Rain, racing, crashes, delays, and more rain. That’s a quick sum up of the 2014 Honda Indy Toronto that took place this weekend at the Exhibition Place near downtown Toronto. It wasn’t all bad though, as the heavy rain only started coming down late Saturday, and early morning on Sunday. Indy lights, Porsche GT, Formula 1600, Pirelli World Challenge, and Stadium Super Truck races all went smoothly up until mother nature decided to soak the track and drastically change road conditions to challenge drivers, and confuse track officials… READ MORE

Here at Autoblog Canada we often drive the latest new cars, but to be honest, we will always make time to appreciate the classics out there. The Nissan Skyline was a performance staple in its native Japan for nearly 20 years before the company finally unveiled the GT-R to the world in 2008. For most North Americans, the R35 is all they know and have never had the opportunity to experience some of the legacy models like the: R32, R33 and highly advanced R34. However, the annual Skymeet event held in Toronto each summer draws in record numbers of them from across the country.

Here in Canada, our vehicle importation laws allow any vehicle 15 years old (or older) to be easily brought in. And when late 2004 came around, the 1989 Nissan Skyline GT-R was eligible and ships carrying them started flowing into western ports. As the most winning GT race car of all time, the R32 was the dream of those fascinated with its 29 consecutive race wins, spanning four straight seasons of Japan touring car series. With a 280 hp 2.6L twin turbo inline-6, all-wheel steering and intelligent all-wheel drive, the featherweight chassis was lightyears ahead of other street cars and totally dominated in race trim.

Enthusiasts also imported other Skylines including the RWD, single turbo GTS-T and the 4-door GTS-4 but often swap in the more potent RB26DETT mill to push them. More recently, the R33 GT-R has become a more common sight, with the holy grail of the lineup still being the R34 GT-R, which will be eligible for import this year in late 2014.

Skymeet 2014 brought out many Skylines from different provinces for a day of sun, food and awards. Click here to check out our full photo gallery from the team at AMS Motorsports who photographed most of these nearly quarter century classics for us to share with all of you.

We love a good deal on high performance. It’s what traditionally makes muscle cars so damn appealing – you get lots of speed, for not a lot of money. For 2015, Dodge has taken this to its logical extreme, offering its new 707-horsepower, supercharged, V8-powered Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat starting at just $63,995 in Canada!

To put that in perspective, the soon-to-be-discontinued 662-hp Mustang GT500 starts at $61,699 in Canada, while the 580-hp Camaro ZL1 coupe kicks off at $54,775. Indeed, the only muscle car that could outprice the $63,995 Hellcat in Canada is the track-focused Camaro Z/28, a car that we’re guessing could still wallop the Hellcat on the right piece of track, despite being down over 200 horsepower.

We’ll have much more on the 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat in the coming days and weeks. Stay tuned.

Magnum Releases New Gaskets for Popular Class 3 to Class 8 Diesel Truck Engines

Magnum Gaskets (an MSI brand) has expanded its product offering beyond applications for traditional passenger cars and light-duty trucks, making inroads into the pickup truck diesel, heavy-duty diesel and high-performance vehicle segments.

“MSI is one of the few companies in the world with the huge molding presses required to successfully manufacture the large format, complex gaskets found on today’s diesel engines,” said Alex Grunfeld, president at MSI.

Magnum has released more than 100 new, individually boxed medium- and heavy-duty gaskets and seals for popular Class 3 to Class 8 diesel truck engines, covering Navistar DT466, Caterpillar C7-C15, Detroit Diesel Series 60 and a range of Cummins engines. Magnum’s aftermarket e-Catalog features manifold, valve cover and oil pan gasket sets for pickup truck diesel applications, including GM Duramax V8, Ford Powerstroke V8 and Dodge/Ram/Cummins B Series.

“In high-performance, our gasket engineers have many years of personal experience in street and race engine build-ups,” added Derek Data, vice president at MSI.

One of the new problem-solving products from Magnum Performance is a one-piece molded oil pan gasket (OS84003) for big block Chevy’s that has the side rails trimmed for stroker clearance.

According to MSI, MOPAR fans will appreciate two new 440 molded oil pan gaskets with integral molded plastic windage trays, offered in either a standard depth sump version (OS84011) or with a deep sump (OS84012) for stroker motors. Another Magnum innovation for Chrysler 440s is SP93120 rear main bearing side seals featuring molded silicone rubber on a rigid plastic core for easy installation.

Ford auctioning off F-35-themed 2015 Mustang for charity

2015 mustang 35 airventure Ford auctioning off F 35 themed 2015 Mustang for charity by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Filed under:

Ford’s been a supporter of EAA AirVenture, a huge, annual air show held in Oshkosh, WI, for several years now, with one of its most notable contributions being a modified Ford Mustang, designed to look like one of America’s great fighting aircraft. There was an SR-71 Mustang, based on the legendary spy plane, a Red Tails edition, which honoured the ground-breaking Tuskegee Airmen of World War II, as well as Blue Angels and Thunderbird Mustangs, based on two great military aerial demonstration teams.

Each car is auctioned off, with all proceeds going to the EAA Young Eagles program, which introduces kids to the joy of flight. For the 2014 AirVenture, which runs from July 28 to August 3, the one-off pony car is based on the new-for-2015 Mustang, and one of the latest fighting aircraft – the controversial F-35 Lightning II.

The unique Mustang sports titanium paint scheme, with both glossy and matte sections, as well as yellow-and-blue trim and decal elements inspired by CF-1, the first F-35 test plane. A carbon-fibre front splitter and rear diffuser add some visual eye candy, while the interior boasts a set of Recaro seats. Ford also opted to fit unique wheels and a brawnier rear spoiler, to tie everything together.

Considering previous versions of the custom Mustang crossed the block for as much as $400,000, there’s little reason to think that this latest example, based on the eagerly anticipated sixth-generation Mustang, will be a cheap buy. The fighter-jet-inspired muscle car will be auctioned off at the Gathering of Eagles charity event, on July 31.

HIGHLIGHTS: Italian Car Day 2014 kicks off with rare exotics and supercars

Italian Car Day 2014 is widely considered the largest gathering of Italian supercars in Canada. The annual event known as Italian Car Day 2014 took place at the Boyd Conservation Park (near Toronto, ON) proving once again that this popular event can deliver an impressive roster of exotics and classics from Italy, while also celebrating the culture of Italian heritage, food, and music as well. Nestled in the heart of Vaughan, Ontario the region is home to many Ital-Canadians and the Boyd Conservation Park venue couldn’t have been better suited for showcasing makes like: Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, FIAT, DeTomaso, Piaggio, Ducati and more.

While the benefit of the show for attendees is obvious (read: automotive eye candy) the collateral benefit is for Charity. The crowds were treated to quite a bit for the low $6.50 park admission price, too, including: live entertainment, authentic Italian food like: porchetta, pizza, veal and gelato but the big draw was naturally the ridiculous amounts of gorgeous Italian exotics and timeless classics.

Click here for our full photo gallery, as we teamed up with our long-time exotic car tuning friends at AMS Motorsports, Saturn Drives, and event organizers of Italian Car Day 2014. If you liked this event, be sure to also check out our coverage from the annual exotic car meet in Yorkville and the previous Italian Car Day galleries below.

How our outlandish price expectations threaten the auto industry

carimpound How our outlandish price expectations threaten the auto industry by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

One of the most common misconceptions among car buyers, it seems, is that cars cost more than they are worth. What’s even more common is the assumption that car dealers are ruthless sneaky people whose sole purpose it is to prey on clueless consumers. This assumption is not a commonplace occurrence.

According to a recent online survey conducted by JD Power, 36% of customers believe that car dealers in Canada make more than $3,000 per new vehicle sold. About 26% believe that the said amount is between $1,500 and $3,000. Believe it or not, both of those estimates are dead wrong. According to JD Power and Associates’ Power Information Network, the actual number is $1,161 in Canada. This means that there is a significant chunk of consumers who overestimate a car dealer’s profit.

While this may seem like not a big deal, I would argue that this sort of mentality is harmful to the auto industry as a whole. It’s harmful to the manufacturers, the dealers, and at the end of the day, it’s harmful to the consumer. Why? Click here to read more and find out.
