More than 20 COVID-19 vaccine candidates are in development right now, and the World Health Organization (WHO) said it will work on an initiative to make the new drugs widely available once they’re approved. Some of these potential cures are already in Phase 1 of human trials, and some of them could be ready for emergency use as soon as this fall. But they may take up to 18 months to be ready for the general population.

Inoculating as many people as possible with a drug meant to provide immunity to a terrible illness may seem like a no-brainer. Still, there may be people out there who would oppose this life-saving treatment. Some anti-vaxxers have even claimed the pandemic wasn’t real in the past few weeks, but we have undoubtedly reached a point where nobody can deny the seriousness of the novel coronavirus. Every year, I tell myself I’m going to catch up on all the Academy Award-winning movies I missed the first time around, and every year, I fail to follow through with this plan. 2020 has been no different. Of the nine Best Picture nominees at the 2020 Oscars, I’ve only seen one, but it happened to be the one that took the trophy. I am, of course, talking about Parasite — the suspenseful, surprising film directed by Bong Joon Ho that took the world by storm.

If you were one of the many people who were confused that a relatively unknown South Korean director managed to beat the likes of Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, and Greta Gerwig, you have now been given the opportunity to clear that confusion up, as Parasite began streaming on Hulu this week. There are plenty of places to buy or rent a digital copy of Parasite, but Hulu is your only option if you want to stream the best movie of 2019.

• SpaceX is planning a launch in its Starlink satellite program for April 16th, Spaceflight Now reports.
• A SpaceX Falcon 9 will send dozens of tiny Starlink satellites into Earth orbit where they will join hundreds of others that have already been placed there in past missions.

The coronavirus pandemic has impacted just about every industry imaginable, and the business of commercial spaceflight is no different. Despite that, SpaceX is doing its best to keep on schedule, and that means ensuring that it slings as many of its astronomer-aggravating Starlink satellites into space as possible.

The company’s next Starlink launch is currently slated for April 16th at the earliest and will take place from the launch facility at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. As is typically the case with Starlink missions, we’re expecting SpaceX to release dozes of its pint-sized communications satellites simultaneously, and SpaceX will likely be live streaming the launch and deployment of its hardware.

This news is going to strike some of you as counterintuitive, particularly if you’ve soured on Facebook over the last year or so thanks to its litany of privacy and security woes. By now, most of you are probably aware that the video conferencing software Zoom has experienced a taste of that same backlash over the last couple of weeks, as its popularity skyrocketed thanks to millions of people stuck at home because of the coronavirus. Unfortunately, as the service experienced an astounding jump in users — from 10 million in December to 200 million in March — that growth has been accompanied by one controversy after another. Everything from strangers annoyingly “zoombombing” peoples’ video calls to the disclosure that email addresses and photos of some Zoom users had leaked, with additional PR nightmares including the fact that some call data had been sent through China for non-Chinese users, as well as the Zoom iOS app quietly sending analytics data to Facebook.

Now, Zoom has called in some help as it works through these and other security and privacy issues: That help is coming in the form of Facebook’s former chief security officer, Alex Stamos.

The best way to avoid the novel coronavirus is to stay at home for as long as possible. Wash your hands often, disinfect surfaces, and wear face masks of any kind when going out for supplies. If you think you’ve come in contact with COVID-19 patients, you should go into self-isolation for two weeks and keep an eye out for symptoms. This could impact your work, but it’s a recommendation that can save lives.

Social distancing will limit the spread of the virus and prevent the collapse of hospitals, but some people still have to go to work, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is about to loosen back-to-work guidelines for people who have been isolating themselves after being exposed to the virus.

• SpaceX is officially retiring the first version of its Dragon cargo capsule after a successful return to Earth over the weekend.

SpaceX’s Crew Dragon is about to make history — if it stays on schedule — by sending two NASA astronauts to the International Space Station for the first time in May. But long before the dream of a crewed mission to the ISS was in SpaceX’s planner, the cargo version of the Dragon capsule was already making regular rounds between Earth and the orbiting laboratory.

Now, having already proved its worth as a platform for delivering goods into space, the first version of the SpaceX Dragon cargo capsule is being officially retired from use. It’s a major milestone for SpaceX, and a sign of what’s to come. A new version of Dragon will soon become the premier vehicle for hauling supplies to the space station.

I know it’s a narrative that we hear every year, but the iPhone 12 was truly poised to be a monumental release for Apple. Especially in light of the fact that iPhone sales have been somewhat stagnant over the past few years, it was widely assumed that the iPhone 12 — the first iPhone with 5G support — was going to help boost year-over-year sales.

The coronavirus, however, may completely upend Apple’s plans. While it’s safe to assume that Apple will release the iPhone 12 in 2020, a September release is no longer a guarantee for a few reasons. For starters, there are questions as to whether or not the supply chain can sufficiently get up to speed in time for a September release. Second, travel restrictions involving China may have slightly pushed back milestones in the iPhone 12 development process.
