Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the dining rooms of restaurants around the country, by and large, remain closed right now as states and cities encourage social distancing. Those eateries can still offer takeout and food delivery options, however.
With that in mind, Wendy’s is launching a free food deal on Friday, April 24, to help spread a little bit of good cheer at this stressful and depressing time: Free chicken nuggets for everyone who comes through the drive-thru, no purchase required.

The Wendy’s fast-food chain is launching a promotion on Friday, April 24, that springs from its belief that there’s never a bad day, really, to launch a free food deal — and that everyone could really use a group hug right now, given the state of the world.

Instead of a group hug, though, Wendy’s has decided to offer everyone around the country (apologies for the bad pun) “groupnugs” (their word, not mine). Nationwide, Wendy’s will be giving away a free 4-piece order of Chicken Nuggets, either crispy or spicy, to every car that comes through its drive-thrus, with no purchase necessary. Digital food delivery orders don’t count, though — you actually have to come through the drive-thru yourself for this offer, since the dining room at Wendy’s and pretty much every kind of eatery is temporarily shut down right now.

Netflix is losing 33 movies and shows from its streaming service in May 2020.
Every season of Scandal and Royal Pains will be missing from Netflix by the end of the month.
Netflix is also losing a few blockbuster movies, such as Limitless and the Austin Powers trilogy.

These always end up going one of two ways. Either there’s so much quality content being removed from Netflix that I struggle to whittle down my list to just ten movies and TV shows, or there is so little leaving that I struggle to come up with even ten movies or shows worth recommending. The month of May falls under the latter scenario, as there isn’t much notable content departing from the streaming service in the coming weeks.

Unfortunately, even when the selection is a bit thin, there are always still a few tough losses, and I know there will be plenty of people who are sad to see all seven seasons of Shoda Rhimes’s Scandal vanish from Netflix. Starring Kerry Washington as Olivia Pope, the series aired on ABC from 2012 to 2018, winning multiple awards in its early seasons, including two Emmys. And speaking of popular, long-running shows, USA Network procedural dramedy Royal Pains is ending its tenure on Netflix too, taking all 104 episodes along with it.

Coronavirus survivors keep testing positive after recovery, puzzling physicians.
Some patients have retested positive 70 days after the original infections, and doctors are struggling to find an explanation or a cure.
It’s unclear whether they’re contagious or whether they’ve been infected a second time. Some are showing symptoms, while others aren’t.

An increasing number of reports indicate that some novel coronavirus survivors can test positive again several days after being discharged from hospitals. Some of them have been showing mild symptoms in Korea, but authorities can’t explain what’s actually happening. We’ve seen such reports from China over the past few weeks, with patients having been isolated for a second time upon retesting positive.

It turns out that some people can carry the virus for months after being declared cured, according to a new report. Authorities are scrambling to understand whether a patient who keeps testing positive after recovery is infectious to others, and some are considering new discharge protocols as a result.

NASA and the USGS partnered up to create the most detailed map of the Moon ever.
The map, which is available online, color-codes craters and other geographical features, showing all of the tiny features that make up the lunar surface.

When we gaze up at Earth’s moon in the night sky we can see it’s covered in a pattern that’s become familiar to all of us. Because the Moon is tidally locked to our planet, we only see one of its faces, and that face, with all its shadowy splotches and bright areas, is iconic.

Now, in an incredible first, NASA and the USGS have teamed up to produce a Moon map unlike any other. It shows us exactly where all those dark and light areas came from, and serves as a visual catalog of the many impacts Earth’s tiny neighbor has endured over the years.

The FCC has voted on new rules that will support faster, more reliable Wi-Fi service for most of us by clearing a path in support of the next generation of Wi-Fi, which is known as Wi-Fi 6.

At a time when more Americans than ever are working from home and relying on fast, stable internet connectivity for the jobs, as well as to consume news and entertainment, an FCC vote Thursday amounts to the biggest change in Wi-Fi since the late 1980s.

Specifically, the agency voted on rules to make 1,200 megahertz of spectrum in the 6GHz band available for unlicensed use — rules that now usher in the adoption of Wi-Fi 6 to support the next generation of W-Fi in the latest mobile devices as well as within the internet of Things. According to the agency, Wi-Fi 6 will be more than 2.5x faster than the current Wi-Fi standard and increases the amount of spectrum by almost a factor of five which should also help improve connectivity in rural areas.

Microsoft spent the first half of March sharing details about the Xbox Series X we’d been waiting months for, but in the weeks since, the company has gone dark. Other than the surreptitious reveal of the console’s logo on Wednesday, we haven’t learned much more about the next Xbox lately, but recent interviews conducted by Windows Central provide some interesting context about the features that Microsoft announced last month.

NASA’s Mars 2020 mission launch date is rapidly approaching, and we’ve seen all the signs that the Perseverance rover is just about ready to make the long journey to the Red Planet. What will it find when it arrives? That’s a question nobody can answer, but new research by scientists at Stanford suggests that the rover’s targeted landing site may be a great place to look for signs of life.

NASA chose the rover’s landing location — a large bowl-shaped depression known as the Jezero crater — because it’s located in an area where ancient martian rivers flowed, carving channels and depositing sediment into layers. This is ideal for scientists hunting for signatures of life as it offers the opportunity to study material that was on the surface over a long period of time.

New York tested 3,000 people to see if they had the antibodies that indicate they have been infected with the coronavirus and have since recovered.
Over 13% of New Yorkers tested positive, which means up to 2.7 million people in the state of New York may have already had COVID-19.
The numbers are highest in NYC, where 21.2% tested positive.

Like many other mayors, governors, and elected officials, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has held briefings on a daily basis to offer updates on the state’s coronavirus pandemic response. Not long ago, he announced that New York would be conducting a study in order to determine how many people in the state have been infected, which cannot be determined with the data the state has collected so far. Many people who contract the virus recover at home. Some never show any symptoms at all, and likely don’t know they were infected in the first place.

With that in mind, New York started testing people out and about across the entire state, in grocery stores and other locations that are still open during the shutdown, to see if they tested positive for a blood marker that would indicate they had been infected. Over 3,000 of these tests were conducted in 19 counties and 40 localities, and of everyone who received the test, 13.9% had the antibodies that show they recovered from COVID-19.

As state and local public officials and health experts, along with the Trump administration at the federal level, work through the details of how they’ll go about reopening the country in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, a new model shows what the effect will be of relaxing social distancing guidelines around the country starting in May.
From the PolicyLab at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, this tool shows what will happen at the county level around the country if social distancing guidelines are relaxed 50% starting May 15 (hint: it’s not good).

One of the hardest decisions to make in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak for states and cities around the country was the decision to effectively put themselves into an economic coma for an indefinite period of time — forcing people to mostly stay at home, except for trips to essential businesses like banks and grocery stores or to pick up food-to-go. With a snap of the fingers, in the form of orders from mayors and governors, ordinary life ground to a halt around the country, in a way that most Americans probably never could have conceived of being a possibility, let alone actually coming to pass.

But after several weeks of this, and more than a month of closures and lockdowns in many parts of the country, we’re now at a new and perhaps even more dangerous phase of the country’s response to the coronavirus. We’re starting to see the states and cities that want to be at the vanguard of opening back up again, amid protests that this whole thing is taking too long and warnings from public health experts that we’re not actually out of the woods yet and that reopening now is too dangerous.
