Scientists spot sneaky squid spying on seafloor survey

Most of Earth is covered by oceans, and when you’re way up near the surface, the wildlife you spot is usually predictable. Dive down a bit and things start to change, and the deeper you go, the more bizarre the sights. By the time you reach the ocean floor, you might as well have traveled to an alien planet.

We’ve seen plenty of strange things thanks to scientific expeditions conducted by scientists using remotely-operated vehicles that explore the deep. In a recent posting by the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, one of those vehicles is seen scouring the seafloor for interesting sights, but it’s the creature lurking behind its back that is particularly interesting, and maybe a little frightening.

For the past several years, Facebook has been trying to convince users and authorities that it will take user data security and privacy more seriously. But then something happens that reminds everyone why they never trusted Facebook in the first place, and everything it says should be taken with a grain of salt.

Take the latest revelations about the company’s handling of user data from a few years ago. Emails that were just made public show that Facebook decided to stop providing companies it perceived as potential rivals access to user data, and then disguised it as a move that would improve user privacy on the network.

The next time many of you reading this upgrade your smartphone, it’s not likely you’ll choose one with a foldable form factor that manufacturers like Samsung are so keen to see become a mainstream product.

Indeed, Samsung’s launch of its first foldable smartphone this year, the Galaxy Fold, proved to be a bit of a mess, if we’re putting it mildly. Nevertheless, the South Korea-based consumer electronics giant is not giving up — and, in fact, is doubling down on foldables — to the degree that in 2020, the company is reportedly hopeful it can sell at least several million. That’s the ambition, at any rate.

As 2019 draws to a close, with the US ban against Huawei now having lasted around six months give or take, the company’s 75-year-old billionaire founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei has a message for everyone. He doesn’t expect the US to take Huawei off its blacklist anytime soon, and he’s now basically telling people — screw it, the US can be that way, see if I care. “They may as well keep us there forever because we’ll be fine without them,” Zhengfei railed in a new interview on Wednesday.

Astronauts who live on the International Space Station work hard. They don’t really have a choice in the matter since they live at the office. They conduct science experiments, work hand-in-hand with researchers back on Earth, and perform vital maintenance on the orbiting laboratory to ensure it continues to function as needed.

When they finally get some downtime, their options for leisure activities are slim, so you’d expect that a recent supply mission that delivered a dozen bottles of red wine would be a cause for celebration. Unfortunately for the high-flying scientists, they’re not allowed even a sip.

Somehow, AT&T customer service found a way to be even worse than Comcast

%name Somehow, AT&T customer service found a way to be even worse than Comcast by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Colorado’s Attorney General Phil Weiser has told both DirecTV and Comcast in letters sent to the companies that his office is investigating a practice that sounds so obviously sketchy that you’d think it would be a no-brainer to not do this. Both companies — with one important distinction between them — have been charging customers for blacked-out channels.

In AT&T’s case, with DirecTV, it’s got customers that have been charged for two months for a blacked-out sports channel. Comcast has charged customers in Colorado while the Altitude Sports network has been blacked out — but as Ars Technica noted in a post this week, at least it’s been automatically crediting customer bills there as a result of that blackout.

I love Nest thermostats. In fact, I have several of them in my house. That said, if I had it to do all over again I would probably opt for something different. Like most people, I actually don’t use most of Nest’s “learning” features which means I paid $250 each for thermostats that are underutilized. If you just want some basic smart features and the ability to control your thermostat from your phone or with Alexa, definitely check out the iDevices Wi-Fi enabled Smart Thermostat instead — especially while it’s on sale for just $65 instead of $100!

iDevices Thermostat – Wi-Fi enabled Smart Thermostat; Works With Alexa, Siri, the Google Assist…: $65.44

Here are the bullet points from the product page:

  • VOICE CONTROL: Responds to Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant voice commands (voice assistant devices sold separately)
  • ACCESS ANYWHERE: Control and monitor the iDevices Thermostat from anywhere using any iOS/Android device and the iDevices Connected app
  • COMPATIBILITY: Works with most heating and cooling systems; all systems require a 24VAC “Common” wire for power. All system types require a common wire (C-Wire). To check system and router compatibility, refer to iDevices support portal
  • NO HUB REQUIRED: With the iDevices Thermostat, a home Wi-Fi network and a smart phone/tablet are all that’s required to get started. For additional compatibility details, refer to the iDevices support portal
  • 2-YEAR WARRANTY: Backed by a 2-year limited warranty and U.S.-based customer experience team

The top 10 shows people are binge-watching right now on Netflix, Amazon, and TV

%name The top 10 shows people are binge watching right now on Netflix, Amazon, and TV by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

I didn’t really have any expectations when a friend recommended that I check out Atypical a while back. You can’t really go wrong with Michael Rapaport, but I hadn’t seen Jennifer Jason Leigh in anything in years and I had never even heard of Keir Gilchrist or Brigette Lundy-Paine. I also balked at the showrunner, Robia Rashid, who obviously has an impressive resume, but it consists entirely of TV shows that I don’t enjoy at all. My friend insisted though, so one evening about a week later, my wife and I sat down and checked it out. I don’t exactly how long it took us to binge-watch the first two seasons, but it couldn’t have been more than a week or so. We’re now about halfway through the new third season that was released on Netflix this past Friday, and it’s just as great as the first two seasons.

My wife and I clearly aren’t alone in loving the new season, because it shot straight to the top of this week’s list of the 10 most binged shows on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, TV, and more.
