Researchers finally explained the weirdest coronavirus symptom

  • The loss of smell may be an early warning of a novel coronavirus infection, recent reports have shown.
  • Harvard researchers studied the genetics of the olfactory cells involved in the process of smelling and found a surprising explanation for COVID-19-related anosmia.
  • The new virus might interact with a certain type of cell inside the olfactory epithelium, not the actual neurons involved in processing smell.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Novel coronavirus infections have a few particularities that make them highly dangerous. The virus is extremely resilient and can survive for days on certain surfaces, which increases the risk of infection. The incubation period is relatively long, meaning you might not experience symptoms for as long as 2 weeks after contracting it. Finally, most common COVID-19 symptoms aren’t unique to this disease, so only a test will tell you for sure that you’ve got it as opposed to a cold or the flu.

However, doctors discovered two early warning signs that may point to coronavirus infection. These are anosmia and dysgeusia, or the loss of smell and taste. While not all COVID-19 patients might display these early signs, some of them experienced unusual changes in smell and taste, raising awareness among doctors. Researchers at Harvard looked for a scientific explanation as to what may happen inside the nose to lead to an early loss of smell with COVID-19, and they were able to explain the symptom.

Amazon slashed McAfee antivirus to just $16.99, today only

%name Amazon slashed McAfee antivirus to just $16.99, today only by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Everyone is focused on the novel coronavirus outbreak, which continues to spread across the United States and around the world.
  • Another kind of virus is becoming more prevalent as well now that so many people were caught off guard and now need to work from home.
  • We’re of course talking about computer viruses, and Amazon is running a fantastic one-day sale on Wednesday that slashes the price of McAfee Total Protection from $80 to just $16.99.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

It will be months if not a year before we can fully assess the impact of the novel coronavirus pandemic. In the near term though, the devastating virus has already completely upended our way of life. People across the country are being asked to self-quarantine and practice social distancing in order to slow the spread of the potentially deadly COVID-19 virus.

In hot zones like New York, New Jersey, and California, local governments are doing more than just asking. All people other than essential workers like healthcare professionals and people who work in the food industry are on lockdown. That means working from home or taking classes from home for many people, which they’re not used to doing. For hackers, that means a giant wave of new people to target with computer viruses and other malware.

If you find yourself ill-prepared to deal with the increasing threat from viruses as you work from home, Amazon is running a fantastic deal on Wednesday on a one-stop-shop solution that will protect your computer from viruses and provide internet security while you browse. McAfee Total Protection Antivirus and Internet Security is among the most popular options out there when it comes to protecting not just Windows PCs and Mac computers, but also mobile devices. Today, for one day only, you can get a full year of protection on up to three devices for just $16.99. McAfee antivirus software is already a great value at its normal price of $80 a year, so this is definitely a terrific deal.

McAfee Total Protection, 3 Device, Antivirus Software, Internet Security, 1 Year Subscription -…: $16.99

Here are the key details from Amazon’s product page:

  • AWARD-WINNING ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE: Combats malware, hackers, would-be-fraudsters and more to protect your privacy, identity and, of course, your devices
  • SECURE BROWSING: Sidestep attacks before they happen with clear warnings of risky websites, links, and files
  • PASSWORD MANAGER: Enjoy secure and convenient access to all your logins with a browser-based password manager that generates and memorizes secure passwords for you
  • INSTANT CODE DOWNLOAD: Digital code that will be emailed to you after purchase. Go to McAfee.com/activate once you receive the email and enter the 25-digit activation code

Today’s the day: T-Mobile and Sprint finally unite, CEO John Legere steps down

%name Today’s the day: T Mobile and Sprint finally unite, CEO John Legere steps down by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The long-planned merger between wireless rivals T-Mobile and Sprint finally became official on Wednesday.
  • As part of the merger, T-Mobile’s CEO John Legere is leaving his post a little early, though he will remain a board member of the combined company through this summer.
  • The merger produces a stronger No. 3 wireless industry player that’s poised to give AT&T and Verizon more of a run for their money.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

One of the biggest and longest-running stories in the mobile industry finally comes to something of a close today. T-Mobile announced on Wednesday the completion, at last, of its merger with Sprint that creates a combined wireless carrier with more than 100 million customers in a deal valued at more than $31 billion.

The merger creates a new and resurgent No. 3 player behind AT&T and Verizon and has also spurred T-Mobile’s brash, bombastic CEO John Legere — who’s had the job since 2012 — to step down early and hand the reins over to T-Mobile’s former COO Mike Sievert, though Legere will stay on as a board member through the company’s annual shareholders meeting in June.

Zoom is leaking thousands of email addresses and photos to strangers

%name Zoom is leaking thousands of email addresses and photos to strangers by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Zoom has become the video conferencing service of choice for hundreds of thousands of people since the coronavirus pandemic forced employees all over the world to work from home.
  • Zoom offers high-quality video and many useful features, but the number of privacy concerns surrounding the app have continued to mount.
  • In a new report, Motherboard reveals that Zoom is leaking private information of thousands of users to strangers, and giving those strangers the ability to call other users they don’t know.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Few services have been bigger beneficiaries of the coronavirus pandemic than Zoom. As millions of workers from all over the world were suddenly forced to work from home, and friends and family had to cancel their plans to meet up, video conferencing became the tool of choice for long-distance communication.

Of the countless video conferencing services available on mobile and desktop, few could match Zoom when it came to the quality of the calls and the number of features the service offered. But we are now learning that there is a price to pay (beyond the monthly subscription fee) for using Zoom.

Coronavirus might be able to travel up to 27 feet in the air

%name Coronavirus might be able to travel up to 27 feet in the air by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Coronavirus can travel up to 27 feet through the air, an MIT researcher warns, basing her new research paper on more up-to-date models of how droplets and particles move through the air.
  • Current social distancing measures may not be adequate, as staying six feet away from a sick person may not be enough to protect you from a cough or sneeze.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The coronavirus pandemic has forced us to change our lives in many ways. Lots of people are working from home these days, and social distancing mandates mean that even when we go out in public we should be doing our best to stay at least six feet away from one another. But where did that measurement come from, and why is it considered accurate?

A new research paper by MIT associate professor Lydia Bourouiba suggests that the current social distancing mandate is based on an outdated model of how respiratory diseases spread. The true range of a pathogen such as the novel coronavirus is closer to 30 feet than six.

The 5 best Apple deals on Amazon right now

%name The 5 best Apple deals on Amazon right now by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Amazon has adopted a temporary new policy in light of the novel coronavirus outbreak that is devastating the US right now.
  • The nation’s top online retailer has said it is moving away from shipping nonessential products until later this month, but there are still great deals to be found on “nonessential” items that are shipping out immediately.
  • Among them, several discounts on popular Apple devices shine brightest, including price cuts on AirPods 2 and Apple’s latest iPad models.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The novel coronavirus is obviously at the top of everyone’s minds right now, and that’s as true of executives at big companies as it is of the rest of us. That is perhaps why Amazon decided to temporarily shift warehouse space and shipping resources away from nonessential products in order to free up capacity for essentials. Of course, those of use in quarantine still have a need for items deemed nonessential, so there are still some nonessential products that are shipping out immediately.

Apple devices and accessories are obviously among the most popular in the world, and so many of them are still shipping. What’s more, there are actually some terrific deals to be found despite everything that’s going on. Here, we’ve rounded up the five best Apple deals out there right now so you can stock up and save.

AirPods 2

Everyone knows that AirPods are the most popular wireless earbuds out there, but they’re also quite pricey. If you head over to Amazon, however, you’ll find AirPods 2 on sale with a $20 discount and AirPods 2 with Wireless Charging Case are on sale with a $30 discount. Self-quarantine will go much smoother with great music playing through great earbuds.

Apple AirPods with Charging Case: $139.00

Apple AirPods with Wireless Charging Case: $169.00

AirPods Pro

We debated whether or not to include this one since Apple’s AirPods Pro aren’t on sale right now, but they’re the most popular AirPods version we cover even when they’re full price. They’re in stock on Amazon and shipping right now, which isn’t very common so don’t miss this opposrtunity.

Apple AirPods Pro: $249.00

iPads

There are a bunch of great deals on Amazon right now on iPads, and they’re shipping right away. Trust us, a tablet is an awesome thing to have in quarantine and it’s so much better than streaming stuff to a tiny smartphone screen. 10.2-inch iPads start at just $279 instead of $329 on Amazon right now, and tons of iPad Pro models are discounted as well.

New Apple iPad (10.2-Inch, Wi-Fi, 32GB) – Space Gray (Latest Model): $279.00

Apple iPad Pro (11-inch, Wi-Fi, 64GB) – Space Gray (1st Generation): $699.99

New Apple iPad Pro (12.9-inch, Wi-Fi, 128GB) – Space Gray (4th Generation): $947.14

MacBook Air

Need a new laptop? Want an Apple machine but don’t want to pay top dollar? The previous-generation MacBook Air is on sale right now for just $749.99, which is a big discount compared to the normal price of $1,000.

Apple MacBook Air (13-inch, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD Storage) – Silver: $749.99

Accessories

Last but certainly not least, definitely hit Amazon’s Apple accessories page for tons of surprisingly good discounts on popular accessories. Cables, iPhone cases, and more are on sale right now, but some popular items are starting to sell out.

Crazy wireless camera that lets your phone see anywhere is down to its lowest price

  • Most nonessential items on Amazon have big shipping delays at this point, but there are still some great deals to be found on products shipping out right away — if you know where to look.
  • One deal in particular drops one of the best-selling smartphone accessories we’ve ever covered, the Depstech WF010 Wireless Borescope Snake Camera, back down to its lowest price ever.
  • It connects to your phone wirelessly to let your smartphone see just about anywhere, and the new upgraded model is on sale at an all-time low as well.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The Depstech WF010 Wireless Borescope Snake Camera is the sort of thing that you’ve probably never heard of before. Once you get one though and you see how incredibly useful it can be in so many different situations, you won’t be able to imagine ever being without one again.

In a nutshell, this little gadget has three main components. First, there’s a small box that houses a battery and circuitry, as well as a Wi-Fi radio. Next comes the 11.5-foot-long “snake” part of the device, which is a semi-rigid tube that can be extended and shaped however you want. Finally, there’s a camera on the end of the tube that captures live video as you snake the device into anything and everything you want.

DEPSTECH Wireless Endoscope, IP67 Waterproof WiFi Borescope Inspection 2.0 Megapixels HD Snake…: $28.79 (use code GSD8NBF2 by 4/5)

There are so many great uses for this device that it’s difficult to know where to begin, so let’s first cover exactly what it does. The WF010 connects wirelessly to your iPhone, iPad, or Android device and turns it into a remote viewfinder and controller. You can see exactly what the camera sees as you snake it into something, and you can also use the phone to record video or capture still photos.

Here’s a quick blurb from a 5-star review on Amazon that explains one of the countless use cases for it:

I had a water leak in my wall. I didn’t know where it was and the Endoscope enabled me to find it by drilling 1/2 inch holes in the wall. I was amazed when I found the water pipe with the hole in it (see image). Hiring a plumber could have cost me over $500, but I was able to isolate the problem and fix the leak for less than $100 (including the cost of the scope).

It’s waterproof, by the way, so that reviewer didn’t have to worry about getting the borescope wet. Here’s another Amazon review:

Worked perfectly to help me get a gas can protector cap out of my tractor gas tank. Handled a half hour deep in diesel gas, no problems!

That second one is of particular interest because it touches upon something else you can do with this Depstech borescope. It comes with a few attachments that clip to the end and add all sorts of functionality. Once cool one is a mirror that lets you see around corners as you work the camera into a tight space. Then there’s a hook attachment that lets you fish things like keys and jewelry out of places you might otherwise never reach. That’s the attachment the reviewer above used to retrieve the cap from his gas can.

There’s a reason the Depstech WF010 Wireless Borescope Snake Camera is one of the most popular smartphone accessories we’ve ever covered: it’s awesome. It’s also on sale right now at its lowest price of the year right now if you clip the 5% coupon on the Amazon page and use the promo code GSD8NBF2 at checkout — just $28.79. Definitely pick one up while it’s on sale at a deep discount and email us to let us know how you used it. Maybe we’ll feature your story next time it goes on sale!

DEPSTECH Wireless Endoscope, IP67 Waterproof WiFi Borescope Inspection 2.0 Megapixels HD Snake…: $28.79 (use code GSD8NBF2 by 4/5)

There’s another, newer model available as well called the Depstech WF060 Wireless Borescope Camera, and it offers a few big advantages over the WF010. First, it’s got a much higher-resolution camera that packs 5 megapixels instead of 2 megapixels. Second, it supports zoom that you can control right from within the app. And third, it’s longer at 16.5 feet instead of 11.5, so it can be fed even deeper into tight spaces. Use the promo code EFJCW8W8 between now and April 5th and you can snag one for just $49.49 instead of $66.
