I was poking around the other day for something new to watch on Netflix that I hadn’t seen before, and I came across a series from Norway I hadn’t heard of that looked to be a Vikings-era comedy that Netflix was recommending I check out. It’s called Norsemen and I thought it was reasonably funny, but it wasn’t clear until today how this show, which I certainly hadn’t previously been aware of, came to be among the list of recommended titles showing up for me.

Long story short: Norsemen showrunner Anders Tangen seems to have figured out a brilliant hack for getting Netflix’s recommendation algorithm to pick up his series. Here’s how he did it.

NASA fires up Orion’s engines for critical test

%name NASA fires up Orion’s engines for critical test by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

NASA is sending humans back to the Moon. Nobody knows for sure whether that will happen in 2024 or a somewhat later date, but it’s definitely happening in the near future. When those important missions finally launch, the Orion service module will play a big role, and NASA just conducted a very important test to ensure the spacecraft’s engines are up to the task.

The 12-minute-long test saw the module’s engines fire continuously to simulate a scenario in which a rocket launch fails to push Orion with enough force to make it to the Moon. Orion’s engines would be used to allow the spacecraft to enter a safe orbit around Earth while NASA can decide how to proceed.

Months of obfuscation, mixed signals, and carefully worded non-denials have led Huawei, finally, to this weekend, when the company that’s been the target of a US ban since May appears ready to show off the custom smartphone operating system it’s been working on as an Android backup. The expected reveal will happen at this weekend’s Huawei developer conference, ahead of which comes the rumor of which Huawei handset will be the first to get its new HongMeng mobile OS.

It’s looking like that phone will be the Mate 30 Lite, with Huawei rumored to be prepping an Android version for Europe and international markets and another for the Chinese market.

It took an incredibly long time for the Earth’s poles to flip

If you’re looking for some kind of apocalyptic scenario to get anxious about, the Earth’s poles flipping is as good a nightmare as any. Scientists know that our planet’s poles have indeed flipped in the past, but how long it took for that to happen has long been a topic of debate.

Cheesy sci-fi movies depict the magnetic field shift as happening virtually overnight, and while researchers know that’s not the case it’s still hard to pin down an estimate. Now, a new study from researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison suggests that a pole flip which occurred around 770,000 years ago took tens of thousands of years to finish once it began.

This Nintendo Switch portable dock solves one of the console’s biggest issues

%name This Nintendo Switch portable dock solves one of the console’s biggest issues by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The Nintendo Switch has been a critical and financial success in the two years since it launched, but it’s not a perfect product. Fixing these issues wouldn’t exactly be a Herculean task though, as a clever Kickstarter project from a group called Human Things goes to show. The group is making a portable dock for the Switch that is a fraction of the size of the dock that ships with the console, and yet does everything Nintendo’s dock can do.

As Human Things explains on Kickstarter, the Genki Covert Dock is really just a charging brick for Switch that doubles as a dock. In order to use the dock with your Switch, all you have to do is plug it into an outlet, connect it to a Switch with a USB-C cord, and then connect it to a television with an HDMI cord. Then you’re set.

Google researcher details iOS exploit that can take over an iPhone with a text message

%name Google researcher details iOS exploit that can take over an iPhone with a text message by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

As a general rule, if you avoid clicking on suspicious links that might pop on your phone — whether they’re sent via text message or appear as an in-browser pop-up ad — the odds of your device becoming infected with malware is slim to none.

That notwithstanding, security researchers from Google’s Project Zero team recently divulged a sophisticated exploit that would allow a malicious actor to take control of a targeted device with no interaction required from the device owner at all. As Google researcher Natalie Silvanovich detailed during a presentation at the Black Hat security conference this week, there are a handful of iOS 12 exploits — which have since been patched by Apple with iOS 12.4 — that can let a third-party gain full control of a device simply by sending over a text message.

New study paints a dire picture for football players, even when concussions are avoided

The NFL and college football have come under fire in recent years due to the mounting scientific evidence that shows the damage that can be caused by simply playing the game. Everyone knows that concussions are bad, but repeated impacts to the head that aren’t severe enough to cause a concussion can be serious as well, and a new study shows that even a single season can significantly alter brain matter.

The study, which was published in Science Advances, was conducted by researchers at the University of Rochester who tracked the brain health of nearly 40 of the school’s football players. Equipped with special helmets to monitor impacts, the data shows dramatic changes in the brain even when players can avoid serious concussions.
