Leak says AirPower could be the key to the first portless iPhone

  • Apple engineers are supposedly working on a new version of the AirPower, which is a crucial device for a future iPhone without ports.
  • A YouTube leaker says the new AirPower prototype features the same chip as the iPhone X to dynamically manage power and heat.
  • It’s unclear whether this accessory would be ready in time for the iPhone 12’s launch, but the first images and renders of the revived AirPower have already leaked.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

When Apple unveiled the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X in September 2017, the company also announced a universal wireless charging mat called AirPower. That was the year the iPhone finally got support for wireless charging. But AirPower was meant to be more than a “dumb” wireless charger requiring you to place a product in the exact right spot. It could also recharge multiple devices wirelessly at the same time, including the iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods.

However, the accessory wasn’t ready in early 2018, and then Apple went dark. Finally, in March 2019, the AirPower was canceled. The problem with the AirPower, according to reports, was it was overheating.

But it turns out the project hasn’t been completely abandoned. The AirPower device is still very much in the works, a leaker says, and it’s a critical component when it comes to Apple’s plans of making a next-gen phone.

The 10 hottest Netflix shows on everyone’s quarantine binge list right now

%name The 10 hottest Netflix shows on everyone’s quarantine binge list right now by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • This week’s list of the most-watched shows on Netflix includes a mix of the familiar and the new, with shows like Tiger King still topping the list along with critically acclaimed global favorites like Money Heist.
  • The list of what’s hot on Netflix right now comes via data shared with BGR from the team at the streaming search engine service Reelgood.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

One of the most popular Netflix series worldwide right now — no, we’re not about to make the umpteenth reference to the docu-series about the crazy tiger man whose glowering face has become a ubiquitous presence across the internet — is a Spanish-language show that’s on its fourth season and has won pretty much every award a TV show can garner in its home country. The show is Money Heist, or La Casa de Papel, and this drama about a group of career criminals who set out to pull off an epic bank heist became the most popular non-English language show in Netflix history, according to the streamer.

The show, which just released its fourth season on Netflix, is so popular that it’s also ascended to a rarefied status that not every TV show can achieve: It’s spawned countless internet memes, and police in Mumbai have even turned to a quote from a character in the show (The Professor) to scold violators of the coronavirus lockdown there (“So how about we forget common sense?”). All of which is to say, Money Heist was unsurprisingly the most-watched show on Netflix in our most recent rankings of the hottest shows that the streamers’ customers have been bingeing while in quarantine.

WHO: 3 of 70 coronavirus vaccine candidates are in clinical trials

%name WHO: 3 of 70 coronavirus vaccine candidates are in clinical trials by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The World Health Organization listed 70 vaccine candidates for the novel coronavirus, a significant increase from the figure announced three weeks ago.
  • The large number of candidates, as well as the various types of vaccines that researchers are proposing, increase the likelihood of success.
  • Only 3 of the 70 candidates have reached clinical trials at this time — two in the US and one in China and Hong Kong.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Many things went wrong when it came to the initial response to the novel coronavirus in several countries. The rest of the world had a head start of a couple of months on China, but failed to adequately prepare for an epidemic. Social distancing measures were instituted too late in some regions, and many governments found themselves scrambling for essential protective equipment, COVID-19 tests, and life-saving ventilators. At the time of this writing, the world had over 1.84 million confirmed cases and nearly 118,000 fatalities as a result.

But the past few months have also brought plenty of good news. COVID-19 research accelerated at an unprecedented rate. Doctors and scientists have sequenced the genome of the virus and tracked its mutations, they studied the way it attacks the human body, and they found ways to fight off infection and help the immune system battle the illness. Researchers are already trialing several drugs that can speed up the recovery of patients as well, and they’re devising several vaccines that can help eradicate the disease in the coming years.

How Amazon is scrambling to keep up with customer demand during the coronavirus pandemic

%name How Amazon is scrambling to keep up with customer demand during the coronavirus pandemic by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Amazon has faced the toughest challenge to its business model during the coronavirus pandemic, as customers flood the internet retailer with orders and stretch its capacity to the limit.
  • To help alleviate the strain and better handle demand for things like Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market, the company has announced a number of steps including changes to how delivery times are distributed, and it’s also hiring tens of thousands of additional workers.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The convenience of e-commerce, the fast and free shipping for Prime members, and the seemingly endless selection of products to choose from are among the things that Amazon has trained its customers for years to take for granted. Whatever you wanted, with just a few clicks, it’ll be on your doorstep in a matter of days. That is, until the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic arrived and completely upended people’s expectations about the degree to which they can rely on Amazon, while the internet retailer’s business model has been stretched to the limit thanks to quarantined customers flooding it with orders.

If you try to order a normal product right now — anything from a book to a pair of jeans — chances are Amazon is going to tell you the order can’t be shipped until May. That’s because the company is prioritizing the shipment of essentials during the pandemic — not all of which, by the way, are products you can even order. For example, the company won’t let you order the Purell hand soap at this listing, which carries the following message instead of an “Add to Cart” button: “Prioritized for organizations on the frontlines responding to COVID-19.”

Windows 10 adds drag-and-drop file transfers for Samsung phones

  • Microsoft and Samsung continue to strengthen their partnership with a new feature that will allow Galaxy device owners to drag and drop files to and from Windows 10 PCs.
  • Samsung phones running Link To Windows version 1.5 or higher are supported.
  • Windows 10 PCs and Samsung phones need to be on the same WiFi network.

One of the major benefits of joining the Apple ecosystem is the relative simplicity with which most of the company’s devices and services connect to one another. A text on your phone will instantaneously appear on your Mac and iPad. A song or movie you bought on iTunes on a Mac will be accessible on your phone, tablet, and Apple TV. Features like these are part of the reason why Apple fans are so dedicated to the brand, and while Microsoft and Samsung cannot compete quite yet, the two companies are attempting to provide a similarly cohesive ecosystem.

Scientists still can’t decide if face masks actually do anything

%name Scientists still can’t decide if face masks actually do anything by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Science can’t decide how effective surgical masks and homemade alternatives are at preventing the spread of coronavirus.
  • The CDC suggests making your own masks at home, but researchers can’t say if they’ll do any good.
  • Masks are more effective when worn by sick people than healthy people, the data suggests.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

It’s now been months since the coronavirus outbreak reached the point of a pandemic, and we somehow still don’t have a clear answer on how effective face masks are at preventing its spread. As LiveScience reports, a new batch of studies into the efficacy of various types of masks does little to settle the debate.

It was just days after the novel coronavirus hit the shores of the United States that health experts were falling all over themselves to make declarations about the use of protective face masks. Initially, experts asked that everyday people avoid buying masks meant for use by doctors and healthcare professionals since those are the people who need them the most.

Motorola will finally reveal a new flagship phone on April 22nd

%name Motorola will finally reveal a new flagship phone on April 22nd by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Motorola announced on Monday that it will reveal its next flagship smartphone on April 22nd.
  • Motorola was expected to show off the Edge+ at Mobile World Congress 2020, but the February event was canceled due to fears surrounding the novel coronavirus.
  • In addition to the Edge+, Motorola is also expected to announce a midrange Edge device.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

It’s been three years since Motorola launched the Moto Z2 Force, but it’s been even longer since the brand was truly relevant. Other than the foldable Razr that came out in February, Motorola hasn’t made headlines very often since it was sold to Lenovo in 2014. But after an extended absence, the company will attempt to make a splash this month with the reveal of a flagship phone that will compete with the iPhone 11 and Galaxy S20.

On Monday, Motorola announced that it will be hosting a “Flagship Launch E-vent” on April 22nd at 11 AM CDT. The Motorola Edge+ will presumably be the main attraction, as the phone was initially expected to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress in February before the novel coronavirus necessitated the cancellation of the event. In the weeks since, the phone has leaked extensively, and Motorola might be out of surprises by next week.

CDC: Coronavirus might travel up to 13 feet in the air

%name CDC: Coronavirus might travel up to 13 feet in the air by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • A new study published on the CDC’s coronavirus website says the SARS-CoV-2 virus can travel up to 13 feet in the air.
  • The study showed that several everyday objects in hospitals contained traces of the virus from COVID-19 patients and medical staff.
  • Coronavirus traces were found on the soles of doctors’ shoes and in the pharmacy of the hospital where there were no patients.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Social distancing guidelines for the novel coronavirus differ depending on who you ask. The World Health Organization (WHO) says you should stay 3 feet (1 meter) away from others to minimize the risk of infection. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends double that, or 6 feet (2 meters).

The idea is that the further you distance yourself from other people, the less likely it is that you will come in contact with virus-laden droplets from their saliva that can be ejected while coughing, talking, eating, etc. But according to a new study from China published on the CDC’s website, viral particles were discovered some 13 feet (4 meters) away from patients inside a hospital with controlled airflow.
