Pixar has released a new short film that’s come out of its SparkShorts animation initiative the company unveiled last month. The initiative being a foundation for independent projects within the company that helps keep its beloved tradition of short films alive, but also brings new animation and directing talent to the fore that might not have otherwise had a chance to work on one of the shorts attached to a Pixar feature.

Through the SparkShorts program, creators get several months and resources to work on a short animated project, and the latest such film to come out of this effort — titled Smash and Grab — is now available to watch on YouTube. And let’s just say, if you loved Wall-E, you’ll definitely want to check out these ridiculously adorable robots performing mindless, factory-like jobs and somehow managing to exude charm and likeability with their beeps and boops, human-like motion and luminescent eyes a la our protagonist from Wall-E.

Tesla’s Model 3 is the ‘most satisfying’ car to own, edging out BMW and Porsche

The passion that Tesla owners tend to have for their cars is perhaps unrivaled across the auto industry. So even though some Tesla vehicles have had their fair share of issues — with fit and finish problems on the Model X being an obvious example — Tesla owners, by and large, are much happier with their cars than anyone else.

Driving this point home, a new report from Consumer Reports (via CNBC) reveals that Tesla’s Model 3 is currently the “most satisfying car” among all car owners. That data is the result of a survey in which Consumer Reports asked car owners if they would re-buy their existing car if they could go back in time. The survey also called on respondents to answer questions regarding the driving experience, audio quality, perceived value, comfort, and more.

This dune-covered volcanic rock bed is one of the coolest places on Mars

There are lots of cool sights to see here on planet Earth, but our Solar System is filled with planets that are just as interesting, and we’re just now getting a chance to see them.

This stunning image of sandy dunes on Mars is a great example. The photo was snapped by the HiRISE camera built into NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, and it’s immediately apparent that what you’re looking at is otherworldly. The sandy crescents lay atop a dry, jagged surface thought to be lava rock that poured across the surface long ago.

Tesla employees confess lingering layoff fears on anonymous chat app

After Tesla laid off some 9,000 workers last year and announced pink slips for another 7% of its workforce in January — which equates to laying off 3,000 more workers — it comes as no surprise that concerns about more layoffs remain pervasive inside the electric carmaker’s employee ranks.

That quickly became clear after the anonymous chat app Blind, where layoffs and related topics are always a popular subject for discussion, decided to launch an entire channel dedicated to this topic. Blind asked its community about layoff anxieties at the companies where they work, and in this survey that was open from February 2 through February 8, it quickly became clear that such worries were most acute at Tesla compared to tech companies where other respondents are employed.

Hey, remember that terrible Mars mission startup that just officially died because it totally ran out of money and it wasn’t even close to doing anything meaningful? Well, good(?) news! It’s back, and it apparently found someone that’s willing to part with a whole heap of cash to fund its ongoing existence.

In a new press release — the first official word from the company since July 2018, by the way — Mars One Ventures confirms reports that it has hit bankruptcy, while noting that it has a month to figure out how to drag itself out of its grave. As luck would have it, an unnamed investor has materialized to save the day.

Verizon was recently hit with a new lawsuit from the Pennsylvania attorney general over allegations that it promised but failed to deliver Amazon Echo devices and Prime subscriptions to new subscribers.

Filed yesterday, and originally brought to light by Ars Technica, the lawsuit alleges that Verizon in November of 2018 began enticing new subscribers with an “on us” marketing promo that promised users either a free Amazon Echo or a free Amazon Prime subscription. Users who decided to take Verizon up on the deal were subsequently given a 60-day window whereupon they could claim their prize.

Just hours after the dates for Apple’s 2019 Worldwide Developers Conference were reportedly uncovered, details of yet another Apple event have been revealed. On Tuesday, sources told BuzzFeed News that Apple is planning to hold its first event of the year on March 25th at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California. The focus of the event will be the subscription news service that has been making headlines all day today.

BuzzFeed’s sources say that the event will center around Apple’s subscription services, but wouldn’t confirm or deny if there will be any news about the TV service rumored to launch this year. Apple is reportedly preparing for an April launch, which would make this event one of the last opportunities to discuss it publicly.

Depending on who you ask, Whole Foods is continuing to live up to the unfortunate nickname — “Whole Paycheck” — that cost-conscious shoppers bestowed on it. We’re referring in this case to a leaked email obtained by The Wall Street Journal, which showed that even with Amazon’s deep pockets, Whole Foods is apparently quietly rising prices on many items. The reason being — well, even Whole Foods is not immune to challenges facing its industry peers, with the leaked email noting that the grocer feels the need to keep hiking prices to cover rising costs.
