want to help test it. As 9to5Mac notes, the bypass utilizes a newly-discovered exploit nicknamed “checkm8.”

A MacBook Pro with a better keyboard design may finally arrive this week

%name A MacBook Pro with a better keyboard design may finally arrive this week by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

For a company that prides itself on world-class design and products that “just work,” the MacBook Pro Apple introduced in late 2016 has proven to be nothing short of an embarrassment. As you’ve likely heard by now, Apple’s 2016 MacBook Pro featured a butterfly keyboard design that was supposed to deliver an improved typing experience. Instead, MacBook Pro owners over the past few years have had to deal with a range of frustrating usability issues. Though the new keyboard design was slimmer, it was consistently unreliable and all too prone to breaking down completely if even the slightest piece of debris happened to wedge itself underneath a key.

The good news is that Apple, at long last, has seemingly realized the error of its ways.

An iPad Pro with a new 3D system is coming in 2020, with AR headset and glasses to follow

%name An iPad Pro with a new 3D system is coming in 2020, with AR headset and glasses to follow by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

As rumors continue to swirl about Apple’s AR-based product roadmap covering the next few years, we’re learning that it will consist of even more devices than previously realized — something that’s probably to be expected, given that Apple has about 1,000 engineers working on all things AR and VR, according to a new Bloomberg report Monday afternoon.

While we reported earlier today that Apple is teeing up an AR headset to launch by 2022 and then a sleek pair of AR glasses to follow the year after that, it seems another product is lined up and headed for release early next year: An all-new iPad Pro with a new 3D sensor system. That system, among other things, would let users create 3D representations of rooms, objects, and people.
