Apple is reportedly working with Valve on a totally new type of product like nothing we’ve seen

Every once in a while, some analysts claim that Apple has to develop brand new products to reduce its bottom line’s reliance on the success of the iPhone. But Apple only releases products that make sense in the grand scheme of things, and that scheme includes the iPhones. Apple proved in recent years that it has a plan in place for making up for lost iPhone sales, and all the brand new products it happened to have released during the period were intimately related to the iPhone. While it’s unreasonable to expect every new Apple product to redefine a business, it happened with the Apple Watch and with the AirPods, both wearable devices launched in the past five years. We had smartwatches and wireless headphones before these two hit stores, but both the Apple Watch and AirPods set the tone in the industry — and they were both made for the iPhone, although the AirPods work great with anything else. Nobody is really calling for Apple to enter a new product category, but the company might soon do it. Apple is rumored to release a brand new type of product, one that’s been starring in more and more rumors of its own. And the latest story claims that Apple might do something different this time around and partner with Valve, a well-known gaming company, on this device that’s supposed to work primarily with an iPhone.

With the holidays right around the corner, it’s as good a time as any to bust out the cookie cutters and get to work crafting some tasty treats. Nestle is easily one of the biggest names in cookies, and its Toll House cookie dough is incredibly popular. Unfortunately, if you happen to have some in your pantry, your cookie-baking plans may be delayed significantly.

In a new bulletin published today by the Food & Drug Administration, Nestle announces a voluntary recall of a whole bunch of its cookie dough products due to the potential for foreign matter contamination. More specifically, Nestle fears that its cookie dough might be tainted with rubber.

From the Galaxy Fold to a satellite crash-landing, Samsung’s had a godawful year

When Samsung reported its dismaying 52% plunge in third-quarter profit in recent days, the company — which is the largest producer of memory chips in the world — blamed the result on weakness in the market for memory chips. For Samsung, that weakness was part and parcel of the long, strange year that 2019 has been, which has included the US ban of Huawei products — prompting Huawei to (you guessed it) stock up on chips to fuel its own aggressive smartphone ambitions.

For Samsung, meanwhile, the quarter’s result was one more unfortunate reality to tally up among many others this year, with 2019 having produced a long string of embarrassing and regrettable gaffes and other bad headlines for the South Korea-based tech giant.

One of my favorite surprises on Netflix last year was the first season of The End of the F***ing World, which started as a graphic novel, was adapted for TV in the UK, and was then distributed internationally by Netflix. Much like Living With Yourself, it’s a propulsive show that never really lets up until the explosive finale. To be honest, I didn’t think that it needed another season, but I’m excited to see where the writers take it.

Some other highlights this week include District 9, a Seth Meyers stand-up comedy special, the fourth season of the She-Ra reboot, and more episodes of The Great British Baking Show, which I guess everyone loves.

Working in the criminal justice system isn’t easy, but the staff of the state’s attorney’s office in Chicago will be getting some special help from the office’s newest employee. The only problem is that they’ll have to remember to take her outside every six hours or so.

Hatty the Labrador was just sworn in for her new job and will reportedly work a regular 9-to-5 shift at the office. She won’t be asked to file paperwork or conduct investigations, but her work is nonetheless valuable; Hatty will spend her days comforting individuals who need support while they navigate what might be the most stressful time of their lives.

Woman found dead in a house with 140 snakes was seemingly strangled by a python

%name Woman found dead in a house with 140 snakes was seemingly strangled by a python by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

A 36-year-old woman in Oxford, Indiana, was recently found dead in a makeshift “snake sanctuary” that was home to 140 snakes. The victim, Laura Hurst, was found lifeless on the floor of the home with a reticulated python around her neck. It’s a bizarre story from top to bottom, and it starts with the home’s owner, who happens to be the local sheriff.

As the Journal & Courier reports, Benton County Sheriff Don Munson owns the home but doesn’t actually live there. He’s apparently a snake enthusiast and was (or perhaps still is) a snake breeder who sells the animals. Hurst is reported to have owned some of the snakes in the house, and Munson lives right next door.

D&D, which is what David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are referred to online, made the news twice in a matter of days. The Game of Thrones showrunners made some incredible comments at the Austin Film Festival a few days ago — comments that went viral online thanks to a Redditor who attended the panel, as the two producers practically confirmed they had no idea what they were doing with Game of Thrones.

Then, a few days later Benioff and Weiss announced their departure from Disney’s new Star Wars trilogy, which should have premiered in 2022. The reports that followed tied D&D’s decision to exit the Disney deal with the poor performance of final season Game of Thrones. Some people went as far as to say that the atrocious season finale of Game of Thrones was what sealed their fates when it comes to Star Wars.

It’s fair to say the early reviews of Apple’s first foray into the world of original TV content have not been kind. Right out of the gate, outlets like Variety and The Hollywood Reporter excoriated the launch-day slate of shows, though that’s not to say that positive coverage has been non-existent. Vanity Fair in a report Friday described Dickinson as Apple’s “wildest, most fascinating show,” while Polygon had this to say about Apple’s Jason Mamoa-led See: “Apple’s See has the worldbuilding to satisfy Game of Thrones fans”.

All that said, Apple TV+ has officially launched as of Friday and marked Apple’s formal entrance onto the battlefield of the streaming wars. Meanwhile, there’s one constituency that hasn’t been heard from yet in the initial coverage of Apple’s new streaming service: Actual users.
