iPhone XR pre-orders are now live

%name iPhone XR pre orders are now live by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

More than a month after Apple originally held its special iPhone media event, pre-orders for Apple’s iPhone XR are finally live. If you’re keen on picking up Apple’s new 6.1-inch device as soon as possible, you’ll either want to check out the official Apple Store app or visit the iPhone XR page on Apple’s website. Historically, Apple’s website can sometimes buckle with heavy traffic, but hopefully such issues won’t appear this time around. Once you get your oder in, devices are slated to ship (and appear in retail stores) beginning next Friday on October 26.

With good reason, many tech pundits and analysts believe that the iPhone XR will easily be Apple’s most popular iPhone model this release cycle. As we’ve mentioned before, the iPhone XR offers users interested in a new device a brand new form factor at a price point that won’t necessarily break the bank. Case in point: the entry-level iPhone XR with 64GB of storage starts out at $749, while the 128GB and 256GB models are priced at $799 and $899, respectively.

%name iPhone XS and XS Max sales start strong, could lead to new records for Apple by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In a report released on Thursday, Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) shared data which shows that early returns for the iPhone XS and XS Max have been generally positive, with each accounting for 8% of US iPhone sales, respectively, for the quarter. Meanwhile, the iPhone X captured 14% of the US market share, while the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus reigned supreme with 16% and 17% of sales, respectively.

Keep in mind that the iPhone XS models managed to grab nearly 20% of the market after having only been available for ten days of the entire quarter. In less than two weeks, the XS and XS Max managed to make a significant dent in the US iPhone market share, despite their recency and their record-setting prices.

Google Maps’ improved live-sharing makes it harder to fib about your ETA

%name Google Maps’ improved live sharing makes it harder to fib about your ETA by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Remember the glory days of the pre-smartphone era, when the only things you did with your handset besides calling people were texting and maybe playing Snake? Those were the days, back when you’d be planning to meet up with friends and were able to promise yeah, yeah, I’m on my way when you know good and well you were still nursing a bag of Cheetos and sitting on the couch. Heck, I was as guilty of that as anyone. I’m on my way. I’m about to leave. I’ll be there in a minute. Now here we are, with Google Maps but the latest smartphone application to make it super-simple to share your live location with any contact you want. So that they can follow along, watching the icon that is you slowly snaking along the road the way spies and such do in the movies when they’re tracking someone. Not to cast this in some sort of anti-privacy light, it’s just — no more “I’m on my way.” Tap. Let me actually see where you are. (Sigh.)

Virtual reality experience forces people to lose their jobs and homes, boosts empathy

%name Virtual reality experience forces people to lose their jobs and homes, boosts empathy by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Reading a news story about an increase in the homeless population might make you feel sad for a moment but if we’re all being honest you’re probably going to totally forget about it a minute or so later. We’ve all become quite skilled at totally separating ourselves from the plight of our fellow humans, and that’s a problem that researchers from Stanford think they might be able to fix with virtual reality.

A new study by Stanford scientists focused on using VR to boost empathy by putting people in the shoes of someone who they might otherwise only read or hear about. Specifically, the used virtual reality to give everyday people a crash course in losing absolutely everything.

We’ll have to wait even longer for Guardians of the Galaxy 3, which has a weird working title

%name We’ll have to wait even longer for Guardians of the Galaxy 3, which has a weird working title by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The third installment in Marvel’s movie franchise about a certain motley crew of heroic space misfits keeps making news for everything except, you know, the movie itself. That’s partly because the darn thing still doesn’t have a director and now we’re going to have to wait even longer for Peter Quill and the rest of the Guardians to rock out to some epic tune-age again while they save the galaxy.

The original plan for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 had called for starting production some time in the next few months. But then Disney canned director James Gunn after a series of inappropriate tweets from his past surfaced, which has led the studio to push the start of production all the way back to February 2021. That’s according to new information from Production Weekly. But hey! At least we now have a working title for the flick: Hot Christmas. Who knows what it means, though. Maybe because global warming is going to get so bad that the Christmas holiday will be pretty warm once this movie finally hits the big screen? That’s probably it.

Last winter’s flu season was even more deadly than you can imagine

%name Last winter’s flu season was even more deadly than you can imagine by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

For many people, flu season is little more than annoyance, but every single year thousands of people die from whatever strain of the disease is making the rounds. Sometimes the number is relatively small, with only around 12,000 to 15,000 deaths, while other years see 40,000 or 50,000 deaths, many of whom are either small children or elderly. 2018 was different.

The flu season which peaked in around the start of February of this year took approximately 80,000 lives. This figure, as reported by the Associated Press, comes from Dr. Robert Redfield, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and it’s the latest overall estimate that really puts the most recent flu epidemic in proportion.
