The European Commission’s request for Apple and Google to take additional steps that further protect smartphone and tablet users from unexpected in-app purchases coming from their children. Now, Google said that starting in late September, free games in the Play Store that come with in-app purchases won’t be labeled as free anymore, Engadget reports.Google also said it will take additional measures to prevent children from buying in-game items, and will implement measures to monitor any breaches of EU law.

Amazon officially announced its eBook and audiobook subscription service Kindle Unlimited on Friday after an accidental leak revealed the details of the service less than 24 hours earlier. Subscribers will have access to over 600,000 eBooks and thousands of Audible audiobooks on Kindles as well as iOS, Android and other devices for $9.99 a month.

And now we see another good reason for Microsoft to not release the Surface mini tablet. ITWorld reports that Lenovo has already stopped selling its two smaller Windows-based tablets in the United States because there simply isn’t any demand for them. The decision comes to yank the smaller Windows tablets even though both of them — the ThinkPad 8 and the Miix 2 — haven’t even been out for a year.

Earlier this year, we heard that Microsoft was working on something called 3D Touch, a new system that would integrate the Xbox One’s Kinect technology into Windows Phone. WPCentral’s sources now say, however, that plans to release a device with 3D Touch have been put on the shelf for the time being because Microsoft execs and engineers couldn’t escape the nagging sensation that it was nothing more than a gimmick.
