• NASA is celebrating Hubble’s 30th birthday with a breathtaking image of a distant pair of nebulas.
• The image, which has been nicknamed “the Cosmic Reef” captures two nebulas in the star-forming region of space called the Large Magellanic Cloud, which is located around 163,000 light-years from Earth.
• NASA and the European Space Agency hope to keep Hubble up and running for some time yet, perhaps even another decade or longer.

The Hubble Space Telescope is NASA’s workhorse. It was launched way back in 1990 and despite a few hiccups along the way, it’s still going strong in the year 2020. NASA is incredibly proud of all the work it has done and has been working up to the spacecraft’s birthday with some fun retrospectives throughout the month.

Now, on the telescope’s official birthday, April 24th, NASA is showcasing one of its latest images, and it’s definitely a candidate for the most impressive photo Hubble has ever captured. The picture features two nebulas, NGC 2014 and NGC 2020, hanging out in the Large Magellanic Cloud some 163,000 light-years away.

• Not long after the IRS launched a web portal to let Americans check the status of their stimulus payment, an Oregon tenant was allegedly contacted by his landlord asking if he was going to use the money that he had received to pay rent.
• The discussion between the tenant and the landlord shows that the landlord checked on the status of the tenant’s payment by using their SSN and other information they had on hand.

• The maker of Lysol issued an official statement that the chemical products that can kill the novel coronavirus on surfaces aren’t supposed to be ingested.
• The statement comes in response to Trump’s most recent comments about killing the coronavirus with light or with an injection of some sort of disinfectant.
• The comments were made after a presentation that explained new research about the survivability of the virus in various conditions.

“I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute, one minute,” a middle-aged man said on TV on Thursday, and then he wondered whether there’s a way “we can do something like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning” to get rid of the novel coronavirus. “As you see, it gets in the lungs, it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it would be interesting to check that.” Anyone is free to wonder aloud about anything, the COVID-19 health crisis included. But if you’re the most powerful leader in the world and say those things on TV, it might be very dangerous. There are people who already think that bleach can cure COVID-19, just as some attempted to prevent being infected by taking a drug that sounded like the one Trump advertised on TV.

Trump’s remark above followed a similar comment about exposing the body to light or bringing light inside, “which you can do either through the skin or in some other way,” to kill the virus. This happened after Bill Bryan, head of the Department of Homeland Security’s science and technology division, presented various new discoveries about the coronavirus’s viability in various conditions. But Trump’s twisting of said presentation prompted a huge reaction online. That’s why hashtags like #InjectDisinfectant and #TidePodPresident trended on Twitter on Friday. And that’s what prompted the maker of Lysol to warn buyers not to drink disinfectant.

• One of the most-watched shows on Netflix right now is Money Heist, a Spanish-language series about a group of criminals that just debuted its fourth season.

Lately, I’ve found myself reaching for Netflix fare that’s off the beaten path — not the buzziest stuff like Tiger King or Too Hot to Handle that the Internet seems to love right now and more along the lines of shows like Money Heist and the streamer’s growing pile of Korean dramas. I suspect it has to do with scratching an itch related to being unable to travel right now because of the coronavirus pandemic, and watching programming from around the world in a way at least lets your mind travel when your body can’t.

For example, that’s also the reason I just finished catching up on the latest batch of Terrace House that got added to Netflix a few weeks ago — Terrace House, being a super-popular Japanese reality show that’s a co-production between Netflix and Fuji TV. In it, a group of six strangers (three men and three women) live together, but unlike the dynamics that would unfold in an Americanized version of this drama, the tenants are all nice to each other for the most part, the fall in love (usually in a largely chaste fashion) go on dates, go to work, and help each other pursue their ambitions in life. And that’s pretty much it. It can make for a pretty zen watching experience and is definitely unlike anything you’d find in the US, that’s for sure.

A lack of rapid coronavirus testing is still a major problem in many countries, including areas of the United States. Getting the tests and testing supplies has been a chore for doctors for a number of reasons, but a new paper published in the Journal of Molecular Diagnostics suggests that a new method of testing could result in faster tests and greater testing capacity.

Led by Jin-Soo Maeng, Ph.D. at the Center for Convergent Research of Emerging Virus Infection at the Korean Food Research Institute, the team of scientists developed a test that is more efficient in confirming the presence of the novel coronavirus. The tests can detect as few as 100 copies of the novel coronavirus RNA.

• Messenger Room is Facebook’s response to the popular video chat app Zoom, which saw its usage spike during the coronavirus health crisis.

The only way to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus is to adhere to a specific set of rules. You have to wash your hands often and disinfect surfaces, and you have to reduce contact with other people. Even then, you’re advised to use a face mask of some sort and use sanitizer when in public. These severe social distancing measures have cost millions of people their jobs. Others are luckier and can work or go to school from home.

The internet, combined with video calling apps and instant messengers, makes it far more comfortable to work or study from home. Apps like Zoom are killing it right now, despite the many privacy and security worries that were unearthed in previous weeks. Unsurprisingly, if an app that has a social component becomes popular for any reason, Facebook will be right there to try to replicate its features as well as its success. And Facebook is doing exactly that with Zoom, as it lines up its own competitor for the popular video calling application.

• A new text message crash bug for Apple devices has been going viral this week.
• Similar to the Telugu bug from 2018, the text string features unique characters that can cause the iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch to crash upon receiving a notification with it present.
• Apple has yet to respond or issue a fix, but the bug doesn’t work on the latest iOS beta.

Over the years, we’ve reported on a number of text message bugs capable of crashing iPhones and iPads. Way back in 2015, the so-called “effective power” bug was able to crash iOS devices when a text was received while a user was anywhere other than the Messages app. Three years later, a specific Telugu character was used to crash a variety of messaging apps. The only way to get back into the app was to access the service from a different device and delete the message with the character, as it would repeatedly crash the iOS app while present.

Now, in the middle of a global pandemic, yet another one of these weird bugs has arisen. As 9to5Mac explains, if you receive the text string in a notification on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or even Apple Watch, you may begin to experience some issues. This can include crashes and the device failing to respond to touch inputs.

• An observational hydroxychloroquine study from New York revealed the drug failed to show any promise on COVID-19 patients experiencing severe symptoms.

More than four months after the emergence of the novel coronavirus, the world is still stuck mostly indoors as it looks to reduce the spread of the virus and prevent medical systems from collapsing. We still don’t have a drug that works against COVID-19 or a vaccine, but that’s because we’re only getting started. A vaccine will likely be ready for mass inoculations in 12 to 18 months. Before that happens, we’ll also know whether any of the promising COVID-19 treatments that you’ve heard about on TV actually work. New results are already here for two of these promising drugs, but neither shows any promise. The good news is that they’re not definitive and more research is required on both hydroxychloroquine and remdesivir.
