• The coronavirus’ US toll reached a grim milestone this week, according to the latest numbers from Johns Hopkins University that show the US now having surpassed 100,000 deaths from the virus.
• This comes as states around the country are reopening, while cases there are also surging.
• The latest data shows coronavirus cases in 17 states surging after reopening.

Well, you can’t say nobody saw this coming. Pretty much every state in the country right now is still feeling the effects of the coronavirus but is nevertheless on a path to reopening — some states faster than others, and some to a greater degree than others. At the same time, this is happening because we’re already up to about 1 in 4 Americans being unemployed right now – a frighteningly high statistic that’s put the country in Great Depression territory. Which is to say, the reopenings are unfolding because economies can’t take much more of this, not because health trends are pointed in the right direction.

On the contrary, in fact. More than a dozen states saw immediate spikes in coronavirus cases after starting to reopen, and most of the new coronavirus cases in the US — there are now more than 1.7 million COVID-19 cases and more than 102,000 reported deaths — come from 17 states that are trying to reopen. That’s according to CNN, which reported Wednesday that areas already regarded as coronavirus hotspots like California, New York, Illinois, and Texas, each saw the biggest surge and more than 1,000 new coronavirus cases. Moreover, the surges are only expected to get worse from there.

• On June 10, a new Netflix series called Lenox Hill will debut, following the efforts of doctors and nurses at the Lenox Hill hospital in New York City.
• The 8-episode documentary series shows the highs and lows of daily life for the nation’s frontline healthcare workers.
• Lenox Hill was filmed between April 2018 and November 2019, so while it doesn’t encompass the coronavirus pandemic, the specter of the virus still very much casts a shadow across what looks to be an inspiring story about healthcare heroes.

The coronavirus pandemic is never mentioned once — or even alluded to, for that matter – in the just-released trailer for Lenox Hill, a new 8-episode docuseries from Netflix coming on June 10. But it doesn’t have to be, since the story here already packs a huge emotional punch without it. Such that, I’m going to go ahead and call it: I’m looking forward to this documentary series so much I think it stands a good chance of being one of my favorite binges of the year.

The story: According to Netflix’s official description, Lenox Hill offers “An intimate look at the lives of four doctors — two brain surgeons, an emergency room physician, and a Chief Resident OB/GYN — as they navigate the highs and lows of working at the renowned Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. With extraordinary access and an unflinching eye, the series shows each physician’s struggle to balance their personal and professional lives, and delves into each patient’s personal journey.”

• Coronavirus transmission is still a real problem, even if the spread has been contained in certain regions.
• A new study shows that more than 80% of COVID-19 cases on a cruise ship were asymptomatic. It started on the eighth day into the journey with a single patient who was isolated. By day 32, 128 of the 217 people on board tested positive.
• The cruise had various safety measures in place, as it departed to its destination in mid-March, at a time when countries were already locking down to limit the spread.

After five months of fighting the novel coronavirus, it should be clear to everyone how dangerous this virus can be. Sadly, that’s not the case, and many people still choose to ignore the risks. As it stands, there are two reasons COVID-19 is so dangerous. First, it spreads with ease, and it does so quietly. Second, no drug or vaccine can significantly limit its spread or prevent complications, although many drugs show promise.

As long as we don’t have medicine to fight the virus effectively, we should stick to social distancing for as long as possible to reduce the transmission risk, even if the economy is reopening. And when we’re out, we need to wear face masks, especially in crowded places. A new study looking at specific COVID-19 patients further confirms the dangers of the disease, proving that the majority of people who got the coronavirus can be asymptomatic.

• Hydroxychloroquine has been banned as a coronavirus treatment by the French Health Ministry.
• Hydroxychloroquine was developed as an anti-malaria drug and, for a time, was championed as a promising medication to battle COVID-19.
• Numerous studies, however, have shown that hydroxychloroquine can cause serious side effects and is largely ineffectual when it comes to treating coronavirus patients.

In a statement published yesterday, the health ministry in France banned the use of hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for the coronavirus. The move comes just a few weeks after a National Institute of Health study found that hydroxychloroquine — which was initially developed as an anti-malaria drug — wasn’t effective in battling COVID-19.

“Whether [in doctors offices] in the cities or in the hospital, this … should not be prescribed for patients with COVID-19,” the ministry said.

• Google launched a new program called Scam Spotter this week that aims to help people spot and avoid common scams on the internet.
• The three golden rules of scam spotting are to take your time, do your research on the person or group that has gotten in touch with you, and refuse to send anything on the spot.
• Google also put together a quiz that you can take to see if you can detect common scams.

Scams are as pervasive now as they have ever been, from spoofed phone calls to texts with malicious links to sites and apps that attempt to steal our data. If you want to stay safe online, you need to be vigilant at all times, especially during a crisis like the coronavirus pandemic, which really seems to draw scammers out of the woodwork.

In order to keep people safe from these scams, Google launched a new program this week called Scam Spotter. As the name suggests, Scam Spotter helps you detect scams on sight and avoid accidentally giving your information or money to bad actors. Those of us who spend all day online have to become adept at spotting and avoiding scams, but that’s not the case for everyone, and this could be an incredibly valuable resource.

• Weather delayed the first attempt to launch SpaceX Crew Dragon Demo-2 mission on Wednesday, and it’s looking like it might happen again on Saturday.
• The official weather report from the 45th Space Wing Weather Squadron puts the odds of favorable weather conditions at a mere 40%.
• Saturday’s backup launch window is on Sunday, which also has just a 40% chance of being suitable for launch, according to the report.

NASA’s historic first crewed mission from US soil since the end of the Space Shuttle era was pushed back from its scheduled launch on Wednesday to the backup launch window on Saturday. Weather observations revealed that certain conditions weren’t within their acceptable ranges, forcing the mission to be delayed.

It was a huge bummer for both SpaceX and NASA, but these things do happen with surprising frequency, and that’s why backup launch dates exist. Unfortunately, it’s already looking like the weather won’t be any better on Saturday. In fact, it could end up being worse.

• New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced an executive order that will authorize businesses to require protective face coverings and allow them to refuse entry to those who won’t wear a mask.
• The order doesn’t require businesses to place such restrictions on their customers but allows them to do so if they choose to.
• Scientists have demonstrated the positive benefits of wearing a face mask, showing that it is helpful in preventing the spread of the coronavirus.

New York City has been one of the hardest-hit areas with regard to the novel coronavirus pandemic. The huge number of people, the widespread use of public transit, and the complicated nature of arranging for testing and treatment of such a massive population led to a rapidly-growing pool of patients.

Now that things are beginning to trend in the right direction, NY Governor Andrew Cuomo wants to ensure the progress being made isn’t squandered. To that end, he announced today that he is signing an executive order that will give businesses the power to deny services to anyone who refuses to wear a protective face covering.

• Microsoft announced on Thursday that the Xbox Series X will support “thousands of games” when it launches this holiday season thanks to backward compatibility.
• The Xbox team has already spent over 100,000 hours testing Xbox 360 and original Xbox games to make sure that they will be playable on the Xbox Series X.
• Microsoft says backward compatible games can also support HDR and up to 120FPS.

There were a number of reasons that the PlayStation 4 overtook the Xbox One so quickly and never looked back, but if there was one area where Microsoft took on Sony and won during this console generation, it was support for classic games. Microsoft made backward compatibility a priority relatively early on, and that commitment has seemingly only grown stronger as the next generation of consoles approaches this holiday season.

In a blog post on Thursday, Xbox Series X director of program management Jason Ronald detailed the long “journey” that the company has taken to make older games playable on its new consoles. It all began with the announcement of Xbox 360 backward compatibility coming to the Xbox One at E3 2015. This eventually resulted in more than 500 Xbox 360 games being playable on the Xbox One, along with some of the most popular franchises from the original Xbox. But Ronald says that the same team is “pushing the envelope again with Xbox Series X.”

• Costs have exploded for businesses that have been closed for weeks because of the coronavirus pandemic and which are just now starting to open back up.
• Around the country, some customers haven’t been happy to see a coronavirus surcharge included on their bills and receipts.
• The businesses insist this is only a result of things like the cost of new cleaning supplies that have come with trying to maintain a safe environment in the age of the coronavirus.

As costs keep mounting for businesses like restaurants that are reopening around the country and trying desperately to lure back customers who’ve been spooked by the coronavirus, some of those businesses are trying a risky tactic that’s angering a broad swath of their clientele: Adding coronavirus surcharges to customer bills.

This practice is happening around the country especially at restaurants, hit hard by the sudden evaporation of their business (and complete closures, in most cases) followed by a reopening with dining rooms capped at a reduced capacity. Raising prices is one way to compensate, as is adding special charges to receipts. And while that’s drawn ire from many customers, other hard-hit businesses — everything from dentist offices to hair salons — are likewise increasingly turning to the same tactic.
