  • Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson were among the first celebrities to announce a positive coronavirus, having contracted the deadly COVID-19 virus in Australia where Hanks was shooting a film.
  • In an interview with CBS This Morning, her first about the virus, Wilson explains the physical toll it took on the couple, as well as what happened when she was given the drug that President Trump keeps touting as a “game-changer.”

It was probably only fitting this past weekend that for the first Saturday Night Live show to air since the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic temporarily suspended production back in March, that Tom Hanks would be asked to come on board as the comforting, reassuring host audiences needed right now.

That’s because he and his wife Rita Wilson were among the first celebrities to announce they’d tested positive for the virus, which they contracted while in Australia where Hanks was filming a role in director Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming Elvis Presley biopic. “Ever since being diagnosed,” Hanks joked during his monologue (which you can watch here), “I have been more like America’s dad than ever before. Since no one wants to be around me very long and I make people uncomfortable.” Along those same lines, as anyone who follows Hanks on social media can attest, he’s certainly dealt with the virus with a healthy dose of humor and good cheer, although his wife Rita Wilson has given a new interview in which she details the harsh physical toll the virus took on the couple — for which she also said she was administered chloroquine, the drug that President Trump has consistently touted as a “game-changer.”

  • A new COVID-19 study that revealed the loss of smell and taste during is a likely symptom of the novel coronavirus infection also found evidence that says a sore throat isn’t necessarily associated with the disease.
  • Researchers at UC San Diego Health found that patients who included a sore throat among their symptoms were more likely to be COVID-19-negative.

A new study that tried to determine whether one of the strangest novel coronavirus symptoms is statistically relevant for screening found that people who experience the loss of smell and taste are more likely to be COVID-19 positive than to have a different illness. The sensory impairment has been associated with COVID-19 in various countries, with physicians observing the symptom in many of their patients. Researchers looked at the olfactory tissue and determined that the SARS-CoV-2 virus can attach itself to specific cells just as quickly as it binds to lung cells.

The researchers from UC San Diego Health also determined that patients who recover from COVID-19 will get their senses of smell and taste back anywhere between two and four weeks following the infection. But they also made another startling discovery about one of the symptoms you might associate with COVID-19: A sore throat doesn’t always point to a COVID-19 infection.

Police are reminding people in lockdown to wear pants when checking the mail

  • Police in Maryland issue warning to residents who leave their home without pants on.
  • The tongue-in-cheek bulletin was posted on Facebook, where it has gotten a lot of attention.
  • Getting dressed and maintaining your daily routines is a good thing to focus on if you’re feeling a bit out of sorts while in lockdown, so embrace pants.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The novel coronavirus pandemic has changed our lives in unexpected and dramatic ways. Social distancing and stay-at-home orders are new to all of us, and adjusting to this new (hopefully temporary) way of life can be difficult. For some people that are now spending each and every day at home, pants have seemingly become an optional accessory.

Police in Taneytown, Maryland, aren’t too keen on this new trend and have apparently seen one too many pantsless residents waltzing around outside their homes. In a new Facebook post, the police department issues a friendly but stern reminder that you should definitely wear pants when leaving the house, even if it’s only to check the mail.

We’ll show you how to get Echo Dots for $25 each

%name We’ll show you how to get Echo Dots for $25 each by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Amazon’s big Echo sale last week had a number of great deals, including the new and improved Amazon Echo smart speaker at its lowest price ever.
  • The Echo Dot was on sale as well, but it only got a $10 discount for most of the week.
  • All of Amazon’s deals from that big Echo sale are now over, including the discount on the popular Echo Dot — but we’re going to show you how to save even more on the Echo Dot and get one within a few dollars of its all-time low price.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Amazon recently shifted most of its attention away from nonessential products so that it can free up as much capacity as possible to deliver medical supplies to hospitals and local governments. Of course, the company hasn’t entirely moved away from nonessential products. Amazon devices in particular have been seeing great discounts over the past few months, with a new big sale popping up each week.

Last week, Amazon’s Echo speakers and Echo Show smart displays went on sale with some wonderfully deep discounts. The Echo was a particularly great buy since it was available at its lowest price ever, and other deals offered discounts up to $50. The deal on Amazon’s popular Echo Dot wasn’t that great though, since it only had a $10 discount for most of the week.

All those deals are over now, which is a bummer if you happened to miss out. If you have your eye on a few new Echo Dot speakers though, it turns out that missing that sale is a blessing in disguise. While last week’s deals are indeed long gone, Amazon just snuck a bunch of Certified Refurbished Echo Dot smart speakers back in stock and they’re on sale for just $24.99 apiece, with all three color options currently available.

Certified Refurbished Echo Dot (3rd Gen) – Smart speaker with Alexa – Charcoal or Sandstone: $24.99

For those unaware, Amazon’s Certified Refurbished program is awesome. Many of the products included in the program are just basic returns, and Amazon thoroughly inspects every single device it certifies. They’re all guaranteed to look and function like new, and they even have the same exact warranty that a brand new version would have. And of course if you’re not happy with your purchase for whatever reason, the standard return policy applies so you can send it back for a refund.

If you’re in the market for an Echo Dot (or several), you’d have to be crazy to pass up this sale. $24.99 is within $2.99 of the Echo Dot’s lowest price of all time from Prime Day and Black Friday last year, so this is one of the best deals ever on the Echo Dot!

17-year cicadas are about to invade the East Coast

%name 17 year cicadas are about to invade the East Coast by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Cicadas on a 17-year life cycle will emerge from the ground in several states this spring.
  • After spending 17 years underground, the bugs will crawl up, perch on trees, and transition to winged adults.
  • This year’s brood — Brood IX — can be found in North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

In many places around the United States, summer just wouldn’t be the same without the occasional hum of a cicada buzzing off the in the distance. The noisy insects are either a harmless curiosity or a total nuisance depending on what area of the country you live in and the specific species of cicada that reside there. Folks in Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia will see far more of the bugs than usual in 2020.

Species of periodical cicadas maintain long brood cycles, only emerging every 13 or 17 years. There are over a dozen of these types of cicada broods, and Brood IX hasn’t been seen since 2003. That means it’s going to be a very noisy summer for the counties where the bugs are destined to appear.

Just hours after unveiling the 2nd-generation iPhone SE, Apple has released a new developer beta for both iOS and iPadOS. The second beta for iOS 13.4.5 contains the typical bug fixes and improvements, and as this is likely to be one of the last — if not the last — significant updates before iOS 14 arrives this summer, we are not expecting any major changes or additions. From what we know about iOS 13.4.5, it will allow Apple Music subscribers to share songs they’re listening to on Instagram Stories and Facebook Stories with the tap of a button.

How are these $24 home cameras better than $200 Nest Cams?

%name How are these $24 home cameras better than $200 Nest Cams? by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Amazon is offering great deals on not two of the best options out there when it comes to home security cameras, the Wyze Cam and the YI Home Camera 3.
  • Both currently priced at around $24, the cameras offer features that match pricey high-end rivals at a small fraction of the cost.
  • At that price, you can buy eight of either one of these great home camera models and still spend less than you would on a single home security camera from some top brands.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

It’s difficult to focus on anything other than the novel coronavirus outbreak right now, and that’s certainly understandable. It’s the most important thing happening in the world and it will continue to be for months and months to come. The United States now has more confirmed COVID-19 cases than any other country in the world and that’s in spite of the fact that only a fraction of people exhibiting symptoms can get tested since there’s still such a shortage on coronavirus tests. It’s bad and getting worse, but we also have to remember that life goes on and we have more than just the coronavirus to protect ourselves and our families from.

Amazon has two great deals right now on home security cameras that are just as good as a $200 Nest Cam for a tiny fraction of the price. The first is the Wyze Cam, which has all main features you might want as well as 14 days of free cloud storage for between $24 and $26 per camera. The second one is on the Yi Home Camera 3, which costs about the same amount but has some more advanced features as well as a 6-month free trial of YI’s cloud service. On top of that, you can get a 10% discount if you buy two right now.

Based on today’s deals, the Yi model is definitely the way to go. On top of all the main features you’d get with the Wyze Cam, the YI Home Camera 3 also includes advanced AI features like person detection and even sound analytics. The downside is that you only get free 7-day cloud storage for 6 months, and after that you’ll have to subscribe to YI’s cloud service if you want to keep using the cloud. $24.49 for all those features is still a crazy price though, and that price drops to $22.04 each if you buy two.

YI Smart Home Camera 3 w/ 6-Month Cloud Service, AI-Powered 1080p 2.4G Wi-Fi Indoor Security Ca…: $22.04 – $24.49 (use code GAXSJC8C)

As for the Wyze Cam 1080p HD smart home camera, it’s always a great value and it comes with 14 days of free cloud storage for free. That’s not a limited-time trial, mind you — you’ll enjoy free cloud storage for as long as you own your cameras. As we also mentioned, Wyze cameras are still shipping out right away on Amazon despite the retailer’s shift in focus away from nonessentials. You’ll pay $25.98 for one camera or $23.77 if you by them in 2-packs, and they’ll be on your doorstep in just a few days.

Waze has new features to help you navigate the coronavirus crisis

%name Waze has new features to help you navigate the coronavirus crisis by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Waze announced new features for its popular navigation app that could help users and authorities during the novel coronavirus pandemic.
  • Google’s subsidiary plans to highlight stores that offer no-contact deliveries and display COVID-19 testing locations.
  • Waze also analyzed anonymized driving stats for various regions, proving that social distancing measures have been respected.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

You might be driving less during the novel coronavirus health crisis, but you still need those navigation apps on your phone. Even if you’re not driving at all, they could still come in handy. Apple Maps is preparing to display COVID-19 testing sites on its maps, a feature Google Maps should replicate soon. Google’s app has other interesting perks that can come in handy during this time. The app shows you which restaurants are delivering food and lets you place orders with some of them as well. It also lets business owners provide updated information about their stores. Google Maps now includes COVID-19 notifications that pop up if you’re searching for a hospital or doctor nearby, reminding you not to drop in unannounced if you suspect that you’re infected. Both Apple and Google have localization sites that offer anonymous data about navigation and commuting during the coronavirus lockdowns.

With all that in mind, you shouldn’t be surprised to find out that one of the most popular navigation apps out there has developed several features to help users during the outbreak. That’s Waze, of course, Google’s other popular mobile mapping app.

Apple Watch Series 5 is up to $100 off at Amazon

%name Apple Watch Series 5 is up to $100 off at Amazon by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The Apple Watch Series 5 is the latest and greatest smartwatch from Apple and it packs a number of nifty new features that owners of the device really love.
  • As is often the case with Apple products, all those new bells and whistles come with a hefty price tag that is out of reach for many potential buyers.
  • Amazon is offering deep discounts on a number of the best-selling Apple Watch Series 5 configurations, with savings up to $100 and prices starting at less than $408.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

It pretty much goes without saying that every new generation of an Apple product is better than all the generations that preceded it. Apple’s not going to spend all that time and money developing new devices that are inferior, after all. That said, some upgrades are more substantial than others and people who own an Apple Watch Series 5 tend to boat about it more than most.

Compared to early versions of the Apple Watch, the Series 5 model is definitely better in every way. It’s far faster and more powerful thanks to the 64-bit dual-core S5 processor that is up to two times faster than the S3 chipset that powers the only other model that’s still available, the Apple Watch Series 3. It also has a larger AMOLED display with thinner bezels for a much better look, as well as a new always-on feature so you don’t have to wait for your watch face to light up to see the time and all your beloved complications.

Heart rate monitoring is of course still a central feature of the Apple Watch, but the Series 5 also adds a built-in ECG app that’s unlike anything that has come before it thanks to electrical and optical heart sensors. It can call emergency services if you fall and warn you about an irregular heart rate, and so much more. Heck, it’s even “swimproof” so you can wear it in the pool or shower and not have to worry about it getting damaged.

Apple Watch Series 5 (GPS, 44mm) – Space Gray Aluminum Case with Black Sport Band: $407.55

Needless to say, all that comes with a fairly steep price tag that can reach well over $1,000 depending on the model you choose. That said, Amazon is offering some fantastic discounts that can save you a bunch of money on Apple’s latest and greatest smartwatches. Prices start at just $407.55 for an Apple Watch Series 5 (GPS, 44mm) with a Space Gray Aluminum Case with Black Sport Band, which normally sells for $429. Note that in some cases like this one, there’s an additional discount that’s applied by Amazon at checkout.

If you want to upgrade to a model with GPS and Cellular data, you’ll find Apple Watch Series 5 (GPS + Cellular, 40mm) models starting at $449, a $50 discount, and Stainless Steel models are up to $100 off. That deep $100 discount drops several prices to all-time lows, but some configurations are already selling out. In other words, hurry up and grab one if you want to avoid missing out.
