Make sure you have one of these credit cards in your wallet for your next grocery run

%name Make sure you have one of these credit cards in your wallet for your next grocery run by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • While most of the US is under a quarantine or stay-at-home order of some kind right now as a result of the continued spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, essential businesses like grocery stores are one of the few remaining places left that people are allowed to go to outside their home.
  • Below, we present several credit card offers for what we think are the best options specifically for grocery spending.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Thanks to the coronavirus outbreak, it’s a pretty good bet that most people’s food-related spending has drastically changed in recent weeks. You might be ordering takeout and meal delivery even more than you were in the days before the virus-related shutdowns and quarantines, or you might have gone to the opposite extreme and are now spending heavily on on groceries to keep yourself stocked up for an extended period. Suffice it to say, most of us are probably spending well above what folks used to spend on food and groceries during a normal month, which amounted to about 10% of disposable income, according to the USDA.

In these strange times, it might be worth re-evaluating your personal credit card situation and making sure you have a rewards credit card in your wallet that maximizes one of the biggest line items of your personal budget, whether you head to the store to shop the aisles or press a few buttons online and have the groceries brought to your doorstep. Unlike travel credit cards, where the choices are wide and plentiful, there are only a handful of points-earning and cash-back cards that offer groceries as a solid bonus category, and many of the top choices come from one issuer — American Express. In this post, we’ll present some recommendations of the top credit cards that can earn rewards worth hundreds of dollars or more annually for the typical household. The larger your grocery budget, the more you stand to benefit from a rewards credit card tailored perfectly for grocery spending, whether you do that online or you happen to be one of those hardy souls venturing into physical stores right now.

These mating flies have been doing the nasty for 41 million years

%name These mating flies have been doing the nasty for 41 million years by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Mating flies frozen in time were found encased in amber for the past 41 million years.
  • The flies, still locked in their mating pose, were swallowed up by tree sap which then hardened into protective amber that preserved them and made it possible for paleontologists to study them.
  • The flies are just part of a new collection of amber-cased insects and arachnids found in sites from Australia and New Zealand.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Have you ever been caught in the act? You know the act I mean. I mean when someone walks in on you and your significant other during a beautiful moment of physical… activity. If you have, you know how traumatizing it can be, so just imagine the plight of these two flies which have spent the past 41 years locked in the mating position, just dreading the day when someone would finally stumble upon them.

Well, that day has come, and the unfortunate flies are now not only the subject of slack-jawed stares from the rest of the insect world, but they’re also the stars of a new research paper published in Scientific Reports. These two prehistoric bugs are never going to live it down.

Marvel is giving away dozens of free comics to read in quarantine

%name Marvel is giving away dozens of free comics to read in quarantine by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Marvel is giving fans free access to some of its most popular comic book story arcs to help keep them entertained while they’re stuck inside due to the coronavirus.
  • Dozens of Marvel comics will be free to read on Marvel Unlimited until May 4th, 2020.
  • Avengers vs. X-Men, Civil War, and the Dark Phoenix saga are all included.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become so ingrained in the pop culture consciousness over the last decade that it’s hard to even imagine going more than a year without seeing a new Marvel movie in theaters. But due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, that scenario becomes more likely by the day, with Black Widow already having been delayed indefinitely. As a reminder, the last MCU movie to hit theaters was Spider-Man: Far From Home in July 2019. Being able to walk into a movie theater by July 2020 seems like a pipe dream.

The good news is that if you still need your fill of superhero stories, and don’t mind reading instead of watching, the company has made some of its most popular comic book story arcs free to download for the next few weeks. In order to read them, you can either download the Marvel Unlimited app from the App Store (if you’re on iOS) or Google Play (if you’re an Android user) or simply click the links below and read them in your browser.

SpaceX Starship prototype explodes during pressure testing

%name SpaceX Starship prototype explodes during pressure testing by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • SpaceX Starship prototype SN3 was destroyed during a pressure test early this morning, producing a massive cloud of steam before the vehicle crumpled and collapsed.
  • This is now the second time a Starship prototype has endured such a failure during pressure testing, with a similar incident occurring back in November 2019.
  • Elon Musk notes that a test configuration mistake may ultimately be to blame for this morning’s failure, though a full investigation will be launched to determine the cause.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

One of SpaceX’s shiny Starship prototypes suffered a complete meltdown early this morning during a pressure test. The result was what appeared to be the total destruction of the Starship SN3 prototype as it completely collapsed into a crumpled pile of twisted metal. The event, which was captured by observers, is kind of neat to watch, but it obviously isn’t what SpaceX had in mind.

The exact cause of the prototype failure will have to be investigated by SpaceX, but shortly after the machine blew its top, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter to offer his own predictions for what may have gone wrong.

The FDA just approved a key coronavirus test

%name The FDA just approved a key coronavirus test by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The FDA just approved a brand new test for the novel coronavirus which could speed up the return to normal life.
  • The test looks for antibodies in the bloodstream of a COVID-19 survivor, which could prove that person is immune to the virus and could avoid social distancing restrictions.
  • However, the science is still uncertain, and it’s not clear how long COVID-19 immunity will last without a vaccine.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Staying indoors is the only thing that can reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus. The longer we avoid others, the less likely we are to get COVID-19. We already know the virus is highly contagious, with research showing that presymptomatic patients can also transmit the infection. Not to mention there may be some rare cases out there where the pathogen remains highly active for several weeks — the current record is at 49 days.

As we stay inside, we’re also helping physicians and first responders. Some countries have been overwhelmed by the number of patients they’ve had to treat in a short period of time, and various communities will continue to experience this harsh reality for a while longer. But life will return to “normal” eventually. Even then, we’ll run the risk of more outbreaks. Eradicating the virus is only possible with a targeted cure, like a vaccine. Before that, we’ll need a different COVID-19 test than the one being offered today. And the FDA just approved the first such test.

The desperate struggle at one NYC hospital on the front lines of the coronavirus fight

%name The desperate struggle at one NYC hospital on the front lines of the coronavirus fight by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • According to the latest coronavirus numbers from Johns Hopkins University, more than 1,500 people have died so far from the virus in New York City, which has also seen more than 45,000 residents test positive.
  • New York City has become the epicenter of the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak in the US, and one reporter recently got a tour of a hospital on the front lines of this fight — Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The eerie reality that you’d probably notice the quickest if there was any way for you to visit the Intensive Care Unit at Brooklyn’s Maimonides Medical Center right now is the presence of IV drop bags out in the hallway. Nurses have to adjust those bags, which deliver drugs and fluids to the suffering coronavirus patients, but that would require proximity to the patients themselves — and so, thanks to long tubes that snake underneath closed doors, the bags stand out in the hallway.

The hospital — where workers were recently filmed moving bodies wrapped on gurneys into position to be loaded onto a trailer — gave a tour of its coronavirus preparations in recent days to a New York Post reporter. The tour was meant to illustrate the preparations being made there, where 26 coronavirus patients were packed into the ICU on one particular day when the normal number is half that much. Most of the patients were sedated and relying on ventilators to keep their lungs going, while the reporter noted one man who appeared to be in his 30s who had an oxygen mask strapped to his face, with the only sound around him the low hiss of the oxygen tank.

Amazon delays Prime Day event because of the coronavirus

%name Amazon delays Prime Day event because of the coronavirus by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Amazon will reportedly delay its annual Prime Day event because of the coronavirus.
  • The two-day sales event typically takes place in July and will be pushed back to August at the absolute earliest.
  • Amazon will reportedly take a huge financial hit as a result.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Reuters is reporting that Amazon is delaying its annual Prime Day shopping event because of the coronavirus. As it stands now, Amazon is planning to hold its 48-hour shopping bonanza in August at the earliest. The date, however, is not set in stone and it’s entirely possible that it may be delayed even further pending the economic fallout from the coronavirus.

Delaying Prime Day is a pretty significant move for Amazon. The two-day shopping event typically takes the U.S. by storm and offers up truly tremendous deals to Prime subscribers. Last year, Amazon boasted that Prime Day 2019 was the “largest shopping event in Amazon history.”

New iPad Pro security feature cuts the mic when you close the case

%name New iPad Pro security feature cuts the mic when you close the case by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Apple introduced a new security feature on the 2020 iPad Pro that disconnects the microphone at a hardware level when an MFi case compliant case is attached and closed.
  • This iPad Pro feature keeps microphone data from being collected by any software on the tablet.
  • The hardware disconnect was first introduced on MacBook models in 2018.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Two weeks ago, Apple revealed a brand new iPad Pro model via a press release on its website. The iPad’s unveiling likely would have been part of Apple’s spring event, had it happened, but the coronavirus pandemic made sure to put a stop to that. All in all, the 2020 iPad Pro isn’t a massive departure from its predecessor — internally, everything has been upgraded, but the design is mostly the same, save for refreshed camera array on the back.

But it turns out that not every feature of the new iPad was disclosed in the original press release. This week, 9to5Mac spotted an update to the Apple Platform Security guide which reveals that new iPads, including the latest model, have a hardware feature that ensures the microphone disconnects when the case is closed.
