Researchers at the Black Hat security conference this week highlighted an interesting, and somewhat impractical, way to fool Apple’s Face ID. Originally introduced with the iPhone X, Face ID does an impressive job of only allowing authorized users to access a particular device. All the same, Face ID isn’t entirely fool-proof.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen a few demonstrations which illustrate how Face ID can sometimes be fooled by twins or even siblings who bear a close resemblance. There have even been stories of researchers using 3D-printed plaster masks to fool the software.

MoviePass changed passwords to lock out users once it ran out of sane ideas

%name MoviePass changed passwords to lock out users once it ran out of sane ideas by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Back in the summer of 2018, the beleaguered movie ticket app MoviePass was attracting a firestorm of complaints from users who were unable to use the app (for which they were paying $10 a month to see one film per day) to buy tickets for some new blockbusters, like Mission: Impossible — Fallout. “As we continue to evolve the service,” CEO Mitch Lowe said at the time, in a statement released to tamp down some of the complaints, “certain movies may not always be available in every theater on our platform. This is no different than other in-home streaming options that often don’t carry the latest shows or movies that may be available on other services.”

What MoviePass was also doing behind the scenes, though, and which was different from pretty much every other company not drowning in a dumpster fire of poor decisions, is something that’s only just now come to light.

Amazon Echo devices are assembled by teenagers forced to work overtime hours

%name Amazon Echo devices are assembled by teenagers forced to work overtime hours by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In a scathing report that shouldn’t shock anyone, a new expose from China Labor Watch reveals that a Foxconn-owned factory has been employing upwards of 1,500 teenagers (aged 16-18) as interns. Their task? Making speakers for Amazon.

While there’s nothing necessarily wrong with a teenager working an internship in and of itself, the report details how the teens routinely work 10-hour days and are often encouraged to work overtime. It’s worth noting that young interns in China, by law, are not allowed to work at night or overtime hours. Incidentally, the interns in question here are sent by nearby schools and technical colleges.

The Solstice of Heroes event underscores the best and worst elements of ‘Destiny 2’

%name The Solstice of Heroes event underscores the best and worst elements of ‘Destiny 2’ by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

With a new Destiny 2 expansion, Shadowkeep, just around the corner, I am diving back into the grindy first-person shooter for the first time in months. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself utterly engaged in the game after being away for so long, catching up on all the story missions I had yet to complete and building up my Light level with new armor and weapons. In fact, Destiny 2 has managed to hold my interest for over a month now, which is longer than I’ve ever played either this game or its predecessor after the initial launch period.

Even better, just as I began to feel myself falling into the familiar loop of checking off the boxes of daily challenges to inch my Light level a smidge higher than it was the day before, a sweeping new event came to the world of Destiny 2. As Bungie explains, the Solstice of Heroes is “a tradition in which Guardians reflect on past hardships and celebrate the resilience of humanity’s foremost defenders.” But really it’s just an excuse to get more loot.

Downed power line turns Ohio intersection into an inferno

None of us spare much thought for the power lines looming over our heads as we cruise down the streets of Anytown, USA, but drivers in Sandusky, Ohio, were reminded this week of how much power if flowing through those unassuming black cables. A storm severely damaged some power lines and brought traffic to a screeching halt by showering a busy intersection in sparks and flames.

Video of the incident, which was captured by a police cruiser, shows an initial burst of electricity lighting up the sky and startling drivers. A short while later, things got even more intense as the damaged lines sent sparks cascading onto the wet pavement below.
