China just remembered that 1,300 more people died of coronavirus

  • China added nearly 1,300 deaths to its total coronavirus casualties, an increase of 50% for Wuhan, the city where the COVID-19 outbreak began.
  • The change reflects the deaths that occurred early in the epidemic. COVID-19 patients died at home, and they were not counted in the official tallies.
  • China’s unexpected change further raises doubts about the country’s official COVID-19 figures.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

It can happen to anyone to forget stuff. Whether it’s your car keys that you keep misplacing or 1,290 coronavirus deaths that you didn’t add to what you claim it’s the official tally for your country. That’s how many extra COVID-19 victim China just added to its coronavirus stats, bringing the total death count to 4,632, out of 82,695 cases, at the time of this writing.

When it all began, China was slow to confirm the extent of the health crisis. Then it changed the way it reported cases a few times, confusing western countries, some of which weren’t exactly ready to trust China to begin with. Still, with COVID-19 figures growing at a steady pace in February, it seemed as China was sharing accurate statistics. Then Italy and Spain happened, and then the outbreak hit the US. That’s when simple math threw a massive wrench into China’s COVID-19 reporting.

Forget Zoom, Google Meet and WhatsApp are getting better video calling features

%name Forget Zoom, Google Meet and WhatsApp are getting better video calling features by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Video conferencing apps Google Meet and WhatsApp will get a few notable upgrades in the coming weeks.
• Google Meet will get a Zoom-like layout, as well as call quality improvements and new screen-sharing options.
  • WhatsApp will increase the maximum number of people on audio and video calls.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Video conferencing app Zoom was one of the early heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic thanks to its straightforward interface. The app is easy to learn and lets anyone connect with others, whether it’s for work and school, or whether it’s for staying in touch with loved ones while social distancing measures are in place. But the more popular Zoom grew, the more people looked at the security and privacy features of the app, discovering that it wasn’t as safe as the company claimed. Zoom calls weren’t entirely end-to-end encrypted, and some Zoom data was spilled over to Facebook, to name just a few of the recent issues. Zoom promised fixes just as more companies instructed staff to move to alternatives.

One of them is Google Meet, which is what Google calls its Hangouts video conferencing app for G Suite subscribers. And Google Meet is about to get even better at competing with Zoom. On top of that, Facebook’s WhatsApp is about to get a massive upgrade of its own, which should fix your personal video calling needs during the novel coronavirus health crisis.

Coronavirus prompts Samsung to cut smartphone production in half

%name Coronavirus prompts Samsung to cut smartphone production in half by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Samsung will see its smartphone production fall by more than 50% in April due to the coronavirus.
  • Some of Samsung’s biggest factories in countries like Brazil and India have been closed for weeks.
  • The smartphone industry on the whole is reeling and there’s no telling when demand will return to pre-coronavirus levels.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Samsung’s smartphone production is poised to drop by more than 50% this month on account of the coronavirus pandemic. The South Korean tech giant, which typically manufactures 25 million handsets in April, will see that figure drop down to around 10 million units according to a report from The Elec. That’s an astounding 60% decline, to be precise, and the resulting sales drop-off will undoubtedly have a huge impact on the company’s bottom line.

There are a few factors in play here worth mentioning. For starters, Samsung three weeks ago shut down a number of its smartphone factories in Slovakia, South Korea, Brazil, and India in order to comply with government shutdown directives designed to stop the coronavirus from spreading.

Some of you will get HBO Max for free when it launches in May

%name Some of you will get HBO Max for free when it launches in May by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • HBO Max’s launch date will be revealed soon, one of the last remaining details to learn about the latest subscription-based streaming video product to launch this year.
  • Others include NBC’s Peacock as well as Quibi, but HBO Max will come roaring out of the gate in a way that neither of those will be able to thanks to its ability to offer HBO’s slate of originals as well as programs and shows from Warner Bros., New Line, DC Entertainment, TNT, and much more.
  • Also, Charter subscribers who currently subscribe to HBO can get HBO Max for free.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Even before the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak exploded around the world, this year was already shaping up to be jam-packed on the streaming media front, with the launch of a handful of high-profile new streaming video services including Quibi, NBC’s streamer Peacock, and, soon, an all-new and even more content-packed tier of HBO called HBO Max.

HBO Max is just what the name implies — the “Max” reflects the fact that this new subscription offering is a super-stacked version that will give users tons more to watch beyond what you get with a standard HBO subscription. You’ll have HBO’s standard original programming with this tour, obviously, but also 10,000 hours of content at launch including extras from HBO’s parent company WarnerMedia like Friends (which the company stole away from Netflix) as well as TV classics like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The Big Bang Theory, and South Park. This product will cost $15/month when it launches in May (we don’t have an exact date yet), which definitely puts it on the high side compared to the price of rivals like Netflix (the most popular tier of which costs $13/month) and Disney+ ($7/month). But there’s good news on that front — some of you will be getting this for the grand total of absolutely nothing.

Jeff Bezos thinks the US economy is still not ready to start reopening

%name Jeff Bezos thinks the US economy is still not ready to start reopening by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The US economy needs to significantly scale up its ability to test a much bigger chunk of the American population in order to reopen and start getting back to normal in the wake of the COVID-19 coronavirus.
  • That’s according to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who made the point in his newly published and always widely-read annual letter to shareholders.
  • During the coronavirus crisis, Amazon has been relied on — but also tested — more than ever before as customer needs of household essentials, among other products, has skyrocketed.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The chief executive of the sprawling Internet retailer that’s effectively propping up much of the US retail sector right now doesn’t think the country, which is still reeling from the effects of the coronavirus, is ready to reopen in a major way yet.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, in his newly published annual letter to shareholders, notes that regular testing “on a global scale, across all industries” is what would best help keep people safe going forward and go a long way towards getting the economy back up and running. For this to work, though, we need significantly more testing capacity than is available right now, he stresses.

A newly-discovered house-sized asteroid just zipped by Earth

%name A newly discovered house sized asteroid just zipped by Earth by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • An asteroid up to 100 feet in diameter passed closely by Earth early on Wednesday morning.
  • The space rock named 2020 GH2 came closer to the Earth than the distance between the Earth and the Moon, making it a rather close call.
  • The object is now being tracked by scientists.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

NASA and other space agencies around the world are constantly on the lookout for potential threats that might appear out of the darkness of space. Objects like asteroid could cause devastation, especially if they’re large and hit us without warning. Thankfully, scientists are tracking thousands of them already, and find new ones all the time.

That being said, sometimes a space rock gets the jump on us, not appearing until it’s just days or even hours away from making a close pass of Earth. That was the case with 2020 GH2, an asteroid estimated to be as large as 100 feet across, which was initially discovered less than a week ago on April 11th but already made an incredibly close pass of our planet.

First Apple Store outside China to reopen this weekend after coronavirus closures

%name First Apple Store outside China to reopen this weekend after coronavirus closures by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The first Apple store outside China is set to reopen this weekend, following the iPhone maker’s sweeping move to temporarily shutter all of its stores outside China for an indefinite period as a result of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
  • The first non-China store reopening is in South Korea, where Apple has a single store in the city of Seoul.
  • South Korea has done a better job than almost any other country in the world in terms of testing and mitigation efforts related to the virus.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

It’s been almost a month now since Apple clarified that its closure of all stores outside of China as a result of the coronavirus pandemic would remain in place “until further notice,” but that won’t be the case for much longer — for one store, at least.

The iPhone maker’s first store outside China is set to reopen this weekend, on April 18, in South Korea, where Apple has a single store in the upscale Seoul district of Gangnam. Its reopening reflects the fact that South Korea has done a better job than almost any other country in fighting the coronavirus, in terms of both testing and containment efforts. And this report follows the news of a memo that Apple senior vice president of retail and people Deirdre O’Brien sent a few weeks ago, noting that stores in the US would remain closed until early May.

Crucial coronavirus antibody drug could be ready sooner than expected

%name Crucial coronavirus antibody drug could be ready sooner than expected by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • South Korea plans to conduct clinical trials for a COVID-19 drug based on antibodies later this year, aiming to have the medicine ready next year.
  • The country estimates that a vaccine won’t be ready until late 2021 at the earliest, or more likely sometime in 2022.
  • Other countries have used plasma from survivors of the novel coronavirus disease to treat severe COVID-19 cases.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Doctors have been treating COVID-19 with a wide range of therapies, attempting to prevent complications and attend to symptoms. However, there are no specific drugs for the novel coronavirus and that explains why you keep hearing about cures that may work on some patients and fail on others. Medical professionals are running several studies to see which drugs have a chance of improving COVID-19 prognosis, but nothing can move too quickly in this regard. Vaccines will ultimately be the only way to prevent infection and hopefully eradicate the disease, but we’ll have to wait another 18 months to get them. Before that happens, South Korea might have a COVID-19 drug based on the only type of cure that works right now: Antibody treatment.

  • NASA needs new designs for pint-sized rover payloads that it can send to the Moon.
  • The space agency wants miniaturized hardware capable of scouring the lunar surface for resources including water, iron, and methane.
  • The deadline to submit your concept is June 8th.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

NASA is headed back to the Moon and it’s doing so sooner rather than later. The Artemis missions will eventually see astronauts return to the lunar surface — whether that will happen by 2024, as planned, is anybody’s guess — but tiny, high-tech machines will also be a big part of the agency’s push to explore Earth’s friendly neighbor.

Now, as NASA gears up and prepares for the missions that will support human exploration and discovery on the Moon, it’s asking for your help to design pint-sized science payloads that will make these new adventures a success.

Pregnant women might pass coronavirus to unborn babies

%name Pregnant women might pass coronavirus to unborn babies by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • A newborn in Peru tested positive for the novel coronavirus, prompting doctors to conclude COVID-19 was transmitted from his mother.
  • Other studies have shown that vertical transmission might occur, although it’s unclear how or why it can happen.
  • Transmission from mother to fetus hasn’t been widely observed, and only a few cases may have been registered so far.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The novel coronavirus virus spreads primarily by contact with microscopic droplets containing the virus from an individual. Said droplets could be ejected via a cough or sneeze by the infected person, and a healthy person nearby could inhale them. The same droplets could land on various surfaces and objects or they might end up on someone else’s hands, and they could reach the eyes, nose, or mouth of the healthy person. But there may be another way COVID-19 spreads, and that’s from a mother to her unborn baby. The newest reported case comes from Peru, but studies have shown similar events in other countries.
