Surprise: Apple haters couldn’t stop whining about the controversial iPhone 11 design, but now no one cares

%name Surprise: Apple haters couldn’t stop whining about the controversial iPhone 11 design, but now no one cares by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Back in 2017 before Apple’s new iPhone X was released, people were losing their minds over one particular design feature that had been repeatedly pictured in leaks. That’s right, we’re talking about the notch. Apple wasn’t the first smartphone maker to cut a chunk of out a smartphone screen; that honor goes to LG, which released a phone called the LG V10 back in 2015 that had a notch carved out of the top corner of its display. Then a small startup called Essential released a phone with a tiny notch in mid-2017, a few weeks before Apple’s iPhone X was announced. Neither of those phones was very popular though, whereas Apple’s iPhone X was the tenth-anniversary iPhone that featured Apple’s most significant redesign ever. People went crazy complaining about how ugly the notch was, and how disruptive it would be to the iPhone’s user experience. Heck, even I chimed in and wrote about how ugly the notch was before eating crow after the iPhone X was released. In fact, pretty much all the complaints about the iPhone X’s notch quickly faded away after the phone hit store shelves.

What made me and all these other people change our tune? It was pretty simple: the notch doesn’t matter. Once you start using a smartphone with a notch in the display, you stop noticing it almost instantly. It becomes just another feature of the phone’s design. The area at the top edge of the screen is really only useful for elements of the status bar anyway, and Apple just pushed them to either side of the notch so nothing important was even lost. That’s why all the whining and whingeing stopped so soon after people actually got the phone in their hands.

History repeated itself earlier this ahead of Apple’s big iPhone 11 series launch, with people screaming across all corners of the internet about one particular design feature. Now there’s nothing but silence, and no one is complaining that the upcoming iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max will have the same design feature. Why? Because just like the notch, it was a stupid thing to complain about in the first place.

One of the Galaxy S11’s most exciting new features was just teased

%name One of the Galaxy S11’s most exciting new features was just teased by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Samsung announced a 108-megapixel camera sensor for smartphones back in mid-August, the Isocell Bright HMX, which was design together with Xiaomi. That very sensor is now rumored to equip the Galaxy S11 phones next year, which would be a significant upgrade for the Galaxy S line, at least when it comes to megapixels. However, the first phone in the world to rock the 108-megapixel comes from Xiaomi, and the first samples are already here.

Google is trolling Nexus owners with a Pixel 4 deal that doesn’t even work

%name Google is trolling Nexus owners with a Pixel 4 deal that doesn’t even work by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The Pixel 4 is Google’s latest Android flagship, and like its predecessors, it’s far from perfect. The phone features a design that’s stuck in 2017 and launched with a few issues out of the gate that need software fixes. More disturbingly, it turns out the Pixel 4 can bend with relative ease, a problem that you can’t fix on your own. And the Pixel 4 does cost a pretty penny, in spite of all those issues. It’s even more expensive than the cheapest new iPhone, and that entry-level iPhone 11 is a lot faster than the Pixel when it comes to day-to-day performance. If you’ve been looking to upgrade your old Google hardware and trade it in for a Pixel, we’ve already told you that Google has a poor opinion of its previous Pixel versions compared to iPhones. If you happen to still rock a Nexus handset, then you’re seriously out of luck. Any Google ad that says you can get a tiny price cut on the Pixel 4 if you trade-in your Nexus phone is hilariously misleading, as Google won’t honor the deal.

People won’t stop asking the internet to diagnose their STDs

%name People won’t stop asking the internet to diagnose their STDs by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The internet is a magical place where you can find just about anything. Unfortunately for doctors, medical misinformation tends to spread across the internet just like everything else, and anonymous people on sites like Reddit don’t mind issuing medical advice despite having no expertise. A new study published in JAMA took a close look at the particularly troubling trend of STD “crowd-diagnosis.”

STDs are absolutely booming in the United States. Recent stats reveal that some STDs are reaching all-time highs, and hookup apps have been blamed for the spikes. On Reddit’s r/STD board, the number of people asking for STD advice from anonymous visitors is on the rise.

The arrival of Disney+ now exactly one week away.

For a variety of reasons, Disney’s new direct-to-consumer streaming product is shaping up to be the first major competition Netflix has had in a long while (maybe ever). And as a result of Disney’s aggressive marketing push, one study estimates the service already has more than 1 million subscribers pre-launch. Meanwhile, Disney is also teasing new details about the only show you absolutely must check out above all others on day 1. We’re talking, of course, about the new Star Wars series The Mandalorian.

Pixel 4 has a huge flaw that no software update is going to fix

%name Pixel 4 has a huge flaw that no software update is going to fix by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Google has started fixing the Pixel 4 with the help of software updates, which has become sort of an annoying tradition for the phone series. For the time being, Google solved the Smooth Display issue, and it still has to fix the 3D face unlock security lapse that lets you unlock the phone even when your eyes are closed. But it turns out the Pixel 4 has a massive flaw that no amount of software updates can fix. It bends.

Boeing’s Starliner falls short of perfection in launch abort test

%name Boeing’s Starliner falls short of perfection in launch abort test by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Boeing’s Starliner has seen many, many delays, cost overruns, and setbacks during its lengthy development. NASA is paying Boeing a fortune for its work on the crew-capable spacecraft, and it’s yet to see a return on that significant investment. On Monday, Boeing had a chance to show that the Starliner project was nearing the finish line with a launch abort test to demonstrate the capsule’s ability to keep the crew safe in the event of a serious failure during launch.

The spacecraft proved to be “acceptable,” according to NASA, but it wasn’t perfect. It managed to safely push itself away from the pad, which is exactly what it is designed to do, but one of its three parachutes failed to open during its descent.
