Cometic MLS Head Gaskets

mls1 m Cometic MLS Head Gaskets by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

MLS (Multi-Layer Steel) Head Gaskets provide maximum sealing performance for today’s high output engines and require no sealants. MLS gaskets are ideal for both aluminum heads to aluminum blocks and aluminum heads to cast iron blocks. They can withstand the shearing force created by the two materials. MLS gaskets have increased strength because they are comprised of multiple layers of stainless steel; which also creates the ability to rebound and resist corrosion.

The outer layers are embossed and coated on both sides with Viton (a flouroelastomer rubber based material that is heat resistant to 250 C/ 482 F). Viton is designed to meet the demands of a variety of harsh sealing environments, load conditions, and surface finishes. The center or shim layer is uncoated stainless steel, which can be varied to accommodate multiple thickness requirements.

Schumann’s Puts Wet Sump Oil Pump Program Up for Sale

schum2 300x224 Schumann’s Puts Wet Sump Oil Pump Program Up for Sale by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Verne Schumann has been around racing since the mid-‘50s. He knows a thing or two about the industry and so does his business, Schumann’s Sales & Service, Inc., an engine parts supplier located in Blue Grass, IA, which Verne founded in 1970.

Now, nearly 45 years later, Verne and his wife are beginning to ponder life after business and are putting the company’s wet sump oil pump program up for sale. Since 1970, Schumann’s has supplied the industry through high performance, OE rebuilders, AERA rebuilders, Ag manufacturers, and the Big 3 car manufacturers. Aside from dealing in oil pumps, Schumann’s also offers valve train parts, gaskets and piston rings, but those areas of the business won’t be up for sale for another year or so.

Verne and Schumann’s Sales & Service got seriously involved in oil pumps about five years ago, and within the past three years the company has gained a good chunk of market share. Technology-wise, Schumann’s holds numerous patents, has patents pending and patents applied for. When Verne and his company analyzed the oil pump industry, they looked at both wet sump and dry sump. Dry sump oil pump systems, however, only constituted about 10 percent of total racecars nationwide and there was a lot of competition in the market. Wet sump oil pumps were in 90 percent of the racecars running and the market only had one major player involved. “I decided to go wet sump,” Verne says.

When Verne analyzed the wet sump industry, it was real evident that over half the sales were small block Chevys. The small block Chevy, when it was invented in 1953, had a couple things that were inefficient within the oil pump portion of the engine. No. 1, the inlet of the oil pump into the valve plate came in below the gears where it should come into the pump at gear level. No. 2, the ability of the bypass valving system was inadequate on a percentage of volume to properly address the pump function. Schumann’s wet sump oil pump program resolved those issues with its dual feed pump, which is a patented product. The oil enters through two passageways – one to the bottom of the gears, which is traditional, and the other 50 percent of the oil comes into the side of the gears. “That’s been one of our mainstay products and it completely eliminates cavitation and aeration so that pump demand doesn’t outrun inlet supply,” Verne says. “That’s why we dominate with that pump. And with our pump the inlet is standard industry so you don’t need to buy a special pan or pick-up to use our pump.”

In addition to its dual feed oil pump, Schumann’s has a patented energy recovery system in which it takes disposable oil that has been pressurized and compressed once already, and through a modulation system, puts that oil back into the intake stream and turbochargers that intake stream. The amount of oil bypass is typically between 20 and 40 percent in a regular pump, so that percentage of compressed oil arriving back into the intake stream already predispositioned at that volume and pressure creates a savings of 20 to 40 percent on the input effort required to get the next volume of oil back out. “People are amazed when they run our energy recovery pump on a test stand how easy it turns over,” Verne says.

Schumann’s produces a national product for national exposure for national acceptance through national distributors. Through all of the company’s endeavors Verne says it has probably developed and brought to market 25 industry firsts. Over the past couple years the company has proven it can compete in the oil pump industry. “We have our fair share of the market place today and we have a larger share of technology,” Verne says. “In the last three years we’ve been a strong player.”

In an ideal world Verne is looking to sell Schumann’s in a merger/acquisition scenario where the business could double or triple in size, but would consider cash offers. The wet sump oil pump program requires 3,000 to 4,000 sq. ft. of floor space and Verne would like to keep the current sales force and distributors in place and add on to them. “In our industry there is a good marriage out there for us, and we’re going to try our best to make the best decision for the oil pump program,” Verne says. “It’s an opportunity for somebody to pick-up a very aggressive, turn key, dominant force in that segment with modern technology and patents.”

Doug Wolma on Judges Panel for Reman Award

DOUG WOLMA 268x300 Doug Wolma on Judges Panel for Reman Award by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Doug Wolma, winner of the ReMaTecNews Remanufacturer of the Year Award in 2012, will join the panel of judges for the Remanufacturer of the Year Award 2014. This brings the jury to four leading industry experts and adds a US dimension to the award, which is known as the most prestigious honor in automotive and commercial vehicle remanufacturing.

“Doug Wolma has been a leading light in the reman industry for several years and we welcome him on board.” said Chairman William Schwarck. “He will bring a lot of additional expertise to our panel of judges, on a practical and theoretical level, and we greatly appreciate his willingness to invest his time and vast experience in strengthening the panel.”
Doug Wolma, a well-known character in the US reman industry, left his position as Global Remanufacturing Manager at Meritor to take up a new position within the Dana Holding Corporation. At Meritor, Wolma was a driving force behind the company’s rise as one of the world’s foremost remanufacturing companies. He will now be responsible for driving Dana’s expansion into remanufacturing.

The Remanufacturer of the Year Award was founded in 2005 by ReMaTecNews, and is now in its 10th year. The prize is awarded to a person or business that has served the automotive or heavy-duty remanufacturing industry with particular distinction. Over its lifetime the award has celebrated the achievements of some of the reman industry’s prominent names. Within the industry it is considered a major accolade.

For the first time, the 2014 Remanufacturer of the Year Award ceremony will take place in the US on November 1st during the new Big R/ReMaTecUSA exhibition in Las Vegas. Schwarck says there are two reasons for this choice: “One is our wish to mark the beginning of a new stage in the relations between the organizers of the world’s two largest reman events: ReMaTec and APRA. The other is that the increasing globalization of remanufacturing will, inevitably, lead to closer links across the Atlantic as well as across the world. Therefore, it is only fitting that the world’s most prestigious distinction in remanufacturing is also awarded outside its original home in Europe.”

The other three judges are Volker Schittenhelm of FIRM, the European Association of Engine Rebuilders, Fernand Weiland, a former Chairman of APRA Europe and William Schwarck, Chairman of the panel and Editor-in-Chief of ReMaTecNews. The application deadline for the award is September 15th. For more information about judging criteria and guiding principles, visit www.bigrrematecusa.com.

DRC Race Products Valve Spring Removal Tool

DRC tool in use 300x200 DRC Race Products Valve Spring Removal Tool by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It is unrealistic to assume race engines will operate reliably without regular inspections. In fact high-powered, high-revving drag racing engines require valve spring pressure checks after each run.

At the other end of the spectrum mild-powered race engines often tolerate at least one season of racing and sometimes two or three before a rebuild is necessary. Despite their admirable longevity, however, you can’t just weld the hood shut and forget them.

Never an arduous job, valve spring pressures can be checked quickly, and if replacements are necessary, a full set of intake and exhaust valves can be renewed in around 45 minutes. When a spring is broken or its pressure low, replacement is necessary. Valve springs are probably the most highly stressed components in the race engine and most serious racers own a valve spring tester and a spring removal tool. They soon learn that adopting a few simple periodic inspections—often between races—greatly improve the engine’s prospects for survival, reducing the likelihood of premature failure.

“Once valve springs lose about 10 percent of their tension they need to be changed,” says Saturday-night drag racer Mike Knowles. Conveniently, they are replaced with the engine assembled. By applying air pressure to the cylinder via the spark plug hole, the valves are prevented from falling inside. Then the spring removal tool is engaged, the valve locks popped off, the spring changed, the air pressure released and . . . onto the next cylinder.

In addition to replacing broken or worn springs, the valve removal tool is convenient when mating flat tappets to a camshaft. This procedure is usually performed using light break-in springs and followed by the installation of the proper race springs. All of this requires replacing the springs while the cylinder heads are still on the engine.

Available from DRC Race Products, the Valve Spring Removal Tool is designed to perform in-the-car spring removal and replacement easily and economically. The tool is designed to handle the heavy spring pressures of today’s racing engines without the worry of tool flexing or breaking. Manufactured from steel, DRC’s tool is designed to fit aftermarket shaft rocker systems, as well as most Chrysler applications with both aftermarket and stock rockers.

The tool comes complete with one pivot shaft and a removal handle. This allows the tool to be swung out of the way in order to remove the spring without having to remove the tool. Extra shafts are available, allowing the same tool to be used on a variety of engines.

Now-Dead Cars That Launched 10 Years Ago

Automotive anniversaries are often big news. Last year, the Chevrolet Corvette turned 60 and the Porsche 911 hit 50. This year, the spritely Mazda MX-5 Miata turns 25. The iconic Ford Mustang just turned the big Five-Oh, too.

But what about lesser anniversaries? Think about it: there are plenty of cars with birthdays that slide under the radar every year. And some automotive endeavors don’t even last long enough to warrant a proper milestone celebration.

To that end, we’re taking a look back to 2004 – just 10 years ago – to see what vehicles would be celebrating a decade of life, assuming they were still alive today. Do note, for this list, we’ve only included vehicles that launched for the 2004 model year, not calendar year.

Click here to see both iconic and easily forgettable cars that would be celebrating 10 fruitful years in 2014… if they were still alive… READ MORE

Volvo’s New XC90 SUV Powerplant

Volvo Engine 300x225 Volvo’s New XC90 SUV Powerplant by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The upcoming, wholly redesigned Volvo XC90 has a lot of potential, and we’ve just gotten the details on the power-train technology to be employed on this new model.

Previous iterations of the Volvo SUV line have availed buyers with the option of a Yamaha V8 for extra, added power, but not this time. In fact, we’re not even looking at six cylinders; this power-train has only got four. The engine of choice for the upcoming flagship of the Volvo SUV line will be a 2.0 liter straight four hybrid. Don’t let the small size fool you though. The power-train is rated at just over 400 hp and produces 472 ft. lbs. of torque.

The engine relies on the twin-charger setup, utilizing a supercharger at lower engine output, while gaining the efficiency of a turbocharger at higher engine outputs. This allows for the application of a much larger turbocharger for use at higher RPM, which would not normally be facilitated on an engine this small. Using Volvo’s dual-charged Drive-E system, power delivery is optimized.

The engine delivers power to the front wheels, with the rear wheels relying on an 80 hp (60 kW) electric motor for power. The electric motor driving the rear wheels provides immediate torque during acceleration. The vehicle runs in ‘hybrid’ mode by default, but can be switched to all-electric mode with the push of a button. The new XC90 will have a purely electric range of 25 miles, and the battery pack also has plug-in capability, giving the XC90 semblance of BMW’s new i3 SUV. In the US, a reduced power-train, lacking the electric motor and hybrid system, will be available to customers as well, featuring just the 2.0 liter four cylinder engine, rated at 316 hp.

There are also less potent engine variants available, including two four cylinder turbodiesels, producing 190 and 295 hp, respectively. Turbodiesel variants offer best in class fuel consumption with an average 47 combined mpg. The new line of engines underscores Volvo’s aggressive campaign to enhance the environmental friendliness of its vehicles. The new XC90 achieves a carbon dioxide emissions rating of around 60 kg/km, and Volvo has decreased emissions across its fleet over the last year by an industry leading 8.4 percent. The next generation XC90 makes its debut in October at the Paris Auto Show, and we can expect to see it in US showrooms next spring.
