  • iOS 14 may allow users to preview an app’s interface even if they haven’t yet downloaded it.
  • Apple will unveil iOS 14 later this year at WWDC.
  • The coronavirus prompted Apple to cancel its in-person WWDC conference and instead put on an online-only event.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

A new report from 9to5Mac reveals that iOS 14 may make it a lot easier for users to discover and explore new third-party apps. According to the report, a newly unearthed API from a recent build of iOS 14 suggests that iOS 14 will enable users to use a QR code and subsequently experience limited aspects of an application’s user experience without having to download the app in the first place.

The report notes that the API is known as “Clips” and, as the name implies, will let developers offer “interactive and dynamic content from their apps even if you haven’t installed them.” Of course, developers will be able to choose what portion of an app will be made available to users in the form of a “floating card that shows a native user interface instead of a web page.”

FDA warns that Miracle Mineral Solution won’t cure coronavirus

  • The FDA warns that bleach won’t cure the coronavirus in a letter targeting websites that sell a form of the chemical under the name Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS).
  • Chlorine dioxide and other types of bleach do not kill the novel coronavirus, but can cause additional health problems if ingested.
  • There are no COVID-19 cures or vaccines at this point, and you can’t take anything to prevent an infection.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

In late January, when the novel coronavirus outbreak still looked manageable, we told you the coronavirus can’t be cured with bleach, or anything else for that matter. Some sites were selling bleach cures for the virus at the time. Nothing has changed since then. There is no miracle cure for COVID-19. The only way we’ll be immune to the disease is to either fight off an infection or get a vaccine. And some sites are still selling the same drugs.

If you hear of any Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS) cure that can treat the new infectious disease, you should stay away from it. MMS is a variation of bleach (chlorine dioxide) which can be very dangerous if ingested. And the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the Federal Trade Commission have issued a stern warning to several sites promoting the supposed COVID-19 treatment

The device that you see in the image at the top of this article is the updated Ring Alarm Keypad, which features a completely new design and one-touch buttons that allow you to quickly request the police, the fire department, or medical assistance in your area with a single tap.

Ring also updated the Motion Detectors and Contact Sensors that ship with the kit to be smaller and easier to mount in any room of your home, and where the old hardware was a shiny plastic, the devices that ship with the new alarm kit have a matte finish that will likely blend in better with the surfaces you place them on.

This is how much damage you can cause by ignoring social distancing

%name This is how much damage you can cause by ignoring social distancing by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • A new CDC case study has revealed the impact just one person can have when they don’t adhere to social distancing guidelines during the coronavirus pandemic.
  • One family member with mild symptoms attended two family gatherings in Chicago and ended up infecting 16 family members with the coronavirus, resulting in three deaths.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

For anyone out there who’s been slacking a bit on their social distancing and quarantine behaviors lately, even though you may be starting to hear that the nation is seeing a few “glimmers of hope” in our coronavirus data, this one is for you.

How much damage can one person really do by not adhering to those social distancing guidelines, you might be tempted to ask yourself. A new case study the CDC conducted of a Chicago family provides the answer. In short, one family member displaying apparently mild symptoms of the virus showed up to a funeral, and that set off a chain reaction of infection within the family — resulting in 16 family members being infected, as well as three, sadly, dying from the virus.

Expert warns obesity is a major risk factor for coronavirus patients

%name Expert warns obesity is a major risk factor for coronavirus patients by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Obesity is a major risk factor for COVID-19 patients, France’s top epidemiologist says.
  • Novel coronavirus patients who suffer from other medical conditions, obesity included, may experience more severe COVID-19 illnesses.
  • The expert warned that even young COVID-19 patients who are overweight are at risk.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The global COVID-19 death toll approaches 95,000 as of Thursday afternoon out of the more than 1.5 million confirmed cases. The novel coronavirus needed just 75 days to take that many lives, and the worst may be yet to come. Social distancing measures are in place in several countries, and they’ve helped keep the numbers down. Some governments managed to flatten the curve through aggressive testing, contact tracing, and isolation procedures, while others were able to lower the fatality rate. But countries like the US, Spain, Italy, and France continue to suffer. They account for nearly 830,000 cases between them, and almost 60,000 deaths.

Most people who are infected with the novel coronavirus will survive. Some are entirely asymptomatic. Others experience a milder version of the disease, and most people will never be admitted to a hospital. But the elderly and patients who have underlying medical conditions are most at risk of developing complications. And obesity can impact the COVID-19 prognostic severely, France’s top epidemiologist says.

  • Extra precautions were taken ahead of the launch to ensure the crew had no contact with anyone who might be carrying the novel coronavirus.

The coronavirus pandemic might be causing all kinds of delays across just about every industry, but Russia’s Roscosmos isn’t letting a global health crisis prevent it from sending humans into space. Early Thursday morning a trio of space travelers rode a Russian Soyuz spacecraft skyward toward their destination at the International Space Station.

The mission included NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy as well as a pair of Russian cosmonauts, Anatoli Ivanishin and Ivan Vagner, both of Roscosmos. The trio will replace three members of the current ISS expedition who are scheduled to depart the space station in just over a week’s time.

Pixel 4a specs leak in full weeks ahead of launch

%name Pixel 4a specs leak in full weeks ahead of launch by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Google is expected to launch the new Pixel 4a budget phone in the coming weeks, and a new report reveals the handset’s rumored specs.
  • The $399 Pixel 4a will come in a single size and feature mid-range hardware, like its predecessor.
  • It’s unclear when Google will launch the new phone, given that the I/O 2020 developer conference has been canceled over coronavirus fears.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

It’s no secret that Google will launch an affordable Pixel phone in the coming weeks. We’ve already seen plenty of Pixel 4a leaks detailing its design, specifications, and price tag. The phone should have been unveiled at Google’s yearly developer conference, but there won’t be an I/O event this year, not even online.

Still, Google is expected to launch the cheap new Pixel 4a at some point in the coming months. But by the time the actual announcement comes, there won’t be any secrets left, as has been the case with virtually every Pixel phone of the past few years. And now, a brand new leak has spoiled all of the Pixel 4a’s specs.

Google bans employees from using Zoom on work laptops

%name Google bans employees from using Zoom on work laptops by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Zoom has become one of the most popular video conferencing services in the world as the coronavirus pandemic forces us to find new ways to communicate with one another.
  • Zoom is also riddled with security and privacy vulnerabilities, which is why Google has decided to bar its employees from using the software on their work computers.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

One of the more interesting stories to arise from the novel coronavirus outbreak has been the ascent of Zoom. The once-niche video conferencing software has suddenly become the go-to solution for millions of people all around the world that want to keep in touch with their friends, their family, and even their coworkers. Free users were even willing to put up with the 40-minute time limit, but as researchers dug into the software, it became increasingly clear that the Zoom video calling service was a breeding ground for privacy issues and safety concerns.

First came “zoombombing,” which is when uninvited guests burst into your meeting unannounced. That was just the tip of the iceberg, as we later discovered that email addresses and profile pictures were being leaked, the service’s encryption was subpar, and thousands of private Zoom videos could be found online.

Researchers find a way to use Face ID while wearing a coronavirus mask

%name Researchers find a way to use Face ID while wearing a coronavirus mask by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • To prevent the coronavirus from spreading, the CDC now recommends people put on a mask or face covering when going outside.
  • This has made it difficult, if not impossible, for users to unlock Face ID and access their iPhones.
  • Researchers have recently discovered an imperfect solution to this problem.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

When Apple abandoned Touch ID for Face ID with the introduction of the iPhone X, not everyone was completely on board. Touch ID, after all, was incredibly quick and reliable. As a result, the idea that Apple was going to replace it with facial recognition technology that was seemingly brought back from the future seemed like a risky move at best.

In reality, though, the rollout of Face ID was largely smooth. In fact, there’s a case to be made that Face ID has long been the most reliable facial recognition software out on the market. With that said, the recent coronavirus outbreak has made using Face ID a little bit tricky given that many people are now donning face masks when they go outside.

Scientists warn that Trump is wrong: Warm weather won’t kill coronavirus

%name Scientists warn that Trump is wrong: Warm weather won’t kill coronavirus by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Members of the National Academy of Sciences committee sent a letter to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy warning the administration that warmer weather won’t stop the spread of the novel coronavirus.
  • President Trump said in the past that warmer weather will make the virus disappear “miraculously,” starting in April.
  • COVID-19 caseloads in countries with warmer climates, as well as coronavirus cases from warm US states like California and Florida, prove the virus can be very infectious regardless of the weather.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

President Trump has said on more than one occasion that warmer weather will kill the novel coronavirus. He’s wrong. “When it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away,” he said at a rally in New Hampshire on February 10th. The US had only 12 cases at the time, although countries from warmer climates, including Australia and Singapore, were providing direct evidence that warmer weather would not kill the virus or reduce its contagiousness. In total, there were more than 42,000 cases in the world on that day, most of them in mainland China.

Two months and nearly 1.5 million cases later, it’s increasingly clear that weather alone can’t defeat the virus. The increasing caseloads in Florida and California also prove that point. Scientists have even more data on the SARS-CoV-2 survivability in various environments, and some of them have sent the White House an official letter to warn that a heatwave will do little to stop the COVID-19 spread.
