Cosworth double-feature is XCar’s a drool-worthy look back

While American fans of Ford performance cars in the ’80s and early ’90s were loving the 5.0 Mustang, Taurus SHO and, for those who wanted to be a little different, the Merkur XR4Ti, British fans of the Blue Oval were getting their own unique take on speed. The Sierra RS Cosworth (which was similar but not identical to the aforementioned Merkur) and later Escort RS Cosworth were the stuff of dreams with huge wings, hood vents and big power for their time and class. XCar Films aims to find out whether it is little more than nostalgia that makes these classics famous or it really is their legitimate performance.

Thanks to its Formula One and racing success, Cosworth was already a well-established performance name in the UK by the time it began selling tuned engines to Ford for the Sierra and Escort. The Sierra RS Cosworth hit the scene in 1986 with a turbocharged, 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 204 horsepower and rear-wheel drive. Its huge wing at the back signaled it immediately as something special, and it proved to be a performance powerhouse on and off the track. When it was retired, Ford replaced it with the Escort RS Cosworth that used an upgraded version of the same engine with 217 hp, all-wheel drive and an even bigger rear wing to net yet more racing victories.

XCar really gets into the spirit of the time, opening the video with the lo-fi grain of ’80s and ’90s TV, but to find out whether the Cossies stand up to modern scrutiny, you have to watch the video below. Stay tuned until the end to enjoy them at their best with some vintage motorsports footage.

Coach Guitar Straps 001 Check out these strapping classic car upholstery accessories by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Cars and rock and roll have gone together since the early days. Whether it’s Hot Rod Lincoln, G.T.O or a bunch of songs by The Beach Boys, auto enthusiasts were instrumental to the history of the genre. Photography has played a huge role in our hobby as well. Think of the number of cars you know about but only ever see in pictures. A company called Couch definitely sees the connection and creates seriously cool straps and accessories using deadstock automotive upholstery. They even offer a range of wallets and shaving bags, if you’re not a rocker or camera buff but love the classic style.

Their products run the gamut of classic cars. They have guitar and camera straps made from the upholstery of an ’80s Volkswagen Golf (pictured above), the vinyl trunk liner from a late ’60s Ford Mustang, vinyl seats from ’80s Mercedes-Benz, a fantastically retro shaving bag from a ’70s Jeep Cherokee interior and a lot more.

The deadstock material is the probably best part of the line. Couch finds the leftover fabric from places like auto upholstery shops. It means that no classic cars have to give up their seats to furnish you with a wallet or guitar strap. Even better, you’re not putting something around your neck made from material that someone sat on for 40 years – that could get kind of gross. If you’re in a band that needs a retro look or just want to take your classic car love with you everywhere, you might want to give Couch a browse.

It’s that time of year, when car enthusiasts everywhere gather on weekend for events across Canada. While we’ve already obsessively covered a number of track days, drift events and enthusiast car shows so far this summer, we couldn’t help but get more excited upon hearing the popular Cars & Coffee (C&C) meets were finally being brought to Canada.

The original C&C gathering is a weekly car enthusiast tradition that occurs in Irvine, California (and has since started in cities around the USA), but thanks to a few Canadian gearheads the event is now spreading North with the first ever Cars & Coffee kicking off in Montreal during F1 Grand Prix weekend (which guaranteed a lot of people and some really sweet cars too)… READ MORE

Working ‘On’ Your Business, Not Just ‘In’ It

127593feelingtr 00000076434 220x300 Working ‘On’ Your Business, Not Just ‘In’ It by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Before I dig into an article about how to work on your business instead of in it, I’d like to share a story with you. Once upon a time, my accountant had to prepare 102 W2s in a single year for my shop. We had so much turnover, dealt with so much chaos and were putting out so many fires that it was impossible for me to contemplate working “on” my business instead of “in” it.

Sure, I was doing some basic measurement, and I had some understanding of how my shop was doing on a day-to-day basis. But I didn’t know how to measure my employees, meaning I couldn’t hold them accountable. I had my customer base completely backward, leading to constant problems. In short, I was the poster child for a business owner who was trapped working in my business instead of working on it.

Perhaps the worst part is feeling trapped in the cycle. Chaos in the shop means I spend my time putting out fires and not on improving systems; a lack of good processes and procedures leads to chaos in the shop.

So what’s the way out? How can we break the cycle?
I’ll come at this problem from two directions, but, truthfully, it comes back to a single principle: we have to focus on results instead of activity.

Activity Or Results From Marketing?
I mentioned my customer base earlier. At the same time I was preparing 102 W2s, my shop was doing 70 cars a day. My advertising was comprised of discounts and fine print, meaning that I was attracting the lowest-quality customer possible. Those 70 cars per day were averaging a ticket in the mid $100s. We were running ourselves ragged, trying to take care of customers who only wanted a cheap price. We couldn’t care for the few great customers we did have because we were so swamped.

I had settled for activity (a busy shop) over results (a successful shop).

If you’ve ever been in this situation (or even if you’re there now), you know that it’s not easy to pull out of this kind of nosedive. Even if you switch your marketing approach tomorrow, unless your staff can follow through on the promises you make in your new advertising, you’ll never keep those new, high-quality customers.

So, if it seems like I’m glossing over the marketing side of your shop, it’s because working on your business is in large part about focusing on results instead of activity when it comes to training and accountability in your shop.

Starting The Accountability Cycle
Pulling out of the nosedive called “102 W2s in a year” meant two things: hiring better people, and holding them accountable.
The former took setting aside my ego and realizing that we’d never grow if I was always the best at everything in the shop.

The latter took the Auto Profit Masters (APM) Accountability Cycle.
It wasn’t called that at the time, of course. At the time, it was just a way to make training stick. If you’re the one who is constantly asking your employees what they learned in a training class, or reminding them of their commitment to fixing a number they control, this APM Accountability Cycle is for you.

It all starts with the same question I’ve been asking: Are you focusing on activity or results?

If you assign a training class to an employee and hope they get something from it, they will probably listen to the class. Because the goal was to “listen to a class,” that training might last a week before things go back to life as usual.

But, what if you give them a deadline to complete it, hold them to it, have them report what they learned and the things they’re going to change immediately, and then hold them to that promise? That’s a focus on results, and it leads to a lasting change in your business.
It’s true whether you’re talking about sending them to a conference to learn about customer service, or simply holding them accountable for working on Parts Gross Profit Percentage in your morning meeting.
This is the APM Accountability Cycle, and even though it’s nothing more elaborate than focusing on results instead of activity, it’s the difference between working longer and longer hours at your shop hoping things get better…and actually fixing problems.

127593corevalue 00000076436 300x197 Working ‘On’ Your Business, Not Just ‘In’ It by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis ValleyFrom there, working on your business only accelerates. From there, you can bring more and more numbers into focus and see them change. From there, it’s not a big leap to daily measurement, daily accountability and daily growth. There’s a lot to be said about the right software and applications, but, for now, we’ll stick to getting started working “on” your business.

Is Your Parachute Packed?
Does it really matter if you want to work in your business? What if you really enjoy being a part of the day-to-day, turning wrenches or advising customers?

The answer, of course, is that you should keep doing what you love. But I’d caution you to keep your eyes on the finish line: what is your exit plan?

It’s not even fully implemented yet, but we’ve already seen what the Affordable Care Act has done to the cost of owning a business in just four years. Whether because of legislation, a family emergency or simply sailing into the sunset, working on your business today means you can pull the ripcord down the road at a moment’s notice.

127593parachute 00000076437 225x300 Working ‘On’ Your Business, Not Just ‘In’ It by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis ValleyAfter all, what’s an exit strategy other than working on your business each day? Systematize operations; measure, manage and improve your important numbers; move toward remote management. The only part I haven’t already talked about is securing good legal counsel.

Ultimately, it comes down to your answer to this question: Are the next 10 years going to be easier or harder for you as a business owner? I know my answer, which is why I choose to focus on that exit strategy today. It’s why I choose to work on my business today.

The good news is that getting to a place where you can guide or direct the business without having to be physically on-site — or rather, to a place where you’re working on your business, whether or not you’re in your business — is just a matter of focusing on results instead of activity.

Doing this in marketing leads to better customers; doing this with employees leads to more effective training; and doing this with your numbers means security for your business both now and in the future when you’re ready to hit the eject button.

Everyone loves a good surprise and Me to We motivational speaker, author and double amputee Spencer West is no exception. West was candidly caught off guard when presented with a custom 2014 Ford Escape donated by Ford of Canada which he’s personally driving coast-to-coast across Canada as part of Free The Children’s ten-week, 90 stop We Create Change Tour.

After being told that he would never be a functioning member of society after losing both his legs at the age of five, Spencer West continues to redefine what is possible and inspire millions of people with his powerful stories of overcoming challenges. This custom designed 2014 Ford Escape has been outfitted by Ford engineers with advanced hand controls for the brake and gas pedal functions, plus extra padding in the driver seat, a custom seatbelt system and hand grips to ensure easy accessibility in and out of the vehicle for West and his wheelchair.

The remote control engine start and remote control lift-gate (which are already standard features) in the Ford Escape made this vehicle an ideal platform to suit West’s needs, offering added convenience and accessibility. The vehicle can also easily convert back to its traditional gas and brake pedals for use by other drivers too, offering maximum flexibility for years to come.

If his name already sounds familiar, Spencer West first made major headlines when he reached the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, and then again after completing a 300 km trek across Alberta on his hands and in his wheelchair in support of clean water projects through Free The Children. This Summer’s We Create Change Tour is West’s third initiative with Free The Children and this time around he’s teamed up with Ford to focus on raising awareness for the fifty-seven million children across the world who are still denied the opportunity to go to school. West alongside MMVA nominated Canadian music act, Neverest and 11-year-old blogger/activist Hannah Alper are already on the road, as their Canada-wide road trip runs straight through until June 17 to help Canadian youth go further in making change.

Click here to watch the video above, as we caught up with Spencer West for a personal tour of his new car after he received the big surprised from the good folks at Ford of Canada.

Canadian Grand Prix guarantees F1 in Montreal for another ten years

canadian f1 grand prix 1 11 1 Canadian Grand Prix guarantees F1 in Montreal for another ten years by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Formula One racing comes and goes from various venues in North America, meandering as it has between locations like Austin, Indianapolis, Phoenix and Watkins Glen. But the one stalwart of grand prix racing on this continent has been the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. Held with only three exceptions (in 1975, 1987 and 2009) since 1961, North American racing fans can (almost) always count on the Canadian Grand Prix to provide them with their F1 action. And that’s not about to change any time soon.

According to Autosport, the embattled and controversial Bernie Ecclestone has signed a new deal with the promoters of the Canadian Grand Prix to keep it on the calendar for a further ten years. The deal is said to be worth £100 million (CAD$183-million) and is reportedly backed by our government authorities. The Montreal municipal, Quebec provincial and Canadian federal governments have all been major supporters of the event in the past.

As a result, the Canadian Grand Prix will remain a guaranteed fixture on the F1 calendar through 2024, but not without its conditions: as part of the agreement, organizers will have to invest around $25-40 million (CAD$45-73 million) on a new pit lane and medical complex to update the existing structure in time for the 2017 race. In return, the race promoters will retain a larger share of the ticket sales, the lion’s share of which are understood to typically go to Ecclestone’s Formula One Management.

The first home of the Canadian Grand Prix was at Mosport Park in Ontario, which traded off a couple of times with the Circuit Mont-Tremblant currently owned by billionaire Ferrari collector Lawrence Stroll and situated a couple of hours outside of Montreal. The race moved in 1978 to Montreal’s Île Notre-Dame, which was renamed after the late hometown hero Gilles Villeneuve following his death in 1982.

Here at Autoblog Canada we’re usually a pretty patriotic bunch, but when it comes to this list of top 10 awesome cars we simply can’t have in Canada, it looks like a case can be built for switching citizenship or at least signing up for some sort of foreign exchange program.

Don’t get us wrong, we still get our fair share of fun to drive performance cars that aren’t sold overseas either, but euro-spec models and hot hatchbacks like the Audi RS4 Avant, BMW M 135i three-door and Volkswagen Scirocco R (pictured above) are sadly the stuff many Canadian enthusiasts can only dream of buying.

While living in Canada has a lengthy list of benefits and very we’re proud to call it home, one can’t help but feel short changed at the thought of forbidden automotive fruit we’ll never be able to buy on Canadian soil.

Momentum. That was the word of the weekend at the last race in MonacoNico Rosberg retaking it, Williams getting reacquainted with it and Marussia tasting it for the first time, among other examples. That same, weighted term flew to Canada with the money circus known as Formula One, took all weekend to build and then walloped the front end of the field and the season on Sunday afternoon.

Rosberg carried his Monaco triumph into qualifying, putting his Mercedes AMG Petronas on pole ahead of teammate and reconciled friend Lewis Hamilton. Reigning World Champion Sebastian Vettel finally got the better of Daniel Ricciardo, lining up for Infiniti Red Bull Racing in third ahead of his teammate in sixth, split up by Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa in the Williams. Ferrari, having brought numerous aero updates for this race, didn’t get the push it was really looking for, Fernando Alonso happy to get seventh ahead of Kimi Räikkönen, still troubled by his F14T, in tenth. Jean-Eric Vergne secured eighth for Toro Rosso, Jenson Button lining up ninth for a still-struggling McLaren.

When the lights went out, Mercedes, Williams and Marussia would all find out how quickly momentum can short circuit or disappear in a sparkly ball of high-speed contact, spilled fluids and tire barriers… READ MORE
