Study confirms that, yes, a nuclear war between the US and Russia would be the end of days

It might sound silly to think that a nuclear war between the United States and Russia would be anything but the apocalypse, but for scientists studying climate and atmosphere, the changes such a conflict could bring to our planet are a worthy subject of study.

Now, a new paper published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres corroborates decade-old estimates and confirms that if the U.S. and Russia started throwing nukes around, nuclear winter would indeed follow. The study stops short of declaring a nuclear war the end of mankind, but given the study’s findings, it certainly seems like the writing is on the wall.

NASA’s Spitzer reveals surface conditions of distant exoplanet

%name NASA’s Spitzer reveals surface conditions of distant exoplanet by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The hunt for exoplanets has ramped up in recent years as advancing telescope technology is allowing scientists to spot the telltale signs of planets orbiting distant stars. Astronomers are finding new planets at a faster rate than ever before, but there’s a big difference between knowing these alien worlds exist and knowing what conditions might be like on their surfaces.

In a new study published in Nature, researchers using data from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope reveal a rare glimpse at the surface of one particular exoplanet. The world, called LHS 3844b, resides less than 50 light-years from Earth and is slightly larger than our planet. Its surface, however, is a lot less hospitable than that of Earth.

Would you pay Netflix pricing for Apple TV+? That’s what Apple’s leaning toward

%name Would you pay Netflix pricing for Apple TV+? That’s what Apple’s leaning toward  by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

On the same day that Apple decided to release a trailer for what will be one of the higher-profile shows launching soon via its Apple TV+ service (The Morning Show), the price Apple is reportedly weighing for its forthcoming Netflix rival has also been revealed: $9.99 per month.

That’s according to a Bloomberg report published late Monday, which helps fill in some of the remaining gaps in our understanding of the iPhone maker’s streaming TV ambitions. As we said, the company is apparently leaning toward Netflix-style pricing for the service (Netflix’s base plan, for comparison, costs $8.99 per month), though it will have only a tiny fraction of the latter’s library at launch.

Google quietly killed a service that used Android phone data to help mobile carriers improve their networks

%name Google quietly killed a service that used Android phone data to help mobile carriers improve their networks by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Google may have never told you that it stopped sharing data from your Android devices with your mobile service providers months ago, just like it didn’t tell you when it started sharing that data in the first place.

Reuters reports that Google provided anonymized, aggregated data about signal strength and connection speeds to carriers. In turn, the operators could use the data to detect weak spots in their networks and perform upgrades and improvements. It sounds great on paper, and like something everyone could benefit from. Customers would get better service, carriers would be able to provide better service, and Google would have more Android users surfing the web at faster speeds on their devices. What’s not to like?

%name Prediction: Netflix will confirm ‘Stranger Things 4’ by the end of August by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In the weeks since Stranger Things 3 premiered on Netflix back on July 4, the internet has been awash in theories and predictions about both what happened — Hopper! (sob) — and what will happen next. They range from the possibility that Eleven will be the bad guy in the upcoming season, as we’ve seen many people speculate, and whether the series will move outside the town of Hawkins for the first time.

Meanwhile, here’s another prediction to have some fun with — a guess for when Netflix will get around to actually, you know, confirming the existence of the next season everyone is already speculating about.

%name Disney+ will support each of these platforms and devices at launch by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

We’re just a few months out from the launch of the Disney+ streaming service, which might be the most dangerous threat to Netflix’s supremacy to date. In addition to featuring every Disney and Pixar animated movie ever made, the service will also be home to the Star Wars and Marvel franchises, as well as original TV shows set in those fictional universes. And as of today, we know all of the devices and platforms that Disney+ will support.

In a press release, Disney confirmed that Disney+ will launch in Canada and the Netherlands on November 12th — the same day as the US — “priced at $8.99CAD per month (or $89.99 per year) and €6.99 per month (or €69.99 per year), respectively.” The service will then hit Australia and New Zealand on November 19th, “priced at $8.99AUD per month (or $89.99 per year) and $9.99NZD per month (or $99.99 per year), respectively.”

Tests show carriers throttle video playback all the time, regardless of network congestion

%name Tests show carriers throttle video playback all the time, regardless of network congestion by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Carriers have a nasty habit of throttling video playback on mobile devices to avoid network congestion. You might hate it, but it has to happen, according to them, for the good of everyone using devices on said network. But a brand new study shows these operators will slow down video even when there’s no congestion.

NASA needs your help to deliver cargo to its lunar Gateway

%name NASA needs your help to deliver cargo to its lunar Gateway by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

NASA is inching closer to its return to the Moon, but its push to send crewed missions to the lunar surface is really just the start of a much larger initiative. A space station orbiting the Moon, which NASA calls the Gateway, will ultimately serve as a jumping-off point for crewed trips to the Moon’s surface and eventually Mars, and NASA needs your help to ensure it remains stocked with supplies.

The space agency just sent out a request for proposals from American companies to come up with solutions for sending cargo, scientific gear, and various miscellaneous supplies to the Gateway.
