One of the biggest days of the year for Android fans has arrived, as Google is set to kick off its annual I/O developer conference in Mountain View, California with a keynote address on Tuesday morning. As always, Google is expected to demonstrate the most exciting new features of its upcoming Android update. But Google’s hardware team will be busy today as well, with at least three devices rumored to be officially unveiled.

The stars of the show are likely to be the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL phones, which have leaked repeatedly in recent months, culminating in a full spec sheet making its way online on Monday. These midrange devices will not compete with the likes of the iPhone XS or the Galaxy S10 on a technical level, but at a significantly lower price point, Google is hoping to capture a segment of the market that is currently being underserved in the US.

HBO has removed the infamous coffee cup from the latest ‘Game of Thrones’ episode

%name HBO has removed the infamous coffee cup from the latest ‘Game of Thrones’ episode by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The fact that a misplaced coffee has been the most discussed event of the final season of Game of Thrones may not bode too well for HBO. In case you missed this hysterically inane controversy, a takeout coffee cup was spotted on a table in Winterfell early in the fourth episode of the popular HBO series, implying that not only did someone forget to move it before filming the scene, but that the editor didn’t catch it in post-production either.

Sadly, for those of us who hoped it might be a hint that the twist ending to Game of Thrones would be along the same lines as Monty Python and the Holy Grail or The Truman Show, the offending coffee cup has since been removed. If you watch “The Last of the Starks” on HBO Go or HBO Now, you will no longer see it.

Every Windows 10 PC can now use Alexa hands-free

%name Every Windows 10 PC can now use Alexa hands free by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

While Cortana is still technically the default voice-activated virtual assistant on Windows 10 devices, it never took off quite like Microsoft hoped it would. That has left an opening for other companies to make their case, which appears to be what Amazon is doing with its Alexa app for Windows 10. As of the most recent update, Alexa is completely hands-free, which means it will be listening “even when the app is running in the background or minimized.”

In previous versions of the app, the only way to activate Alexa was to manually push a button (unless you owned one of the few Windows 10 PC models with Alexa built in). Now, you can choose to have Alexa listen for a wake word at all times, or continue using the push-to-talk if you don’t want to activate Alexa with your voice.

Samsung might cancel your Galaxy Fold pre-order if it can’t get its act together soon

%name Samsung might cancel your Galaxy Fold pre order if it can’t get its act together soon by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Samsung’s first foldable phone and the company’s ambitions to prove to the world that it’s at the forefront of mobile innovation were dealt a massive blow a few weeks ago when Galaxy Fold review units experienced serious screen failures. Samsung was forced to postpone the Galaxy Fold’s release as it investigates the matter, and it recalled all the review units that were distributed. Samsung has yet to explain the exact cause of the problems, although we do have unofficial explanations of what went wrong with the foldable screens. But we still don’t have an updated release date for the Galaxy Fold, and the company is now notifying customers that their pre-orders could soon be canceled.

The unbelievable tech we need for true all-screen iPhones and Androids is almost ready

%name The unbelievable tech we need for true all screen iPhones and Androids is almost ready by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When it comes to smartphone design, 2019 is already shaping up to be one of the most exciting years ever. Apple’s iPhone 11 series smartphones are going to reuse the same design we saw on the iPhone XS last year and the iPhone X in 2017, but Apple is the only major smartphone company that’s going to sit still this year as far as display design is concerned. Samsung already released its new Galaxy S10 series smartphones, which ditch the thick bezels above and below the screen and introduce a nifty new “hole-punch” design where the front-facing cameras actually sit in a tiny hole in the top corner of the display. Then next week, OnePlus is expected to be the first company to bring the “pop-up camera” design to the United States in the new OnePlus 7 Pro. With this solution, the screen extends as far as it can to each edge and there are no notches or holes at all. Instead, a small motorized mechanism that houses a selfie camera pops up out of the top of the phone anytime a front-facing camera is needed. When it’s not in use, it retracts back into the handset.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Companies are working on all sorts of solutions that will allow them to stretch the screens on their flagship smartphones so that they cover the entire face of each device. One Chinese smartphone maker even added a small second screen to the back of a smartphone so that the rear camera can double as a selfie camera. It’s an interesting solution (that we’re surprisingly obsessed with because of the way it was implemented), but it’s just a stopgap. In fact, all of the new smartphone designs we’re seeing right now are merely stopgaps solutions. The holy grail of all-screen phone tech has been in the making for years now, and it’s going to completely change the game. What’s more, it’s finally close enough to becoming a reality that Samsung was willing to confirm it publicly.
