  • Strawberry farmers have seen demand for their product plummet in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Nearly 25 million pounds of strawberries will likely be trashed every week during the peak of the harvest season.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The novel coronavirus pandemic has affected just about every possible industry. It’s forced stores and restaurants to shut down, closed schools and colleges, and even NASA is now working from home. With all that in mind, it probably shouldn’t be surprising that the strawberry market is in shambles, but it’s still seriously bumming me out.

Strawberries — you know, the most delicious of all Mother Nature’s creations — are in serious peril. Restaurants don’t want them because they can’t use them, and other buyers that use them in a variety of food products don’t need them right now, either. It’s a strawberry apocalypse and it’s happening right before our very eyes.

This $1,300 smart crib was vulnerable to a hack that could shake babies remotely

  • Researchers discovered a way to hack a smart crib to control its motion and speaker volume.
  • The hack required access to a Wi-Fi network, which would be difficult to gain.
  • The vulnerabilities have since been patched by the company.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The Snoo smart bassinet is like a dream come true for new parents. It has a seemingly magical ability to put babies to sleep in mere moments thanks to its soothing rocking motion, built-in speaker, and swaddle that ensures that little ones remain on their backs, safe and secure. It was also, for a time, hackable.

As Wired reports, researchers from security firm Red Balloon discovered that the internet-connected crib was vulnerable to attacks from users on the same Wi-Fi network. With access to the network, the researchers were able to remotely control the smart gadget, even pushing its motor and speaker past their designed limits.

  • An antiviral tablet from Japan called Avigan that’s normally used to treat influenza is getting a closer look for being a possible treatment option for people suffering from the COVID-19 coronavirus.
  • The company that makes the drug is in the midst of ramping up production, which comes as a clinical trial with the drug is underway in the US – and companies around the world are racing to find treatments and ultimately a vaccine with which to finally get the coronavirus pandemic under control.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Production of an antiviral tablet from Japan called Avigan that’s being tested as a treatment for the COVID-19 coronavirus is ramping up, following the launch of a Phase 2 clinical trial of the drug in the US.

The drug, also known as favipiravir and manufactured by Fujifilm Corp., has actually been approved for manufacturer and sale in Japan since 2014, when it was used to fight influenza. The company announced in recent days that as part of ramping up production of the drug, it will be allocating extra capacity at a facility in Japan to manufacture Avigan — and the company has also completed a number of deals necessary with international companies to source raw materials and pharmaceutical supplies needed to make the drug.

‘Captain Marvel 2’ might set up the next massive Avengers movie

%name ‘Captain Marvel 2’ might set up the next massive Avengers movie by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • A new MCU rumor says that Captain Marvel 2 might set up Avengers 5, or New Avengers.
  • Captain Marvel 2 would do precisely what Civil War did for the last two major Avengers films.
  • An actual release date for the New Avengers project hasn’t yet leaked, however.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

It was just a few days ago that we heard Marvel has been taking pitches from writers for Young Avengers. Anyone familiar with the MCU rumor mill knows that Young Avengers is an idea that appeared in various other leaks, and Marvel might be setting up the MCU to accommodate the storyline. After Endgame, the entire MCU needs to be rebuilt. Not only will we get more heroes to replace the ones who have died or retired, but we’ll also need new villains including a replacement for Thanos. On top of that, Marvel plans to incorporate new characters into the MCU properties that were unavailable before, including X-Men, Deadpool, and the Fantastic Four.

The addition of Disney+ to Disney’s arsenal makes it even easier to produce content across multiple franchises featuring the same actors and characters. MCU Phase 4 will be the first phase where standalone movies will be intertwined with TV series from Marvel Studios. The novel coronavirus has delayed the entire Phase 4 timeline, but at least some good came out of it: Marvel confirmed the release date of a movie that’s part of Phase 5, Captain Marvel 2. Now, a new rumor says that Carol Danvers’s new standalone adventure might set up Avengers 5.

NASA astronaut duo returns to a very different Earth

  • NASA’s Andrew Morgan and Jessica Meir are back on Earth, along with Russia’s Oleg Skripochka after departing the International Space Station late Thursday.

  • The coronavirus pandemic will prevent the astronauts from celebrating with friends and family.

NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Andrew Morgan are now back on solid ground, along with one of their Russian counterparts, Oleg Skripochka of Roscosmos. The trio shoved off from the International Space Station late Thursday and touched down back on Earth in the early morning hours.

Normally, this would be a routine crew return mission, and the astronauts would soon return home to the waiting arms of family and friends. Unfortunately, that’s not possible this time around, and the global coronavirus pandemic is to blame. The Earth the astronauts left over 200 days ago is not the same one that they have returned to.

New discovery might help critical coronavirus patients

%name New discovery might help critical coronavirus patients by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Researchers have engineered proteins that could travel the bloodstream and bind to excess cytokines in the so-called “cytokine storm” immune response that can take place with a variety of diseases.
  • The discoveries were made well before the novel coronavirus outbreak started in Wuhan, China.
  • The researchers believe their proteins could help in severe COVID-19 cases where cytokine storms can lead to death.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Doctors treating severe COVID-19 cases observed a condition called “cytokine storm” that can occur in some patients and lead to death. These so-called storms aren’t a new phenomenon, as they appear with other medical conditions as well. In simpler terms, the immune system that’s supposed to fight the novel coronavirus goes haywire and ends up attacking the whole body instead of just the virus. Doctors are using some drugs to lower the immune response in these severe cases, in an attempt to save the lives of these patients. Scientists explained that balancing the immune response is a tricky thing to do. On the one hand, the immune system creates antibodies that can kill the virus and help the patient recover. On the other hand, the cytokine storm that can follow might end up killing the patient.

Rather than use existing immuno-suppressing drugs to reduce the storms, doctors may be able to use a new therapy. Scientists have developed proteins that would bind to cytokines to help avoid complications that could lead to death.

  • California doctor claimed to have a “miracle cure” for COVID-19.
  • Dr. Jennings Ryan Staley is charged with mail fraud after admitting to illegally importing drugs from China and selling “treatment packs” to patients.

In the midst of a global health crisis like the coronavirus pandemic, we’re all searching for answers. Listening to the advice of doctors would seem like a good idea, but some medical professionals, like Dr. Jennings Ryan Staley, are exploiting the situation for their own benefit. Staley is now facing federal charges after falsely claiming to have a “Miracle Cure” for COVID-19.

Staley peddled his “cure,” which he claimed was “100%” effective, out of the Skinny Beach Med Spa in San Diego. I’m no health expert, but looking for a cure for a viral pandemic in a place called the Skinny Beach Med Spa already sounds like a bad idea.

Last chance to get the most incredible Fire HD 8 Tablet deal we’ve ever seen

%name Last chance to get the most incredible Fire HD 8 Tablet deal we’ve ever seen by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Amazon’s most popular Fire HD 8 Tablet model is sold out right now, but an even better deal has popped up on the retailer’s site — in fact, it’s the best Fire HD 8 Tablet deal we’ve ever seen.
  • The device typically sells for $80, but it’s available right now through Amazon’s Certified Refurbished program with a full warranty for just $39.99.
  • In addition to the tablet itself, this deal also includes a Show Mode Charging Dock for free, and the dock alone is a $40 value.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Amazon’s Fire HD 8 Tablet is by far our favorite tablet in Amazon’s lineup. Priced at $80 compared to hundreds of dollars for a comparable iPad, the device offers the perfect balance between size and affordability. It’s not as inexpensive as the Fire 7 but it’s still a terrific value. It’s also not as large as the Fire HD 10 so it’s wonderfully portable despite its nice big high-definition display.

Unfortunately, the most popular Fire HD 8 Tablet model is sold out right now at Amazon, which is a shame since it retails for $80 but was on sale for just $50. The black model is indeed sold out, though it’s still available in other colors at the discounted price. Before you pick up a new Fire HD 8 on sale though, there’s another deal you definitely need to know about.

Earlier this week, we told you about a sale we came across that completely blew us away. For a limited time only, Amazon is offering Certified Refurbished Fire HD 8 Tablets for just $39.99. That in itself is an incredible value considering how great this tablet is, but this sale gets even sweeter. In addition to the $80 tablet, you also get a $40 Show Mode Charging Dock for free! That’s a $120 value for just $39.99, and it’s a deal that is definitely unbeatable.

Certified Refurbished Fire HD 8 Tablet (8″ HD Display, 16 GB) – Black with Show Mode Charging D…: $39.99

For those unaware of how Amazon’s Certified Refurbished program works, there are really only a few things you need to know. First, devices sold as part of this program have been thoroughly inspected and are guaranteed to look and function like new. Second, if for some reason you receive a tablet that doesn’t look and function like new, you can return it for a full refund. And third, Certified Refurbished products come with a full manufacturer warranty just like they would if they were brand new. There’s literally zero downside.

This killer Fire HD 8 Tablet deal will almost certainly disappear either today or over the weekend, so we wanted to give our readers one last shot to get in on the action. Don’t miss out, because you’ll be sorry you did.

This coronavirus drug shows promise treating severe COVID-19 cases

%name This coronavirus drug shows promise treating severe COVID 19 cases by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • A promising coronavirus drug that’s been in testing around the world for months is showing promise at treating COVID-19 severe cases.
  • Remdesivir is the medicine in question, an anti-viral originally created to treat Ebola.
  • Anecdotal evidence shows that the drug can reduce fever and need for ventilation, and can significantly improve the condition of severe COVID-19 patients.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

COVID-19 has already killed more than 144,000 people out of the 2.2 million reported cases since the new disease was detected in China nearly four months ago. Sadly, tens of thousands more will likely die in the weeks to come, as the novel coronavirus reaches local peaks in various countries. But the race to find a vaccine is on, with more than 70 candidates in development around the world, including three that have reached clinical trials. At the same time, doctors are testing potentially life-saving therapies for COVID-19 by repurposing existing drugs that are meant to treat other ailments. One of them is hydroxychloroquine, the controversial anti-malarial drug that was featured prominently during White House briefings. The drug has delivered results in limited studies, while other research showed the drug isn’t as good as expected. Also, its severe side-effects on the heart prompted the stoppage of other studies.

That’s not the only coronavirus cure that physicians are testing right now, and there’s one other drug that’s showing promising results in patients with severe COVID-19 cases.
