Boeing will have to reattempt failed Starliner test flight

  • Boeing will attempt another test flight to the International Space Station without crew members aboard its Starliner spacecraft, the company announced this week.
  • Late last year, Boeing’s Starliner failed to make it to the space station after a glitch caused the vehicle to burn too much fuel too early in the trip.
  • SpaceX’s Crew Dragon is still on schedule for its first crewed launch in May, making it the first vehicle in the Commercial Crew program to reach that milestone.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Late last year, Boeing’s Starliner was sent on a crucial test flight to the International Space Station. It didn’t hold any crew members, but it would likely have been the last uncrewed flight if things went smoothly. Well, they didn’t, and the spacecraft never made it to the space station. Now, Boeing is going to have to try again.

There had been some question as to whether NASA would take the shortcoming in stride and allow for a crewed test flight to commence without Boeing redoing the failed test. Now, after issuing dozens of corrective actions to the company, NASA has clearly made up its mind and Boeing will need to prove its expensive vehicle actually works as intended before NASA allows its astronauts to step onboard.

Germany wants to track coronavirus outbreaks with smartwatches

%name Germany wants to track coronavirus outbreaks with smartwatches by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Germany is looking to analyze data from smartwatches and fitness devices to track the emergence of new coronavirus outbreaks in the country.
  • Pulse, temperature, and sleep data would be collected anonymously from participating citizens to map the potential spread of new COVID-19 hot zones in the future.
  • Germany has conducted extensive coronavirus testing, which allowed it to keep the death toll in check compared to other European countries and the US. New screening measures might be required to relax social distancing measures.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

With over 103,000 cases as of Tuesday morning, Germany has the world’s fourth-largest COVID-19 caseload after the US, Spain, and Italy. But Germany’s management of the novel coronavirus outbreak stands out for the low number of fatalities compared with other regions. Germany’s nearly 1,900 COVID-19 deaths at the time of writing puts the country in tenth place for coronavirus fatalities.

The explanation for Germany’s success in keeping the mortality rate low is extensive testing combined with extreme social distancing measures. Implemented early, the testing protocols allowed Germany to catch coronavirus patients earlier than others. As a result, COVID-19 patients were isolated and treated earlier than those in other countries. The extensive testing campaign also explains why Germany’s total cases rose to over 100,000 in about a month.

Germany isn’t stopping with its ample COVID-19 screening attempts, though, as the country has kicked off a program that allows the collection of coronavirus-relevant data with the help of wearable devices like the Apple Watch.

%name Don’t miss tonight’s Super Pink Moon, the biggest supermoon of 2020 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Tonight’s Super Pink Moon will be the largest supermoon of 2020, with the Moon reaching its closest point to Earth, called perigee.
  • The Super Pink Moon will appear about 15% brighter than the normal-sized full moon, but you might not really notice the difference.
  • The April full moon is also called the Grass Moon and Egg Moon.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

This woeful year of 2020 hasn’t given us many reasons to celebrate. We’re in the midst of a global health crisis, people are isolating in their homes and fearing for their loved ones, and there’s really no telling when “normal” will return. It’s a bummer, but leave it to our Moon to give us a reason to get our minds off of our current predicament, as the biggest supermoon of the year is happening tonight.

The full moon of April is often called the Pink Moon, and tonight’s Pink Moon will be the closest the Moon will be to Earth during a full moon all year. That makes it a must-see for supermoon hunters and a genuinely interesting sight for anyone who wants to get their mind off of things for a bit.

Bill Gates thinks US coronavirus deaths will be lower than predicted

%name Bill Gates thinks US coronavirus deaths will be lower than predicted by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • We haven’t had much good news since the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak began, but there are starting to be faint glimmers of hope regarding what quickly became a global pandemic.
  • Measures like social distancing appear to be having an effect, around the US at least, and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates — whose charitable foundation focuses extensively on global health care — is now predicting that we should see the number of coronavirus cases start to level off by the end of this month if we keep adhering to these mitigation practices.
  • If we do that, Gates also thinks the number of coronavirus deaths will come in below the estimates that have been publicized from the White House.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Global health care is one of the many causes Bill Gates focuses on through his charitable foundation, so he naturally has had a lot to say about the current coronavirus pandemic — about the US response to it, the timetable for getting through it, and what the ultimate toll from it will be.

In line with a prediction he made during a Reddit AMA session a few weeks ago — that the US could turn a corner if we implemented a broad shutdown — he’s now estimating that the ultimate death toll from the novel virus in the US won’t be as bad as the numbers put out recently by the White House. President Trump just a few days ago noted that a range of deaths from the virus of between 100,000 and 240,000 people, as high as those numbers are, would be seen as a win for the US response and that all the other predicted scenarios result in much worse death counts.

  • Netflix announced a series of new parental controls features for its streaming service on Tuesday.
  • Parents now have the ability to remove individual shows and movies from a Netflix profile so that they won’t appear in any of the suggested lists or search results.
  • Auto play of episodes can also finally be turned off in kids profiles.

As the novel coronavirus outbreak forces millions of us to stay inside, streaming service usage has skyrocketed. We have so much time on our hands to watch shows and movies, as do the countless children staying home from school until the virus has been contained. But now that your kids are likely parked in front of the TV for hours every day, it’s more important than ever to monitor what they watch, especially if you’re in another room trying to get some work done. As such, Netflix’s latest parental control features couldn’t have come at a better time.

Doctors think coronavirus can attack the heart directly

%name Doctors think coronavirus can attack the heart directly by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Doctors think the novel coronavirus might affect the heart directly in some COVID-19 patients.
  • The virus might be damaging the heart even in patients who do not suffer from heart disease.
  • In some cases, patients were rushed to the emergency room with a heart attack diagnosis, but they turned out to be infected with the coronavirus.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

If you are rushed to the emergency room after experiencing what you thought was a heart attack, it turns out that it may have been the novel coronavirus. COVID-19 is a respiratory disease, with the virus primarily targeting the lungs. That’s why the most common symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, and difficulty breathing. But the longer this goes on, the more we learn about the virus.

Some patients may display early warning signs of COVID-19, like the loss of smell and/or taste. Others may come to the hospital with neurological warning signs. And doctors now think that some patients might be predisposed to heart damage after infection, which could be fatal.

Yet another study finds that Android security is total crap

  • A new study of Android apps has found that thousands seem to contain hidden backdoors that facilitate secret behavior, in what is but the latest reminder of how aggressively the Google Play Store continues to be targeted by sketchy app developers.
  • The study looked at 150,000 apps, including 100,000 of the most popular from Google’s proprietary app marketplace, as well as apps from Baidu and Samsung.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Thousands of Android apps have been found as part of a new study to contain hidden backdoors that facilitate secret behavior, including everything from changing user passwords to preventing users from accessing specific content that’s sometimes political in nature.

The study comes via researchers from Ohio State and New York Universities, as well as the Helmholtz Center for Information Security, and it took a look at 150,000 apps — the 100,000 most popular Google Play apps circa April 2019, plus 20,000 apps from Baidu as well as another 30,000 apps that Samsung pre-loads onto its devices. The focus was on two specific issues: To what extent do apps support secret behaviors, and is there an inherent danger of abuse.

The WHO wants coronavirus vaccines to be widely available ASAP

%name The WHO wants coronavirus vaccines to be widely available ASAP by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) says that coronavirus vaccine and cure research is advancing at “incredible speed.”
  • The WHO will soon announce an initiative to ensure that COVID-19 vaccines will be widely available in the future.
  • The WHO Director-General said that coronavirus vaccines and medicine should be deliverable to all affected countries.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The race for a COVID-19 vaccine is on, with multiple candidates having already reached human trials. Vaccines are the only treatment that could significantly reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus and eventually eradicate it. They should provide a boost to the immune system and kickstart a response that would prevent infection. Some of the scientists who are tracking the genetics of the SARS-CoV-2 think that a vaccine might have long-lasting effects too, as the virus isn’t showing significant mutations for the time being.

Even though they’re being fast-tracked to market, the vaccines won’t be ready for at least 12-18 months. Some think that near-final candidates might be ready as soon as this fall for emergency use, such as inoculating medical personnel and first responders, but that’s still months away from even being a possibility. The World Health Organization (WHO), said COVID-19 vaccine and treatment research has “accelerated at incredible speed.” But the WHO wants all countries to have access to vaccines when they’re ready, not just the richest ones.

Galaxy Z Flip with 5G support may be coming later this year

%name Galaxy Z Flip with 5G support may be coming later this year by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Samsung may release a Galaxy Z Flip with 5G support in 2020.
  • It’s not yet clear if the new Galaxy Z Flip will also support mmWave 5G.
  • Foldable smartphones haven’t taken the world by storm, but Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip remains the best we’ve seen to date.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Samsung’s initial foray into the world of foldable smartphones was nothing short of an embarrassment. If you recall, the company in 2019 was forced to delay the Galaxy Fold launch after nearly every single unit provided to reviewers broke down during testing. Even when the Fold did arrive in stores, it seemed to present more usability issues than it solved.

Fast forward a few months and Samsung managed to really step things up with the Galaxy Z Flip. In stark contrast to the Galaxy Fold, the Galaxy Z Flip opens up vertically instead of horizontally and, as a result, provides users with a much more natural user experience.
